RTX 3080 or RX 6900 XT for VR with HP reverb G2
Svsmokey replied to Bombtastic's topic in Virtual Reality
Good to hear , as my RiftS will die at the end of the year , and both replacements i'm considering require motion smoothing . I'm really happy with my 6800xt . -
RTX 3080 or RX 6900 XT for VR with HP reverb G2

I've been reading of problems with AMD 6000 series and motion smoothing . Has this been fixed with the latest driver update ? -
Not what i was hoping for...stand-alone headset with the focus on enterprise . We'll see when more specs are released ... My RiftS will be dead to me the end of this year , and no good replacement in sight . WMR does not appeal , and the Index needs more res .

Thing is the F5 is so limited in both roles . AG role is essentially the same as WW2 tech , making it very difficult to actually place bombs on target . AA mode is guns and sidewinders only (integrally) , making it a sitting duck for any bvr-equipped aircraft . Yes the Hornet is a systems-heavy aircraft , but those systems are intuitive and semi-automated , and make things much easier for the pilot , not harder . Further , not all the available weapons / screens have to be learned at once . A new pilot can bomb effectively on his first mission . There is no comparing the accuracy of CCIP vs angle-rate bombing , for example , and the FBW makes the aircraft much easier to fly for a newbie than a stick-and-rudder aircraft like the F5 . A Newb would appreciate the rugged gear of the Hornet as well . In short , the F5 requires far greater pilot skills to fly and fight , while being far less effective , and with a much more limited mission set .

Looking forward to Don's review as well . I am reconsidering the Index as the time nears for facebook to kill my RiftS .

You might wish to try turning of hyperthreading in your mb bios . This will lower cpu temps , allowing more headroom and potentially give you a few extra frames .
-
Task manager sampling rate is MUCH slower than cpu core changing rate , which it does to keep temps in check .

Just lost a YouTube couple whose only video I saw was their discussing selling their Pietenpol to get a 140 . The very next video i saw was Blancolirio discussing their fatal crash in the 140 due to stall/spin at a very high density altitude near Williams , Az . Very sad , and yes real flight is very unforgiving of the smallest mistake .

The only observation i can make is that DCS runs mostly on 1 core at this time , with audio running on another . So Task Manager will show low utilisation , even when that 1 core is maxed out . To decrease the load on that core , i would try lowering the forest visibility to ~ 70-80 % . I have mine set to 70 , and find that just adequate to avoid tree "popup" . This will also decrease the tree shadows computation by 20-30% , and gain you a few frames . You might wish to consider flat shadows as well . If you use TrackIr , shoot for 60 and lock that framerate .

F-18 Deadstick Landing Without Losing FCS possible?
Svsmokey replied to CommandT's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
No hydraulic or electrical on Hornet APU . There is a "mech" control that provides a limited travel to the stabs only , but you'd have to really be desperate (like you don't want to parachute into an episode of Real Housewives) , Best thing to do if you can't restart is to punch out . Aim the aircraft where they're filming Real Housewives first . Don't know if "mech" is modeled in DCS . -
I use it during the daytime in VR . Since 2.7 , the knobs have no visible backlighting effect . I haven't tried it at night yet . Clean installation with only VA and Oculus running . Deleting fxo/metashaders , DCS repair no help

I had super-smooth performance in 2.7 until i allowed a Windows update today . HUGE mistake . Stuttering like a kinetoscope , blurry , controllers going berserk , had to redo usb power settings , pc power , game mode off , game bar off , recalibration etc , etc . Thought for a while i'd have to do a total wipe .Took me quite some time to get back to 95% of what i had .

My wife supports my DCS-VR addiction , as I do her sewing and quilting . I find it a little disappointing , however , that she has never expressed an interest in trying it out for herself . Maybe i should count my blessings , as if she did , she might take over my simpit , as she once did my motorbike .

DCS Short Cut No Longer Works for Non-VR Operation
Svsmokey replied to Bingo41's topic in Virtual Reality
I use Skatezilla's GUI utility for that and other purposes . But it simply creates a button that executes the same command , and still works in 2.7 , leading me to think that either your command line is corrupted , or your file path has changed . Try this one dcs.exe --force_disable_VR -
Small ddr3 memory upgrade 16gb to 32gb question
Svsmokey replied to erick's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
If you elect to buy matching memory , be sure and use the exact same part # . Personally , i would spend the money on an ssd , if you don't have one , and put your pagefile on it . -
It is very subtle for me , finally picked up in the far distance in the mountains , this after 8-9 flights in 2.7 . Thanks for the tip re: gamma . Have to give that a try .
-
Funny thing , had a solo but complex flight today , and the mfd's were sharper than ever , despite being fuzzier immediately after the update . Go figure !
-
Yes , that's why i require 4xmsaa and pd 1.4 . I quoted those numbers to infer just how powerful the 6800xt is .
-
FWIW , with a RiftS and a 6800xt , i'm running msaax4 (and pd 1.4) with excellent performance , and-at least in the air-the shimmering/flickering/aliasing is gone . Still get it on the airfields tho .
-
First time i have had a chance to use lightening and mav displays and see new explosion/fire/smoke effects in 2.7 , followed by some terrain play in the gorges and cloud surfing between layers , all with butter-smooth performance , even running msaax4 and pd 1.4 . Enjoyed the smooth transitions from clear air to cloud when climbing/descending too . Yeah , that was an amazing experience - even greased the landing ☺ This update deserves first place in the ED hall of fame !
-
Sure worried about that cable life , tho...take a good look where the cable pluga into the grip , and imagine what happens when you cycle the throttle back and forth... It is most evident with the hornet grips (afaik the only one available now) viewed from the front .

Quest 2 or rift s with 2700x and gtx1080. Is the quest 2 feasible?

Are you aware that ED is working on a Vulkan update (currently) due Q3 this year ?

Communication Menu Written List?

Umm...have you looked at Vaicom Pro ? It is a DCS plug-in for VoiceAttack , costs next to nothing , and will save you hundreds of hours trying to duplicate its functionality . -

Yeah , the mfd/ddi res took a hit in 2.7 . I had no problem in 2.5 . Hopefully they'll fix it . You can gain some sharpness by use of pd in DCS vr settings , but don't expect the same res in vr , particularly at distances of ~ 20 meters or greater . In-cockpit , the best systems can only approximate 1080p . The tradeoffs are 3d vision and the corresponding sense of depth (and altitude) , and a much-improved situational awareness . And critically , the infinitely-greater sense of immersion from being IN that cockpit , and IN that world .
