Which are the best modules so far ?

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen a thread that polls the members of this forum on what their favorite module(s) is/are and why. So I thought I will do it because I am interested in other peoples views :-)

Anyway, mine are the Mig15 and F86 Saber. Why? Simple, they are very well designed software wise and I am mostly interested in vintage aviation.

Anyone else want to say what their favorites are ?

# UH-1H Huey

  • Fantastic high-fidelity FM
  • Real challenge to fly (still have not got it yet), yet ...
  • totally captures the "feeling" and the joy of flight
  • such an iconic aircraft
  • great mission profile: from just-get-in-there-and-blow-things-up to troop/cargo transport
  • it's a helicopter!

# P-51D

  • Again, the "feeling" of flight is amazing with this one

# A-10C

  • Systems management/employment is a great challenge and interest
  • Not as fun for the actual "flying" (though not because of any lack in the FM dept; just that's how it is with a modern jet)

Some day, I hope I will be able to add the AH-64D to this list ....

Well, the answer require having all of the modules I guess, which is I don't.

I have all except the C-101 and Hawk. Below are my favorites:

1) Ka-50: I'm a big fan of attack choppers and you have to admit, the Ka-50 is pretty damned cool by any standard. It also has loads of content, fits perfectly into DCS as a whole and has solid flight and systems modeling.

2) MiG-21: Good flight and systems modeling, but what really makes it is just how much fun it is to fly. Content is a bit weak for it, but I mostly play MP or build my own missions anyways, so that isn't a major issue.

I don't have a third favorite. I fly the UH-1, Mi-8, L-39ZA and Mirage 2000 somewhat regularly, but I wouldn't call myself much of a fan of any of them. They fill roles, but are little more than placeholders for more interesting aircraft to me.

I have nearly all modules including Hawk & C101. My favorite is the Mig 21. This is the plane that turned me into a flight sim addict (as my wife calls me now ). The moment I get into the cockpit, I'm immersed. I still get a good feeling when I successfully touch down after a sortie or just a navigation flight. It's a great combination of challenging and fun.

Why? 'Cuz I like choppers and Eastern Bloc machines in general :)

The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.

I own most of all of them, but the ones I consistently fly the most:

- Huey UH-1 (with the user mods, this is flat out the most fun)

- 109 K-4 (ditto with adding user mods)

- F-86 (same here, 3rd party user mods complete the DCS birds)

MSI MAG Z790 Carbon, i9-13900k, NH-D15 cooler, 64 GB CL40 6000mhz RAM, MSI RTX4090, Yamaha 5.1 A/V Receiver, 4x 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe, 1x 2TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD, Win 11 Pro, TM Warthog, Virpil WarBRD, MFG Crosswinds, 43" Samsung 4K TV, 21.5 Acer VT touchscreen, TrackIR, Varjo Aero, Wheel Stand Pro Super Warthog, Phanteks Enthoo Pro2 Full Tower Case, Seasonic GX-1200 ATX3 PSU, PointCTRL, Buttkicker 2, K-51 Helicopter Collective Control

currently:

Huey - just incredibly fun to fly

F-86 - which was a surprise for me, as it is "not my era". But it is also just tons of fun to fly

Mi-8 - because so many switches and knobs ... and swirly stuff that moves in every direction. at once. (note: me = rotorhead ;o)

Mig-21 - love the detail (so many knobs and switches!!). Was initially a bit reluctant (not really my era, and yeah, and tbh, I am more into western aircraft ... but meh ... it is so much fun to fly ... :o)

Good chance to become favs:

M2000C - more likely my era. and it can kill stuff on the ground! And Razbam rocks!

and I have a strong feeling that the Gazelle and BO-105 will quickly make me cut some time off my Huey schedule soon!

All time favs:

A-10C - no explanation necessary, right?

Ka-50 - see above

Not really my day to day aircraft, but take them for a spin once in a while regardless:

WWII stuff (right, because that era thing)

Trainers - tbh, more likely only the L-39 right now ... so I can kill stuff on the ground.

Well I have all but the MiG-15 and L-39.

A-10C is obviously one of the best modules, but doesn't make it to "my list". I enjoy when I fly it but, never really feel the drive to get back to it, not my thing I guess.

My list :

- MiG-21Bis, probably the most enjoyment I got out of DCS and still my preferred module overall. I would give it flying colors, but I have to be honest, I do get episodes of disillusionment every now and then with multiple pretty big flight model changes, and "fixing one thing breaks another"s in it's history. Still, work is ever ongoing with it, and flying it around, doing silly aerobatics like flying between city blocks, under the birdges, trying to get most out of it's maneuvrability / flight performance, wtihout getting into it's nasty area, trying to fight much superior foes, coming up with ground attack tactics etc, I just love it. Besides, it is my era really :).

- F-86F another one I enjoya lot. Also finicky but fun and rewarding to fly, though not as much as the MiG. Fun to do ground attacks in it against even somewhat heavy AAA (unless there are missiles of course...).

- P-51D, although I haven't flown it much in a long long while, this is one of the modules I have enjoyed most during the time I used it frequently. That is extra surprising since, before that module, I was almost (but not quite) a Mustang hater :P. Still the best attack platform among WW II modules, also more fun to fly than Fw in my opinion.

- Bf-109K4 well 109 has been one of my favorite planes ever since I saw a picture of it in an encyclopedia when I was not even an elementary school toddler. So I couldn't pass it, and likely I'll buy every other 109 version in DCS too. That said, I find myself flying it infrequently in DCS. Partially because of visibility issues in DCS dogfights, and partially because WW II modules tend to need good performing sticks and my joystick is getting really out of it's element lately. Still, when I fly it, 109 is highly enjoyable, even if I absolutely suck at takeoffs and landings with it still :p.

So I guess my favorites are these. I enjoy other modules I have too, apart from C-101 and Hawk still gathering dust. Those might have been rated in above list if they were in a state I find enjoyable, but alas I don't find them to be there yet. At least Hawk is apparently getting there slowly though. I remain hopeful both will get there.

Helicopters are all very nice but, but I guess I am more into fixed wing aircraft. Funnily, when I do fly helos, I find Mi-8 and UH-1 to be considerably more enjoyable than Ka-50, which is something even I have been surprised at myself.

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V

Really interesting reading insights into other players why they like their particular module(s). Looks like the Mig 21 is a big hit with people !! Too complicated for me though.

I only have 3 modules though from the sounds of it I made some pretty astute choices! I have:

Ka-50

A10C (own a warthog and thats why I bought DCS in the 1st place)

Mig 21

Havent enough experience with the Mig or the Ka-50 just yet but after a few days getting to know the systems on the Ka-50 I think I am defo a helicopter man!

Cant really put it into words I just love the feeling of flight on the chopper, but also the computer and targeting systems on the black shark are very cool (wordsmith) and I found the start up proceedure for some reason alot easier to learn than with the A10C.

I just love everything about the Ka-50 so far.

People who dont sim dont realize the feeling of power these modern weapon systems can bring to ones fingertips!

Who needs science fiction you're a flying terminator and the complexity and satisfaction of learning only serves to increase the feeling of accomplishment and delusive omnipotence!

A10C is an awesome experience and I'm gonna get better on the Mig21 after reading how popular it is, as although I can fly it I never really got to grips with the weapons systems on the Mig though the tutorial wasnt all that great either.

Pretty much all aircraft in DCS are awesome. This is the sim that brought me back into flightsims after a decade of Battlefield etc. So basically, just pick the coolest aircraft and go with that. Then maybe pick another almost as cool aircraft and discover that it's actually way cooler than your initial pick. And go from there...there's no return :)

My current favorites are the:

Mig 21bis

Fw190D

Bf109

P51 mustang

Ka50

Mi8

Huey

F15C

A10C

A10A

Mig 29, A, G, etc.

Su27

Su25

Su33

F-86 sabre

Which one of these is a bad plane.

In January I hated the Ka50

In February I hated the BF109

In March I hated the Mig21bis

In April I currently dislike the f-86 sabre.

I expect in May I will dislike the Mustang or probably that spec of dust on the monitor.

I'm currently flying the BF109 the most offline while using the a10c in ground pounding online.

I vote Turnip. That's probably not a good plane.

I'm getting far too philosophical. It's just a game. Play what you want for Turnips sake.

My favorite changes as time goes by.

The one I return to again and again is the A10-C. It is the first fixed wing aircraft in the DCS series and is great fun in that it is so varied in the roles it can play. Kinda like your first love: always will be a place for her in my heart.

Over the last year or so, I now have a 'thing' for roto-winged critters. The Ka-50, Huey and Mi-8 are great. Having spent my entire aviation hobby in fixed wing aircraft I initially found helos obtuse and impossible to fly.

However, with some study and video watching, followed by some practice, I'm able to make helo flying happen.

Ka-50: Very cool, Russian and it can bring the pain.

Huey: Vietnam. Super flight model.

Mi-8: As heavy an airframe as is presently available in DCS. (may not have the highest MGW, but flies heavyish) My roots are in heavy airframes.

I really enjoy all the modules, but these are my favorites at present.

I've been snatching them up as they've been released, so I have them all (for now). I can't really narrow it down much closer than 3 groups. Inside the groups, there's no particular order.

Fly every day:

If DCS is opened for more than 10 minutes, you can pretty much guarantee that I'll fly each of these at least once.

- A-10C -- I love the depth to this one. All the systems, procedures, handling, etc. With enough practice it's a straight up killing machine, and deploying it effectively is rewarding.

- Huey -- Awesome flight model, and it's another challenging/rewarding to fly type of aircraft. The only thing I don't like is that sometimes it feels incomplete. For example, you can fly around with the EGT and torque pinned all day without consequence.

- P-51/TF-51 -- I just love flying around, buzzing villages, doing pattern work, etc. It has a great flight model and it feels like you're flying a real plane in real air, none of that on-rails nonsense.

Binge aircraft

I don't necessarily fly these every day, but when I get the bug, I'll fly one of them for a week straight.

- Ka-50 -- Another in-depth killing machine. It's fun to peak out over a hilltop, snipe targets, and dodge TOW missiles. I'll spend a week doing a campaign with it, but then not touch it for a month.

- M-2000C -- This one is still in development, so sometimes a bug will get in the way and I'll give up, but I really like what I've seen so far. It's an amazing close in knife-fighter, turns on a dime.

- MiG-21 -- I forget how to fly this plane so quickly that it's hard to stay proficient. When I do get back into it's a lot of fun, a very in-depth model.

Fly occasionally

I don't dislike any of these, but I don't often get captivated by them. I'll just fly random missions here and there, or mess around on a free flight server.

- MiG-15 and F-86 -- I'd say the same thing for both. A lot of fun to just fly around, or to do a bunch of dogfight missions. I do prefer the MiG-15 a little bit more though, that cannon is just brutal.

- Fw-190 and Bf 109 -- I also think of these similarly. For combat I fly them both along with the P-51 about evenly. I just use the P-51 more for free flight.

- F-15/Su-25T/Su-27 -- They're both fun and I'll do occasional missions, but I never really get into them a whole lot.

- L-39 -- I fly it every now and again, but haven't learned it from top to bottom. It seems well modeled and it has the potential to uproot the TF-51 as my freeflight plane of choice, if I ever spend enough time learning it.

- Mi-8 -- It's like a flying school bus. With guns and rockets. I mess around with it from time to time, but the Huey usually gets picked instead.

Pretty much never fly

These *might* get flown once a month.

- C-101 -- There's nothing particularly bad about this plane, I just haven't found it to be all that satisfying. Whatever kind of flying I want to do, another one just does it better.

- Hawk -- I really don't like the SFM. Things might change once it's flight model is good, but I kind of have the feeling it's going to end up in the same boat as the C-101.

- Su-33/MiG-29 -- I don't even know if these are still SFM. That's what's been keeping me away. I haven't flown them in forever, I'm 99% sure I don't even have controls mapped for them.

- A-10A/Su-25 -- With the A-10C and Su-25T, I've got no use for these guys.

The ones I use most are the Mig-21, A-10C, KA-50, and the m2000c...

every once in a while i fly the a10a/su25/su25t

making the game more difficult because sometimes it's fun to do difficult things.

but yeah, subjectively they are all equally good and bad...depending on who you talk to...

that being said, the Mig-21 is very rewarding, just the right era plane that you can kill more modern fighters with it, but it still that... not flying a computer with wings... feel to it.

I have written this around back when the MiG was released : http://whmilsimflyer.blogspot.com.tr/2014/10/dcs-mig-21bis-by-leatherneck.html

It is a look at air to ground weaponry on it, and how they may be used generally. Some of the info may got outdated between the plethora of updates since then but overall it may still be of use :). Hopefuly, it will be of use to somebody :). Also, forum user Holbeach have some great youtube videos on bombing with various aircraft, most prominently MiG itself, his videos include pop up, level, toss and "over the shoulder loft" bombing methods among others.

Oh and I forgot mentioning Su-25A in my post earlier in this thread, while I don't fly it as often as DCS aircraft, pretty rarely these days to be honest, it is probably my favorit FC3 aircraft. I really enjoy it more than Su-25T.

The MiG-21 looks complicated, but its not. The navigation systems are easy to learn and the radar is very simplistic. Learning the systems takes less time than learning to really fly the airplane.

The MiG-21Bis is also my favorite, followed by the MiG-15Bis, Mi-8, BF109K-4, and Mirage 2000C. I also fly the F-86F, UH-1H, and FW 190D-9 pretty regularly.

Overall, I find the MiG-21 to be the most rewarding, mostly because of its personality and the way it flies.

If you are a fan of the MiG-15, you would probably really enjoy the MiG-21. I think that you can feel the heritage (if that's possible in a Sim), but the MiG-21 is much higher performance and trickier to take-off/land...but that's the fun part!
