cichlidfan Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Don't be a hater :smilewink: No offense intended. That is just one of the reasons that I don't buy reference cards. It is rather like the cooler that Intel ships with their chips. The last time I used a stock CPU cooler was around 1997 when I bought a Celeron 300A, which I did manage to run for several years at 450MHz. :) ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! wolle Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 This will be the first time ever I am going to upgrade a graphics card, so forgive my silly question: I was expecting that the prizes for the 980 Ti will drop very significantly once the new 1000 series is out, but I checked on Newegg the 980 Ti card is over $700, more than the 1070 and 1080 cards. The 980 Ti is a super high end model in the 9-series, and is therefore in a high price bracket. The 1070 should be a similar price to the 970, the 1080/980 etc. When a 1080 Ti is released, it will also be up around $700. So all that considered, this is why you don't buy a 980 Ti at this priec when the 1070/80 is about to be released. Prices may drop as the 10-series becomes more accessible. cichlidfan Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 Prices may drop as the 10-series becomes more accessible. This is the root of the issue. Technically, the 1070/80 have been released but until availability is better I would not expect to see a price drop the the 900 series, with the 980ti still being at or near 10 series prices for a while. SkateZilla Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 (edited) Polaris RX480 will be availible June 29th, for $199. Just sayin, also 2 RX480s beat the 1080, while only using 51% utilization. Now I've just read that the GTX 1070 bests all 900 series cards, including the 980 Ti, and it sells for under $400. So, unless the 980 Ti soon becomes dirt cheap (around $200), is there any reason for not buying the 1070 right now, rather than waiting for the 980 Ti price to drop?:helpsmilie: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Intel Core I7 4820K @4.3 GHz, Asus P9X79 motherboard, 16 GB RAM @ 933 MHz, NVidia GTX 1070 with 8 GB VRAM, Windows 10 Pro
Abburo Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 Even 9xx prices will drop down, I will not look back to them. Budget wise 1070 is a good deal, performance wise 1080 to go... As far as a I am concerned I will wait for factory overcloked 1080 from any trusted vendor. I will even take in consideration watercooled version because thermal throttling is present despite their claimed low power consumption. As stock remains and demand for the 980 Ti goes down, yes I'd expect reductions, but I never recall the Ti cards dropping all that much. Also, those two extra gigs of video memory on the 1070 is appealing. | Windows 10 | I7 4790K @ 4.4ghz | Asus PG348Q | Asus Strix 1080TI | 16GB Corsair Vengeance 2400 DDR3 | Asrock Fatal1ty Z97 | Samsung EVO 850 500GB (x2) | SanDisk 240GB Extreme Pro | Coolermaster Vanguard S 650Watt 80+ | Fractal Design R4 | VirPil T-50 | MFG Crosswind Graphite | KW-908 JetSeat Sim Edition | TrackIR 5 | [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Also, those two extra gigs of video memory on the 1070 is appealing. I think AMDs next card, their 480X or whatever is going to be the best performance per dollar card ever made, rumors currently state it as being roughly as fast as a stock 980, and in crossfire(dual gpu sucks), it's able to match the 1080. 250$ for an 8gb version, 200$ for a 4GB version. this will definitely bring the cost of the 980ti down, probably the 1080 too. keep in mind: best performance per dollar is not the same thing as best performance, the 1080/1070 are still better than the 480X if these rumours are true. There is some interesting talk going on about difference in quality settings for those benches. It is quite likely that pair RX480 just about matches 1080. Something tells me that we will see independent recreation of that bench soon enough ;) It's great that there will be something to drive down cost of NV cards but multi GPU or dx12 is really irrelevant to us. Scendore Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 What will actually be interesting is the 1080TI based on the GP 102. It's in between the 104 which is releasing now and the GP 100. What I am interested in is whether they use HMB2 memory which is really going to change things especially at 4K settings and VR.
