So I've been researching a new GPU for my rig and decided a GTX 1070 8GB is the way to go, and have been keeping an eye on a couple to see how pricing works.

Over the last 2 weeks, I've seen the cost of say Asus GTX 1070 Dual OC go from a reasonable £360 to £450! It's a similar story for others too, others are approaching the cost of 1080.

I've since read that a craze called "cryptocurrency mining" is to blame - people using mid-range GPUs to make meager profits over long periods on e-currency like Ethereum.

This has lead to a high demand in 1070s which has hiked the pricing.

Why did this have to happen the week I wanted to buy one?!!

Looks like I'll have to delay, and hope the prices come down soon.

But now's a good time to upgrade for me, so do I go low with 1060 and save some cash, or get a 1080 which is not as affected by the pricing rise but not as cost effective?

I guess AMD are affected too, but I prefer Nvidia having had issues with Radeon drivers in the past. Should I look at AMD options?

Anyone else in a similar boat?

I nearly was in the same boat with a 1080. I monitored prices like a month long and when i finally made a decission to buy one, price went up again. I was lucky to find a b-stock which i'm really happy with. Maybe that Would be a good way for you too...I personally wouldnt go for a 1060.

Personally I think prices have been at an all-time high for years. Not that long ago one could get a very decent mid-range card between 200 and 300 Euros, but ever since the 970 series there's been no use going below 330 Euros for a cheap one, or around 360 to 400 for most models. And that's only frigging mid-range compared to 980 and 980 TI! 1070 and 1080, even more expensive than that.

What's worse, used card prices are insanely high as well. It sometimes seems to me people actually make a profit selling used cards while they invest enough money to get a used car into a new graphics card.

Nuts! I work for a living and am currently unwilling to pour my hard earned cash towards nvidia or AMD. IMHO prices need to drop like 50% before I'd even consider upgrading (which also keeps me away from 4K and VR for the time being).

This new mining crisis... can't say I care whether cards are terribly or insanely expensive.

One potential up-side: Once mining turns unprofitable, we might finally see resonable prices for used cards. As long as people haven't burnt them all to hell with 24/7 work and too little cooling, that's probably going to be when I might consider upgrading. ;)

Good news everyone!

According to German news outlet heise online, Ethereum lost about half its value within the past 4 weeks.

If that trend continues, the current 1070 crisis might be over soon.

Nope it will not. Its not only about Ether. Ethererum mining was the trigger but nothing more. The newer GPUs are still very powerful and efficient for crypto mining and you can use them for any crypto currency. The run for these graphic cards may only stop in next days or weeks, when the people suddenly begin to think, that crypto currencies are a stupid idea, which will probably not happen. I guess the people, who want to buy a new graphic card, can only sit out the run until their need is covered and that will take a while.

If that mining market was more stable and predictable AMD and Nvidia would likely make cards JUST for them but that whole mining thing is highly volatile and my guess is that they wont do dedicated mining cards in larger numbers. I might be wrong tho, we will see

I am noticing that most people are purchasing a Nvidia 1080 Ti or similar caliber video cards.

I am currently using the GeForce Gtx 750 Ti which is good enough for DCS 1.5 (most of the time.. except campaigns with lots of crap going on around me.. then major Frame Rate drops).

DCS World 2 "recommends" the 780 Ti

Will the 780 Ti really do the job OR should I be getting a much higher Video Card to run NTTR and Normandy .... both of which are almost unplayable for me especially Normandy.

Recommended specs... they pretty much haven't been properly updated since 2014 when I started playing DCS, so you can throw them out of the window today when thinking about flying over Nevada or Normandy with anything above low settings. Even if there's some optimization to be done for both maps and 2.1.x renderer, they'll still need as much VRAM as you can get.

What's your screen resolution, and do you aim at 4K or VR in the near future?

With 4K, I believe most people recommend 1070 or above, although I think some players are on 980 and maybe even 970.

VR, for all I know, pretty much requires at least a 1080 for stable and high frame rates.

I'm on Full HD (slightly above, at 1920x1200) on 970 and NTTR and Normandy run fine on high details (not highest, but it's still very nice). :)

Of course, with DCS the CPU is definitely also required to be quite fast. All the graphics power in the world can't make it run smooth if the rest of the system isn't up for the task.

Hi Yurgon

Here are my system specs:

ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0

AMD FX-8350 8 Core 4.01 GHz

Water Cooled

16 Gig Corsair RAM

GeForce GTX 750 Ti

27" Monitor @ 1910x1080

I don't see myself using VR simply because I am too crippled to twist around looking overhead and behind (like in a real plane). This is one of the things I do like TrackIR over VR.

But as it turns out, my Motherboard is only PCIE 2.0

The 1080 video cards all seem to be PCIE 3.0

While I could plug a new card in, my system wouldn't be able to take advantage of the PCIE 3 benefits (whatever they are ?).

SO .. I will have to look for some other alternative for now maybe which will hopefully at least make DCS World 2 (NTTR and WW2 maps) playable which they currently are not ... especially the latter.

Any Suggestions ?

PS> I don't have any SSD's

I just don't see the value yet because load times are still too long even for those IMO and the storage capacity is costly. That said, it is an addition I will consider in the future. It's not a priority right now. Furthermore ... I HATE reloading Windows and Software and Updates etc. Drives me NUTS !

The difference between PCIe2.0 and 3.0 is the bandwidth. 3.0 has double the bandwidth over 2.0 but it should not be a bottleneck or cause a problem.

The weakest part in your setup is your CPU that could never really feed a 1080 with or w/o Ti extension imho.

SSD's do really lower loading time. My loading times for DCS are 20-23sec from Desktop into game. Loading missions is fast. I remember trying to load from an HDD on my old i7-920 and that was like 90sec for loading DCS and missions..oh boy...that took forever.

I would get a SSD and "clone" your OS to it, no need to reinstall from scratch if ou dont like that.

Haha, I know what you mean. ;)

I'm no CPU expert, but AFAIK Intel's Core CPUs tend to provide better single thread performance over AMD, and DCS loves single thread performance.

Anyway, I think your Nevada performance problems really come from the graphics card.

Like I said, I run 1920x1200 on a GTX 970 and while my FPS are not stellar, they're quite fine and most of the time 2.1 actually runs smoother than 1.5 for me. Let me put it like this: If you're even remotely thinking about going 1080, just grab a 970 (if any are available) and get a new CPU+Mobo+RAM. Such a bundle will probably cost the same as a single 1080. :smartass:

(The only downside being that new CPUs require Windows 10, if you don't have that already, and that a new Windows installation is unavoidable then).

Edit: Oh, and as for SSD - if you've tried it once, there's no going back! Windows boot-up times, DCS loading times, loading... anything, it's so damn fast, you'll wonder how you could ever live without it!

We sadly cannot help the "too expensive" issue but for anything else there are at least a dozen guys in here that always give funded advices and help you to sort things out.

Believe me, your CPU is also "out of question" to be a troublemaker for DCS or most other IPC dependant games.

CPU-Mobo-RAM + GPU + SSD at a later stage.

Yeah, it hurts, been there many times. The truth is hard to take when it is not pleasant but it would be dishonest to say your CPU is OK and all you need was a 1080Ti. That would be a dirty lie.
