how is everyone dealing with clickable cockpit in VR?

All of this is not good for VR. Not that it is not working or is bead but definitely is not immersive.

Only good solution will be some hardware add on for VR from cheep 50$ Leapmotion to some expensive gloves or similar.

This need build in support for 3D hands in game to work properly. Without is such hardware is pointless and will not work good in DCS. Flight inside is shown that this is doable. Maybe when ED finish support for VR controlers will work for Leapmotion or some gloves too.

And that will be ultimate immersion when you will use your hands in cockpit like in real things.

Yeah...but until this, the options we are discussing are the best options we have. Not sure I understand any of your other points, outside of the one in bold.

Yes, but...

That means you need to have the physical space to move your hands like you would in a real size cockpit.

Which means that if you are sitting at a desk, your hands will hit the desk, if you try to reach certain things in VR. Same problem, if you have a HOTAS, and you need to reach something close to your throttle, and your throttle isn’t the same size as it’s virtual counterpart, or not placed in the exact same place.

A mouse or trackball may be a better solution for a lot of VR users.

I use a trackball, that I mounted on a shelf, to my right.

Found a couple of trackpads that might work for its purpose. Anyone tried these out?

The latter might fit quite good on a kneeboard like this;

Agree. That adjustable kneeboard from MPS that he posted is clutch for wanting to put it on my thigh! I had been racking my brain trying to figure out how the hell I could come up with an easy/comfortable/non-DIY way to strap it to my leg...and this is perfect.

My thoughts was since I'm so cabled up anyway with the rift and my headphones one more cable wouldn't make much of a difference ... but each removed cable is a win I suppose :D

I have that exact kneeboard. I used to use it it with a mini-keyboard, but can see it working quite well for a touchpad. It, too, would be my solution, though I would think you might want a piece of stiff board/plate to mount the touchpad on and strap the whole thing to the kneeboard for good resuslts. In any case, with a little bit of tinkering, it should work great.

I have Oculus Rift with GTX1070 and it just doesn't feel good. It is something different, okay you are really feeling like you sit in an airplane but I don't recommend buying one yet. Resolution is bad and it isnt good for health. More than 1 hours make me sick and makes my eyes so tired. I wish I didn't buy it. Maybe Oculus version 2 or 3 will be usable but not this one...

I'm inclined to agree but your post is more suited to a different thread.

Pay no attention to above naysayers! The VR flight experience is so real, I took online flight lessons from an air force pilot based on training taught in the FAA manual. The lessons spanned 4 weeks and were in the L-39 Albatross jet trainer in DCS World, which has a high fidelity cockpit. The experience was so intense I was sweating profusely during my first several lessons. When I fly (now the A10C Warthog) I treat it as if it is the real thing, because it creates that kind of experience. I soon will be adding the Next Level Racing Motion Platform to my Rift / NLR cockpit and can only imagine how that will add to the immersion. Its great now and will only get better!

I learned how to use the mouse with my left hand. I have a space for a mouse on either side of the Warthog throttle and stick. So when I need to use the mouse, it’s only a couple inches away from either device, for both hands, if needed.

I’ve only had VR for a couple of days, but it has felt great, since I’ve already been using this setup anyways. :-)

Mouse camera 2017, webcam (mounted in front of throttle, facing the throttle), autohotkey, pink page turning fingerlette (on left index finger), trim buttons on the stick ( till I finish my finger mouse).

It’s basically TrackIR for your finger.

I picked up a logitech trackball, and using it on the left of my WH throttle. So I have the mouse on the right, and the trackball to the left. Both work fine together. Just getting used to using my left hand for the trackball usage. :-)

Aiming the mouse with my head and "clicking" with buttons on the HOTAS did it for me. I'd been avoiding play at all because the immersion was amazing, until you were forced to break it to reach for the mouse.

I found Elite: Dangerous was more approachable in VR because you could map everything you need to the HOTAS, but I simply got bored with Elite. Immersion breaking is probably the worst thing that can happen in a VR game and I've met exactly one game that did it well.

I use mouse and and sometimes small joystick on my hotas. It's ok, but gloves would be better. at the moment gloves are not 100% ready I think and they testing something with them. They are also very expensive.

Trackball on the right (easy to find and use with a center-mounted joystick) . I find moving the cursor with the headset very useful . UFC entries are very fast using this method .

I use a trackball on the left. Requires a bit more time to get used to, but you can fly the plane and operate the cursor at the same time.

And yeah, moving cursor with the head works best for small movements.

I'm using my hotas. I have my trim up button + modfier set as left click and trim down + modifier as right click. The first thing I do at the start of a flight is to center the mouse crosshair in the center of my view, after that, anything i'm looking to, I can click it easily.

Also is not disturbing at all cause the mouse crosshair dissapear after some seconds, so the first press I see the crosshair again and the second press is the "actual" click action.

It is really nice this way and saves me from the burden of getting my hands off the HOTAS.

I have a left handed trackball attached with Velcro to the side of my throttle and use a regular more with my right hand.

I use the vr controllers, its faster and develop better muscle memory. Plus it really draws you into the pit moving your hands where they actually go. Before people ask, the vr controllers sit in my lap or on the table in front of me. 98 percent of the time i just use the left hand as set throttle and click whatever you need to in flight with that hand and maintaining flight with right hand on stick. Depends on the Module...
