scharrk Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 Do you guys also have problems to get visuall to the carrier ball ? I see the green horizontal lights and at some point the ball mostly in red. Does it work at all ?
ED Team BIGNEWY Posted June 3, 2018 ED Team Posted June 3, 2018 working for me. 27" monitor 1080p at 3/4 mile I can see the ball, I zoom in a little when aligned but that is it. Mule Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 (edited) The Ball does work. In fact it works really well. Are using VR? If so it is well known due to the lower resolution that it is hard to see the ball without zooming. Also if the ball is in red is it high or low in relation to the horizontal lights? If so you need to setup correctly on approach. It's very sensitive. Edited June 3, 2018 by Mule Fighter Pilot Podcast.
key_stroked Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 the ball mostly in red. Does it work at all ? That means you're too low.
Jack McCoy Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 Even in VR, the ball is somewhat visible at 0.75 NM. Be aware that if you are too high or too low, you will never see the ball until you are very close to the carrier. i7-7700K@4.8GHz, 16Gb-3200, GTX-1080Ti-Strix-11Gb, Maximus IX Hero, Oculus Rift, Thrustmaster Warthog+F/A-18C, Logitech G940 Pedals.
VFA41_Lion Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 imo the the ball needs to be clearly visible at 1 mile of the carrier without needing to literally zoom in on the entire HUD to see it, because pilots in RL obviously don't have Elvish eyes

Biggus Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 Wonder if it is graphics settings dependent to at least some degree. I can see it but if you haven't done many circuits, then it's hard to know exactly where to look. At least for me, anyway. I'm finding it easier to pick up but don't really think it's visible enough with a 3440x1440 35 inch monitor. I don't put jets on the deck professionally, so for all I know I'm asking for something unrealistic.
Nealius Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 1080p on a 58cm monitor here. At a sane FOV the yellow ball is not discernible from the green datum lights until DME 0.4nm. Red is a bit easier to spot.
scharrk Posted June 4, 2018 Author Posted June 4, 2018 I don't use VR, and i know that i'm to low if the ball turns red ^^ I use a 32" Full-HD Monitor and run most settings on high, but hell, i can't see it and i really don't want to zoom in.
MrReynolds Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 Isn't this crying out for a separate "popout" window? That'll be useful. By the way - Fantastic release so far. LOVING the carrier landings.
lemoen Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 You have to zoom in quite a bit to get anywhere near realistic acuity. Remember, our eyes have a wide FOV and a 1 minute of arc "resolution".
Nealius Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 Zooming in typically fouls my "senses" as I'm used to flying with a wider visual reference.
Mule Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 Zooming in typically fouls my "senses" as I'm used to flying with a wider visual reference. Yep! I agree. I have to do it sometimes but this will inevitably mess up my flow. Fighter Pilot Podcast.
oldpop Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 Looking ahead, thru the HUD, things are hard to pick up due the the "darkness" on the second glass. Also had to see tgts!
Bonz Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 It's been well over 30 years since I did this for real (A-7E) but as I recall even in real life the ball was borderline visible at a mile... I remember seeing the ball and was just able to discern where it was relative to the datum... Real obvious if red. I also remember that how I was doing on my setup (On speed, on altitude at the 180, 450AGL and on speed at the 90), pretty much told me where to expect to find the ball.

Akula Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 I don't even look at the ball. I just keep the VV in the middle of the E and watch my speed. The rest is cake. proletariat23 Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 if they had a short cut in the sim, that could drop a picture in picture into the bottom of the screen, like the control display or the SA guide, that would fix everyone's difficulty no matter the problem be it FOV or resolution, screen size or technique. they could smart scale it in a sense, make it bigger farther away then bring it into realistic proportions as you came up on it. My buddy has experience with building sims for the private sector, on his rig which is a dome, it is absolutely a non object, you cannot see it, by the time you do, game over it's too late. On my screen which is a standard 65 inch monitor, you can see it, but only at a moderate distance. In VR, forget about it, it may as well not even be there.

I fly exclusively in VR and I can't see the ball at all on approach at any time, it may as well not be there at all. I'm flying approach visually and manage to trap once in every 30 or so approaches and when it does trap it's sheer luck! If we could have a small graphic of the ball lights pop up in the corner of the screen at say a mile out or so, something clickable in the "specials" tab under options for those who don't want it can de-select it, it would make life a bit clearer for those in VR. tekrc Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 honestly I think its fine how it is though cant try it in vr til I get home. but the ball is called and therefore should be visible at 3/4 miles which so far it has been and I can see it well before that. even there it is pretty easily tell if high or low and just gets better as you close in. I actually zoom out my view so I can see outside the canopy frame and have been getting consistent 2 and 3 wires which im fairly proud of since im out of town and stuck using a 360 controller

That would be awesome to have. I am sure we will hear, "Realism!" but we have the the red window control indicator so... Eldur Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 I see it only at realistic FOV. Exactly, and that's probably in the 30-40° range for most. Totally visible there. But just half a mile though, just a random screenshot I took. Be wary of Rainbow Dash showing off style flying, completely ignoring NATOPS, just doing what worked well on first try And by the way, before getting a window I'd much rather prefer the LSO talking. Back in the nineties there was a survey sim in which he kept saying "higher", "lower" or "on the ball" IIRC (that guy even gave a rating). If this was somewhat realistic, I can imagine we'd be getting this in DCS eventually when they bring and iron out the carrier module.
