2.5.4 - VR very intermittent shadow on one eye

More testing! I turned water detail down to Medium and all flickering stopped. Turned it back up, started again. Turned it back down, stopped again.

 

I'd say it has something to do with the water.

 

Made any changes there ED?

I have this black flickering issue with VR

I confirm this fixed it for me. High water settings brings the black flicker on and Medium water removes it. Medium looks terrible though after flying with High all the time :( Hope they fix it soon.

On a positive note, I noticed MUCH improved framerate and general smoothness. So I reckon these black artefacts are a by-product of the VR-optimisations that were included in this patch.

 

What VR optimisations? I have seen nothing to suggest there are any in this update.

Set water to medium...apparently when u have it on high after this update it will cause that bug everytime u have water rendered in ur FOV..

are you guys talking about the new 2.5.4 bug, where you have split seconds "black screens" mainly on a single eye, which feel like you were blinking with your eyes?

EDIT: ok, yes after reading the thread more carefully...yes i got the same issue...will test now with water set to medium....

 

EDIT: yes, setting water to medium does indeed fix the issue....but god water set to medium looks ugly.

 

ED fix it please quickly.

Okay left of field I haven't experienced it but I am still on 391.01 driver, maybe??

There are often things done in the background that don't make it into the patch notes. Don't forget about this:

 

 

"Virtual Reality Update

We see VR as an amazing tool to enjoy DCS World and the future of PC gaming for many. To make DCS World even better, we’ve been working on some great VR improvements that include:

  • Optimized VR performance.
  • Touch control that allows direct finger interaction with cockpit controls.
  • Touch control to allow the right and left Touch controllers to act as stick and throttle when positioned correctly in the virtual cockpit and holding down the middle-finger button."

Yes but that's Normandy. Performance there is indeed as horrible as it always was. Try the other terrains for a moment :)

 

 

I avoid Normandy as I have done since its launch, precisely because of the horrible performance. I'd love to fly there one day though, particularly with helicopters. Perhaps the inclusion of Speedtrees and the other upcoming optimisations will render it playable again...

Well once upon a time you could get mostly 90FPS with Rift using a 4Ghz CPU and a 980Ti free flight all helicopters, alas not not so good now. Shame it could be so good looking into shop fronts or spotting a blue bicycles such details. ;)

I reckon we did not get the first batch of these optimisations in 2.5.4. The changelog would have said so.

In any case, I would say that the VR performance in 2.5.4 is significantly worse. My benchmark is the Hornet 'On the Ramp' Persian Gulf instant Action mission, which is by far the most testing for VR. Worse than 2.5.3 and so are my other tests, e.g. F-5E Free Flight IA in Caucasus, and various Las Vegas Tour missions.

I was about to create a topic about that but I'm reassured, I'm not alone to having noticed that, the very intermittent shadows, specially with the new P-51 cockpit, but I see that plenty of people have noticed this issue.

Current workaround seems to be to set the Water texture to Medium

7800x3d, 5080, 64GB, PCIE5 SSD - Oculus Pro - Moza (AB9), Virpil (Alpha, CM3, CM1 and CM2), WW (TOP and CP), TM (MFDs, Pendular Rudder), Tek Creations (F18 panel), Total Controls (Apache MFD), Jetseat

I'm not sure if its one eye or two, but I've certainly noticed an intermittent shadow flicking across my FOV since 2.5.4 arrived yesterday ... irritating.

The shadow is a bug. Put water to medium or low fixes it for now.

 

My VR performance is way better in 2.5.4 and this bug is probably a result of ED implementing optimizations. Besides graphic changes, Sweetspot is tighter, FPS is better and shimmering/jaggies are almost gone entirely (PD 1.6, MSAA OFF). So Im guessing

we already got some of these VR optimizations in 2.5.4

I love too much seeing water in high settings

 

 

So for now, I'll continue to use the release, waiting a fix.
