Tholozor Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 (edited) As far as recoveries go, yes, they refer to their parent ship as "Mother." However each ship has its own individual callsign. When referring to Approach or Marshal, they use the ship's unique callsign. e.g. The John C. Stennis' actual callsign is "Gold Eagle." So over the radio it would be "Gold Eagle Approach", or "Gold Eagle Marshal." EDIT: "Gold Eagle" is actually the USS Carl Vinson, my mistake. mikemadmax20 Posted March 12, 2019 Posted March 12, 2019 Are these call signs implemented in DCS's F/A-18 module? I've been flying Instant Action's Case 1 landings and can't seem to get the Stennis to respond. Any advice.

The callsigns don't mean anything to DCS, those are just the real-world callsigns, maybe once we get the new LSO system in place we might see something like that. As far as talking to the carrier, check what frequency the ship is set to in the mission editor. Nealius Posted March 12, 2019 Posted March 12, 2019 I'd like to pick the brains of the people who create callsigns / operation names. Some of them make sense (Like Roosevelt being "Rough Rider"), but others make me wonder how much they were smoking when they came up with the callsign.
mikemadmax20 Posted March 12, 2019 Posted March 12, 2019 Tholozar: Thanks for the heads up on the mission editor. Since the F-18 release, I've been doing more trouble shooting trying to set up my second monitor with viewports and HELIOS panels than flying. As soon as I get everything sorted out, I'll be in my modest pit and flying missions as I use to do in the A-10 and BMS's F-16. A lot of work still ahead but, thanks again for your input.
Lobo LXII Posted March 12, 2019 Posted March 12, 2019 And for fictional names, I don’t recall the name of the carrier in the book Flight of the Intruder, but I’m pretty sure the radio callsign for it was “Battlestar”. I read that one in 8th grade when it first came out in paperback, so my memory is fuzzy. I want to say the Shiloh, but it could have been the Shenandoah.:dunno: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Tholozor Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 What was your source? A lot of Googling. I unfortunately never bookmarked the pages I found them on and just wrote them all down in a txt. I did however manage to find all their 3-digit TACAN/IRCS codes in ACP 113 (unclassified callsign book for ships). Sedlo Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 Battlestar I think was the callsign of the fictional USS United States in Final Flight (re-reading in advance of the coming release) I want to say the Shiloh, but it could have been the Shenandoah.:dunno: My Youtube Channel MY DCS MISSIONS

Some of them make sense (Like Roosevelt being "Rough Rider"), but others make me wonder how much they were smoking when they came up with the callsign. Sometimes it makes sense...others it’s purely random. Castle AFB in Merced California was Fog Patch...and anyone who’s flown there understands why. It gets foggy there in mornings. At Beale the SR-71 callsign was “Aspen”...so the U2s took Pinion. (A tree that grows higher in the mountains than an Aspen tree.) schurem Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 They sound like they are given much like pilot callsigns are given: plays on the names or histories of the ships. Forrestal had a terrible fire happening due to procedural errors. Hence handbook. George Bush Sr. flew TBM bombers in the war, hence avenger. I5 9600KF, 32GB, 3080ti, G2, PointCTRL

I've looked for ages. Tholozor Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 Okay, so looking into it, "Johnny Reb" is the Stennis' nickname, not it's radio callsign as far as I can tell.
