Pre-supposing that I still can play a DCS module I purchased via Steam after ED goes down,

You still would need to authenticate against ED for auth data, as in standalone. So there is no difference.  Offline mode is only so long.

Thank you for that information. I've previous read here that

Also with the Steam version, the authorization check is processed via Steam servers and not via ED servers. Due to that, Steam guarantees functionality even after the developer/publisher retreats from steam / goes bancrupt. If ED ever stops supporting DCS (i.e. after going bancrupt), the Standalone version will most propably be completely unfunctional and ready for uninstall, while the Steam version will still be functional. At least single player will be.

Now I no longer know what is true, so I'm glad I only used that particular case as an hypothetical 🙂

Pretty sure, if ED went bankrupt, they would do something to keep people having access to their current licenses. Not sure I would even worry about this.

As for steam vs standalone, ED have stated they happy either way so not sure why this is still being discussed.

Make the choice that works for you

Steam Vs Standalone - standalone gives you access to both sets of sales, steam only gives you access to steam sales.

Oh really? I thought you had to either buy on one or the other platform for everything. Is that because if I'm on Standalone, I can buy on Steam then transfer it across to Standalone?

Cool I didn't know you could do it piecemeal. Interesting. Not sure I'd ever find it useful, but good to know 🙂

Yeah, I mostly don't buy modules on steam but it's nice to have both options for sales.

2 options (standalone edition) better than 1 option (steam edition). QED

Unless the answer is "today", it's always in "two weeks". It's an industry standard, so I hear.

I don't. It was brought up in the context of a thought experiment as a purely hypothetical case versus if Steam went bankrupt (which I also don't worry too much about). What can I say, no real problems to worry about. Must be Friday 🙂

At least 3 extremely resourceful RB F-15E Discord members were joined to RB Moderator group as SMEs.

A former WSO and 2 CCs. If you want to tweak a flight model, tune up radar other pieces planned for EA release, you want this crowd under your flag.

Pure gold IMHO.

I'm not knocking your decision whatsoever.  To each their own.  I don't use Steam for DCS (I personally don't want ED to take the 30% haircut), but I do use it for some games (I could give a frig less if EA takes a 30% haircut, or a 90% haircut for that matter).

That said, I often worry about having so many games under one tent.  If Steam's servers go down, or they go out of business, there's going to be a whole bunch of things that I can't play.

A few weeks ago I couldn't launch anything until I updated Steam, and the update server wasn't in good shape (at least from my network), leaving me without my content for maybe an hour ... admittedly not long ... but enough to realize "oh crap, I have so much tied up in that thing that if Steam has a bad hair day, I'm out quite a bit of my content".

I get the convenience, but centralization is kind of a double-edged sword. One company could take 20, 30, 50, 100 of your titles (and thousands of your entertainment dollars) with them if they go down.

I mean, if you worry about such things.

My thinking is along these lines also.

Believe me I use Steam a LOT nothing against them, heck I have over 900+ games there. I just changed to DCS stand alone to do my little thing to help ED thrive in such a niche market. This was way back when they were just starting to become what they are today, an OS for flight sims with greeat third party developers, so I wanted to support that. I’ve read a lot reasons why not to support ED like alot of us do and a lot of them I never even thought of but can make perfect sense. So whatever floats your boat is fine but if you are able I would encourage you to switch..

To cfrag) I also have all the other third party game apps on my PC and have no issues with them and as far as I am concerned its all Steam. I just click on a icon and it opens the appropriate app and starts the game. Not knocking your history with them I just wanted to let others know thats not always the case.

With that said the IRS  man left something under my pillow and now I'm the proud owner of 55 dollars and 95 cents worth of F-15 air.

🙂

  Happing flying!

But you can rest assured the delayed delayed Pre-order won't delay the unkown release date.

I was actually around when Steam first started and this was a big concern of users and Steam said if they ever go under they would remove all the DRM on your games. Not sure  I believe them but I don't think they will go out of business anytime soon now. I'll probably be "gone" before they are so I'm not worried.

That's comforting ... somewhat.   I think.

You'll excuse me for being a little jaded, though.  If they sell, they'll lose the ability to fulfill that promise.

"Even ardent supporters of the company were immediately skeptical that Facebook’s business model could rot the foundation of Oculus’ VR ambitions with invasive user-tracking and ad serving.

To assuage such fears, Facebook, on behalf of Oculus’ founder, Palmer Luckey, promised in no uncertain terms that users would never be required to log-in with Facebook to Oculus headsets, nor would developers need to do so to develop content for those headsets.

It was the day of the announcement of Oculus’ acquisition that Luckey took to the Oculus community on Reddit to offer explanations to angry supporters. “I guarantee that you won’t need to log into your Facebook account every time you wanna use the Oculus Rift,” he said in response to a Redditor asking if he could at least promise that much.

Yesterday the company demolished that promise when it announced that it would begin requiring all new users of Oculus headsets to log-in with a Facebook account starting in October, and that existing users would also be required to log-in by the end of 2022 if they wanted to retain full use of their headsets.

I’d say it’s not even doable but to be fair this was a long time ago and things were a lot different with Steam positioning them as the DRM on their platform.

Only steam to standalone. No standalone transfer to steam

Which is why I use steam as if I ever have to transfer across to standalone I still have my modules. I was Steam in the beginning then went to standalone because people said to do so. was there for a couple of months, had massive issues with updating and then the game messing up and refusing to play requiring a complete reinstall so migrated back to steam for game repair convenience and download speed and I've been there ever since. It just works so much better for me and to shut us steam users out on this pre-order is an appalling decision by Razbam.
