DCS Newsletter 3rd March 2023 - Normandy 2.0 | Hoggit server

Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,

We are pleased to update you on the development of the upcoming DCS: Normandy 2 map by Ugra Media who created the original Normandy 1944 and Syria maps. This is a massive enhancement to the most important WWII theatre and we are pleased to share Ugra-Media’s impressive progress; it is truly remarkable.

The Normandy 2 map, which is nearing completion, will include free upgrades to the existing Normandy 1944 map. It will also be available as a single, purchasable module. Please note that those of you who already own Normandy 1944 or Channel maps, the Normandy 2 upgrade will be available for only $14.99. Please read the details below and check out the Development Screenshots.

Our friends over at Hoggit are pleased to invite you to join their multiplayer server and growing space on Reddit. We are blessed to see all the growing communities and for all the effort going into them by the administrators and moderators. Thank you!

And thanks to all of you. Your trust, passion and support make our dreams come true.

Yours sincerely,

Eagle Dynamics

Lighter than usual newsletter this time around. If I had to guess, some of the meat had to get chopped as a result of the patch getting delayed

Confusing, if it's a free upgrade to Normandy 44 why is it being offered at 14.99?  Or is a partial facelift to their older map, and is the older one a bit smaller perhaps?  I don't remember Paris being on it, not that I've flown it much.  So in the end do we end up with three Normandy maps?

The free Normandy 1944 map update will not have the same level of detail as the Normandy 2 map.

Will they be incompatible for online?

The Normandy 1944 map will be updated such that it will be compatible with the Normandy 2 map in both single player and multiplayer.

From the Oct 7th newsletter it said that if you own the Channel and Normandy map the upgrade will be $9.99.

No mention of this in the current newsletter. Just the $14.99 price. So is this still the case?

I usually don't complain but you mention in todays Newsletter that they use real world weather on Hoggit servers, while they may have some weather app giving info it is pretty bad at representing real world weather.

Most of the time the weather looks like it is in northern Europe,

like this:

Screen_230203_234550.jpg

While there are numerous weather sites that show weather in real time and over PG (as this is where this image was taken) they show nothing.

Like this:

Screenshot (15).png

Hardly real time weather images,

I know this is not ED problem and nothing ED can do about (only add weather zones) but I just wanted to point it out.

And yes I have asked, as I believe many did the same, on Hoggit discord to revise the live weather but they say its working fine...

So the weather is far from real time weather. Same applies to other servers like Through The Inferno etc...

Normandy 2 looking great! Even though I don’t fly warbirds nearly enough as I should, it will be a great addition/upgrade. As far as Hoggit, used to be a favorite of mine until they started using “pure scripts”. No display exporting allowed=not playing, for me. Good set of servers though regardless.

Real Weather has planned in a future, but actually has centred on clouds and storms.

Quote

Weather
Building upon the weather enhancements that were introduced with DCS 2.7, we have been further developing weather to include moving clouds and towering cumulus clouds and more sophisticated atmospheric phenomena. New fog and dust storms are being developed that are integral parts of the volumetric cloud system. The old DCS fog is a separate system that is calculated for a flat earth. It does not consider shadows from the terrain and clouds, so it has limitations. The new fog will be computed for a spherical earth and takes shadows into account. We also plan to optimize the volumetric clouds and increase their basic quality. A separate and complex project currently in development is the dynamic cloud generator which will then need to be integrated with the dynamic weather systems of low/high pressure systems and new/evolving cloud types.

A later task, once the foundation is complete, will be to provide AI line of sight blocking in addition to light direction/scattering visibility limitations for AI.

Depends on the aircraft used 😉 I fly off the boat and there are helicopters as well 🙂 you can take off in a fighter jet from the field or road in DCS without a problem.

Sure?

Meanwile some landing strips has not planned to use with moder fighters, others has airbase has modern fighters capables. And dont see any problem to take off from a grass airport.

its still usable in a "cold war gone hot" scenario, especially if using early-to-mid cold war air frames.
