Trees are way too big and it's killing the sense of speed at low altitude

Everything is in the title.

We only seem to have giant trees. Perceived scale of the terrain is completly wrong. So is the sense of speed.

I only regain a proper sense of speed when I see some road trafic and cars.

Is there a mod around which reduce the size of tree 3D model ?

Hi, I dont agree with you about the trees scale but can I ask you what resolution you are running and what aspect ratio you have.

thanks

Hi BN !

I'm running DCS in VR with oculus max resolution and PD set at 1.0

My IPD is set in game to a point where everything in the cockpit feels "right" especially my legs and torso ^^

Regarding the tree scale, I can't help notice at low altitude that most of them are very tall. This is obvious when they are right beside 3 or 4 storey building (I'm thinking Syria).

Hi,

yes the tall trees are apparently common in Syria and the middle east, especially psalm trees.

Regarding speed, the illusion of speed can be increased with a bigger FOV which in this case will depend on your headset FOV.

Yes I know about the relation between FOV and sense of speed. Before VR and DCS ruined every other hobbies of mine, I was playing Assetto Corsa.

The fact is, whenever I fly over cars, I suddenly get a proper sense of scale, and I can't help myself thinking : " Wow ! I'm fast after all".

Therefore my sense of scale is wrong most of the time, I believe (but could be wrong) the big trees are a likely culprit.

Not in Caucasus, though. Just try landing a Huey near one, you'll see. It's not that pine or birch or whatever can't grow that big, but a random tree in an urban area looks like something that you'd normally find deep in an old growth forest, after it's been growing there for a hundred years or so. Most trees are a lot smaller than that, and don't tower over buildings unless it's Lombardy poplar, which doesn't look a whole lot like a pine. Trees in commercial pine forests don't typically have a chance to reach the same heights as the ones in DCS, either.

If it was an occasional giant tree, OK, those things do exist, it's just that currently, every single one looks that way. That does throw the sense of scale off, not only the feeling of speed, but also of altitude. Lack of any smaller trees further contributes to the issue.

there is some ground on this statement. trees do come as 40m high. what ED could do is do some scalar size randomization like variations in height egg. hilltop smaller valley larger gradually scaling. its plausible. they are either bushes or tall as building and more of them should fill the gap in between. its also valid for vehicles vs roads/railway track size comparison. a assume that in VR those scales do have different effect.

The most common reason people state that trees in the Caucasus map are so tall, is performance. Smaller trees means you need more of them to provide enough cover in forested areas which would dramatically increase the system requirements.
The trees on the Syria map don't seem oversized to me.

The Caucasus map was also made using older terrain technology, so that's perhaps the reason behind the lack of variation on size of trees? Some trees in urban areas indeed do look quite silly if you compare them to the buildings they're standing right next to 🙂

The Caucuses trees are definitely too big. I've never been there, but they still appear much too large. It doesn't bother me though.

Some of the planes, but all of the maps!

Trees can be (and should be) wide and short for coverage.  Rather than thin and tall.  As far as performance, it doesn't matter the proportion as long as it's same number of polygons.

Any mod around taking care of this issue ?

No bug or issue here, correct as is, and also there are different sizes of trees in Caucasus. Trees around 5-storey are perfectly normal and fine in the cities of temperate climate. That you're used to see smaller trees is not a DCS problem.

It’s hilarious that people don’t know how big trees are or if they live in the desert or Antarctica, simply can’t search a picture of them 😆

True. I have several trees close to my house that are over 100 ft tall, and this isn't especially unusual.

I live in the high desert in Idaho USA and even in my neighborhood the majority of trees are equivalent to 3-5 story buildings. The pine trees around can be much much  taller getting into the forest… however there are an equal amount( not a statistic) of smaller 1-2 story trees and smaller all over. I personally think the whole tree system needs a revamp ( Taz’s mods are amazing for this). Time to ditch the billboard trees 😁

A lot of praying goes into those trees, so they grew tall 🙂

In the game almost every tree is bigger than a five stories building as in your screenshot, obviously not the case in the real picture.

There are trees 30meters and above and that's perfectly normal, what is not is the lack of smaller trees.

Just took in a screenshot in a random place near sochi and selected the smallest one.

The redundancy of trees is not helping, but that's just a game, they do what they can, it may be reworked later.

I agree it's not a bug but I do recognize the issue.  I don't think ED would do anything about it but it is an issue nonetheless.  Need to look at what height is average and dominant.  Not "huge trees do exist somewhere."

This is Kobuleti.  Mostly 2-3 story high.  Taller trees do exist but not many.

image.jpeg

This is Kobuleti in DCS.  Mostly 7-8 story trees average and 2-3 story are few like the one by the house in front.

And this is Kutaisi and Tbilisi  irl. Those MFs are big! Plus (first pic) a view from my apartment (5th floor) in Poland. This birch is way taller than my building (15m).

I think the real problem ("problem"?) is that trees in cities are usually much smaller than in woods, while in DSC (and the other sim) they are everywhere the same size. I think I can live with that (at least I prefer this than extra 10GB of trees models on my hard drive). Just check the other sim and you'll see 30m tall trees in backyard gardens.

I think living with that is what we've all been doing and that's different that saying it is "correct as is"

+1 for trees appear too big in many scenarios.

The lower and slower you move, the more off it appears.
