Hello DCS,

A major concern about DCS is that it doesn't offer cloud backup for my key bindings and game settings.
In case your drive need to be formatted, you lost everything.

I would be happy to implement this myself but I don't know enough about the structure of DCS on the file system.

Thank you

That's a 40GB file in my case, do I need to save the whole thing?

Some of the planes, but all of the maps!

Things you mostly want:

saved games\dcs\config\input\ - your control profiles

saved games\dcs\config\options.lua - your DCS settings

saved games\dcs\mission editor\logbook.lua - your log for stats and campaigns' progress

saved games\dcs\missions\ - your custom missions

Perfect timing Max.

I just had to repair DCS and spent over an hour last night looking for my logbook, options settings, Key bindings, all that stuff. Basically, all the bits Draconus listed as well as keeping a copy of Saved Games like MaxSenna said.

Having typed that, I’ve yet to get DCS to recognise my Main Options settings even though I’m sure I’ve replaced them where they should be. That’s me though and I spend pretty much every waking hour 80% asleep.

i would’ve posed this question myself last night if I hadn’t got my head too far into folders so thank you.

No, not at all .. I used the MKLINK command to link the /Saved Games/DCS/ important folders, with cloud locations. It looks like this:

The folders that I backup on the cloud are:

Config
Kneeboard
Liveries
MissionEditor
Screenshots
and StaticTemplate

I don't backup the Mods folder, because its content is already a copy of my OvGME library, so no need to back it up.

This scheme has worked fine for me so far, and the versioning ability of OneDrive allows me to recover any of my missions to a specific point in time:

Cheers!

While I could see Eagle posting "Not planned" on this, I really think this could be tied in with a mod manager I have often requested and the user files section. If ED doesn't want to spend a ton of money for space to host mods and other files, then I would enable the user to set up hosts.

For example mods/ community modules might have a host.lau in the root folder, which has the mod manager look there.

Then you could have an option to upload your missions

If you’ve got cloud backup for your PC (and you should). Then just add C/users/yourname/Saved Games to your backup. Done.

Easy but inefficient, as it will backup items not needed.

Maybe it depends on the service. With Carbonite you can select which folders or files if you want to. I have my entire PC backed up with the exception of programs. The whole point of this is to back up your entire machine, that can be a life saver.

I totaly agree, but it might be easier for many users if they already have the cloud space. Don't all cloud storage spaces do dedup now, so it's only the first copy that will be ineffecient and take a while?
Honest question!

Yes, only the first copy to cloud takes a long time, afterwards only changed files get updated ... but inneficient means not only time, but also space ... saved games contains a lot of information not relevant, like shaders, mods, tracks, logs, not to mention files from other games ... and as Cloud space tends to be limited or subject to a monthly cost, I prefer to backup only those items actually important.

Away from my PC. I believe it’s actually C/users/your name/Saved Games

and then DCS or any other game.

Heck yes, highly support this...

Why? Anyone can just set their own cloud backup to save any files they wish. Why do you need ED to do this for you?

I use my one drive folder also for backups.

The backup used in DCS is for updates when it finds mods and so on.

Generally DCS does not touch the saved games config inputs folder unless a developer has actually changed something with the controls setup for a module.

Forget about DCS files. Having Cloud backup for your PC is very important. I think that should be obvious. It’s a simple matter to add whatever folders you like to this.

I used to use OneDrive for this but I've seen OneDrive causing 100% CPU spikes so I only turn on sync when I need something backed up.

Veering off topic but.. No, you shouldn’t just back up just when you decide to, you want this continually running in the background. So if you accidentally delete something it’s automatically saved. It’s too late to decide you want something backed up after it’s gone. These things can’t possibly take up that many resources like CPU usage etc.
