Yeah, you are right! Afghan, Kola and SA look terrible down low, however it is said that the Afghanistan SW portion is in EA and WILL be improved, hopefully!

I agree with you though that UM would make it much nicer ... unless all developers will use the "new" approach to maps.

The Falkland islands actually are not bad at all at "helo" low altitude. Admittedly, it's mostly grasslands with some curved streams and minor settlements, but quite pretty nonetheless.

Doing this for a densely populated area such as discussed in this thread, might be too big of a challenge though.

At the moment, I do agree with you. If I had to choose now between another satellite or "artificial" map (like Sinai of Syria), I'd prefer the latter.

Quite the opposite.

We were just too good to pick up on the leaks they have posted and now those were removed as to not reveal the map before revealing it.

We know what we saw, it's just a matter of time.

There's an inaccuracy in this screenshot - the developed part on the right hand edge of the screen (aft of the Fulcrum that's peeling off) hasn't been there at the time that screenshot's supposed to have happened (let's say prior to the mid 90s). It was developed much later. How do I know? Well, I literally lived just right off the edge of the screenshot. The multistory housing real estate seen in that place on the screenshot was just built within the last 6 years or so.

dcs-world-flight-simulator-314-flaming-cliffs-2024.jpg

The pic below was taken in 2012, when development in that area was just about starting - the house where I lived wasn't even built by then. You can see the municipality building already in place, though. You can also clearly see the former northern runway had been re-naturalized and the A113 had been built in it's way to connect south with Berliner Ring A10 at Schönefelder Kreuz (Schönefeld Intersection). The former southern runway is now BER's northern runway. The East German Schönefeld Airport Terminal (used to be Terminal 5 at BER) is now abandonned.

The first Fulcrum's livery in that screenshot  is the Fulcrum farewell tour 2003 though...

By which time the border (close to the upper right corner in the screenshot) wasn't a thing anymore.

Photograph is from 1999. Compare the (former) border to how it looks like in the screenshot. You can also see the difference in housing.

This is what the border looks like today. Location of this pic is within the pic linked above:

Yeah I get that. I understand your points completely, ED long said they can do only that much in terms of accuracy and if the satellite imaginery is showing urban area it will use the urban tiles in the map.

Let's hope we can influence it a bit in the future

The first scene looks like it was taken on the Kola map, but I'm not sure. Could also be somewhere around the various lakes near Berlin/Potsdam :dunno:
The second one definitely looks like the Germany map.

Have they actually shown images that were geolocated further south? I care more for Fulda than Berlin (in the context of DCS).

Not to my knowledge, the images released so far are mostly ambiguous.

For me I'll absolutely take the North German plain over Fulda (it does have a bit more strategic importance, though many of our aircraft fit on the central area and we don't have many that would fit on the north - the RAF from that period is basically absent), though both would be ideal.

Kola? With this detail? And buildings don't match ( urban tiles)

But North German plain is so plainly plain. It's in the name already. You can make Brandenburg/MeckPomm terrain from a single polygon.

Could be Berlin Spandau. Spandauer See looking southward. It looks a bit too rural for that, but maybe it's realistic for the pre-unification era?

That would be -by the way- only a few kilometers north of RAF Gatow.

This would be a great map because we could recreate lot of conflicts that happened in that region, unfortunately there were a lot of them, and almost every one of them involved an air campaign.

The combination of sea and mountains, lakes, river canyons, diversity of eastern and western infrastructure. I think the ED should seriously consider this suggestion, if they haven't already.

Interesting to see both "Fulda Gap" and Kosovo mentioned. Unless they are doing it on maps that would allow a look-alike (highly likely), this is a serious breach of NDA

The wording isn't that ambiguous imho: The Fulda Gap seems to refer to an actual module, working title "Fulda Map". The Kosovo refers to a historical configuration of the helicopter, as used in Kosovo and does not refer to a map module.
I don't know if that would count as a serious NDA breach. A Cold War Germany map was indirectly confirmed through ED's marketing material over and over again...

Hey there, what do you guys think. How big is this map going to be? Only northern Germany? And if so, do you think it'll actually reach down to Fulda? Since it's called Fulda Gap and not Cold War Germany, i guess we won't get the entire country. But that would be a shame.

Because in case of a Soviet invasion of West Germany there wouldn't just be responses from Rammstein, Geilenkirchen and Nörvenich but also Rheine, Wittmund, Neuburg and others all over Germany.

Let's say we only get a small portion in the middle of Germany, then most of the still active GAF bases wouldn't even be on it. Pick the northern half, then the Bavarian guys will be pretty pissed and a lot of flat land will be depicted. Pick the southern half and piss off the Frisians and block off the possibilty to use the Supercarrier on the map.

Or do you think, we will only see Eastern Germany, from the fence to Poland?

And, since this is a Whish List channel, here's my little wish as a born Wuppertaler. Maybe i can buzz the 'Schwebebahn'?^^ No trains needed, just the railways and stations would be enough for me.^^ The "Flight-Sim" with the Snail managed to disappoint very hard in their depiction. Gerneric, way too small village, no elevation, no 'Schwebebahn'. xDD

just ran across this thread. i was stationed in Wildflecken 1/68 armor 1/1985 - 1/1987. this is a pic from the barracks up toward the motor pool. this base was important to the Fulda Gap strategy. A-10s would park on a little airstrip on the base.

The map name is actually not known yet. This thread was created and named way before we even knew that there is a Germany map in development.
