One thing I've noticed is that once hitting the deck I really pull back on the stick to plant the tail and ensure it catches a wire. at 90kn it wants to be up on 2 wheels and I wonder if that has the hook passing too high? Haven't had a close look on external view to see whats going on

I tried watching track replays and it’s hard to tell what’s going on because the hook clips into the ship. The clipping is listed as a known issue, but I don’t know if that affects how it works. All I can say is that official missions seem to have it working.

I've been only testing with custom missions, and have never missed a wire (well outside of completely clowning it and landing way long), however that is with me consciously watching attitude - I would have the thought from the external view that the hook was plenty low enough.

This isn't a technique issue, the hook clips into the ship and doesn't interact with the wire sometimes. It appears to be map dependent and not universally affecting users. When you are just taxiing around on the Essex with the hook down I notice it clips into the deck and does not interact with the wires (caucuses and other maps). I bet this is having something to do with it. Wish I knew why it only seems to affect some users.

went 3 for 3. launch and trap.  woot!  just gotta watch out for that engine torque.  keep her steady.

I am pretty sure this is a software issue. I have not had a single instance where the hook engaged a wire on a map other than caucuses. I tried three times on Marianas WWII, then another two on Syria just for good measure. Then I go back to caucuses and I trap 3 for 3.

This is the worst kind of bug, inconsistent, only applies to certain users, and I am one of them...

I'm going to try running a repair.

And I am still having issues with this which appear to be map based. I can now trap consistently on the caucuses training mission and a caucuses mission I created myself, but the hook does not seem to interact with the wires on Marianas, I haven't had a single trap there.

I can now confirm the hell out of this.  Did 4 flights off the deck and circled back around to land and should have caught a wire every time.  All 4 flights on the Marianas WW2.  Check the time stamps.  I went back and got external shots on flights 1 and 2.  For some odd reason, flights 3 and 4 did not save after the flight.

The first 3 approaches were completed the Britt way and the 4th approach was a straight in just to see if I could float her down to a wire.  No dice.  Fairly confident there is an issue here.

Watch my video above, I got this on landing in the Marianas from the side view on replay

Here is one of the best reference videos I have ever seen landing the Corsair on carriers narrated from the British pilots who flew her.  Going to use this as a guide to start landing her in DCS.  Highly recommend the watch.  Great footage.

@Devil 505 Thanks for the great video link (and your YT video's). Found this video on the same channel describing the UK Fleet Air Arm CASE 1 pattern equivalent

FYI, I flew the Marianas quick start 'carrier take off' mission this morning and my plane trapped every single time. Furthermore, the comm's (changed Carrier to a/c freq. first) and LSO rating system seems to be working too. Are you using the mission(s) that comes with the module or designed one yourself in the ME?

Interesting.

On all the attempts so far that had me actually touch the deck, I trapped (8-10 traps total so far). Single mission built by myself on Mariannas WW2.

Yes, the hook will skip (and it does clip the deck, which seems to be a known issue). Usually I'll catch the wire abeam of the aft part of the island and stop normally.

Have you tried approaching lower and cutting earlier?

On the subject of the new Essex Carrier - anyone know why the hanger lifts keep randomly dropping about a foot or two, some time into the mission, and thus making it impossible to takeoff?

When I try to align with the landing deck I always have the plane sideways I tried with the various trims but nothing (wind set to zero knots). If anyone has advice it would be very welcome.

The premade missions seem to be working fine, it’s custom missions where I’m seeing issues.

@-Rudel- Is there any difference between a training mission and a custom one? Does the carrier require any additional settings or is it just a piloting technique? Thanks for your reply.

Outstanding find! I will adopt the above.  Been using a mission that I created on the new WW2 Marianas.  I have not tried on the training one yet.  Going to give it another shot later.  Maybe it is me, but from my external view, I was on the deck and dragging the hook across all the way to the end and did not grab anything.  Going to keep at it.  Really appreciate the above, I will go watch the video and steal that screen shot of the pattern you posted.

I have a couple questions for the guys who have fails with home-made missions on the Mariannas map.
What is the speed of the Essex?
What is the course of the Essex?
What is the wind velocity?
What is the direction the wind is blowing?
That's all, Thanks!

@Devil 505, the screenshot is taken from the video. The video is apparently former training material, rather then testimonials (ref. your excellent find). (1) I have the feeling your (none) trap issues might have something to do with the ME and/or (failing) scripts or the 'know issue' reported by M3 in their release notes

  • Hook clipping through ground and carrier

(2) The stutters you showed I don't have, but do see drastic FPS fluctuations around the carrier. Luckily I only noticed them on the FPS graphs (pop up window) and not so much during the actual flying. Stuttering is not uncommon with first releases (modules, maps) and are normally fixed by ED/Dev's in upcoming patches.

Here's a looooooong video (about 40min) of my "daytime carrier quals". Did 12 traps on the Essex though only 10 were needed IRL (and only 8 in one day). When I edited the mission, I forgot to adjust the wind direction, so there's a constant 10mph cross-wind. I figured it's an opportunity to practice crabbing even if it's not realistic.

Same for me.  Problem was the cockpit jockey!

Reports of the Essex being bugged because people can't trap the Corsair like a Hornet/Tomcat are simply pilot error.

Watch reflected's video.  It will help tremendously.

I was able to get it to work, my technique was just terrible. Reflected's carrier landing video helped me a lot.

I stand corrected as well and owe Magnitude an apology for stating it was broken before I did a little more flying and testing.  Reflected's video helped with the proper approach altitude and speed.  I was landing it too close to the Hornets approach.  I am uploading a video now to show it can be done with no issues and to prove the WW2 map works with it just fine.  I will post it on here shortly.

To avoid confusion, I have pulled my last video off the channel, so it does not mislead anyone.  Thanks to all who posted comments and assisted with their advice as well.  This community never ceases to amaze and impress me with the like minded love and appreciation for these aircraft and the attention to detail.  I must say I am a little embarrassed the Sierra show I put on display for everyone to see was actually my terrible piloting skills. Improved landings to come!

@Reflected Thanks for the great video brother! This one I think probably helped a lot of people who are trying to land the old girl right.

Here is the video referenced in my post above.

At the start of the video, I also did a comms tutorial because I have not seen anyone use SRS or the radio yet in a video.  The guys and I struggled to get it working at first, but we were just missing one small flip of a switch.  Good to go now.
