  1. 1. Caucasus V2

    • New countries and new places in Georgia really cool option, so "Fully new build"
    • Remastered based on old map, some kind of retexturing
    • no, thanks. I already have Caucasus.

There are a number of ski resorts in Iran, yet you cannot get any snow on the peaks in DCS no matter what weather/date settings you try.

I once met a man who fought there…

I don’t know for sure, but looking at the unit history the areas around Nalchik - Mayskiy - Mozdok - Beslan would have been about the front line / FEBA at the time for that particular unit

… so very much on our map

The German front line barely crossed into the detailed part of our map. And while @razo+r is quite right in saying that our map lays mostly south of the WWII front line, the detailed part of our map is also a lot farther East from where the German front line was. My choice of words was following the name of the front itself. But in order to recreate WWII scenarios on the Eastern front, we would really need a new map.

The problem with that vid is the small scale…

Pause it for early Nov 42 and you’ll see that the western coastal area had been occupied, as well as Krasnodar and Maikop inland.  At the furthest German push eastwards, the forward elements failed to reach Grozny, having run into heavy resistance along the Terek river around Malgobek and Mozdok

Timescale covers the 4 years from May 41 to May 45. The former soldier I met fought on the eastern front for 6 years 😮

Yeah I agree, that's why I said; "the German front line barely crossed into the detailed part of the map we have". But I use all the maps to simulate various locations. That is why I suggested that nothing is stopping the OP from using the WWII assets on this map. Although I liked his suggestion for a WWII Caucasus map, it wouldn't change much in terms of the historical battles, because the map we have doesn't cover the Eastern Front.

The Crimea salient saw a lot of WWII combat, including major air engagements from 1941-1944. The siege of  Sevastopol being one of the epic battles there.

Maybe they could detail the already existing map as a WWII environment & create a hybrid of the free Caucasus Map? It is not being used anyway & is about the same size as the Channel map (which is really just an extension of the Normandy Map as well)

Can use the existing I-16 (Russia), Me-109K,FW-190A & D, Ju-88 (German), A-20G & Spitfire (Lend-Lease) I know some of the German stuff is quite late war, but can pretend is earlier models. What are the I-16 owners fighting now, anyway?

Ground units would have to be Lend Lease for Russians, as have no dedicated units yet (e.g. Sherman, Churchill, Trucks, Jeep etc)

I'm quite surprised Eagle Dynamics - a company with Russian roots has not developed more Russian Aircraft or Assets for WWII, or indicated any movement in that direction?

But if they could develop the WWII area with an existing map - could launch a great platform to start an Eastern Front module with more aircraft (AI & Flyable) plus ground assets down the line. I know the purists might moan - but that area of the Caucasus is not used now anyway & could get the best of both worlds. Also will be less work & faster that a totally new map. But new map can also be done further down the line as well.

My 2 cents worth 😀

Only speculating, but I think it may be a perceived lack of interest compared to other fronts, and the fact that IL-2 has soaked up a lot of the eastern front market.

I'd like to see some more Eastern front stuff in DCS. I think with careful selection of AI aircraft and modules, it could be done quite well. The German stuff works on any ETO front, and the USSR used a lot of US/British equipment, used in the ETO as well as the Pacific, so picking AI assets and modules with the most crossover with the other maps we have, should probably be a the main decider of which Eastern front map to do. To keep that efficiency of effort.

Its either that, or ED just doesn't have enough people to do the work. Even the projects they have committed to seem to struggle in terms of assets/planes/maps. I don't know why they can't hire more people, attract more 3rd parties, or try and get what is obviously a very capable and dedicated modder community to get more involved in an official way.

DCS World is quite different from IL2, and I think if your here because your attracted to ED's approach, then it shouldn't matter much what map IL2 has, a DCS World version of it should do well IMO.

The old Lock On and Early DCS had Kerch and Crimean Peninsula Airfields.  The latest DCS Versions took it out

ED has talked the Caucasus has none plan to expand. Meanwhile, krimea and ukrania has a sensible political theme from some years ago and they don't have any plan to redone /added /expand them.

ED removed them becuse of politics. Unless the polticical situation changes we ain't getting them back on a modern map. However as I said before I would love to have a Ukraine/ Southern Russia World War II map, with some early war assets for the I-16 and a late war module and assets that would help fill the Korean era RedFor. Also a Cold war era map would be nice as well. I'm not saying I wouldn't like a modern version I'm just saying we aren't going to get one and I expect ED will close the thread unless you get that through your head.

What is the evidence that ED refuses to release certain terrains due to politics? I've heard this suggested many times before and I have a really hard time believing this is actually true.

Why do you think they removed the Crimea? Stuff in the Crimea disappeared after 2014, they tend to shut down threads over Taiwan that is where people are getting the idea from.

@Tree_Beard ED has no plans for creating a Map of Taiwan.  For several years, many people have stated that pay for.  In turn, ED says, "Nope, not going to happen."  I found forum posts on this topic going back about five years.

As for the Caucasus map, some of ED's employees are or were based in the Ukraine.  ED removed certain parts of the map because of the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

@upyr1 is correct in stating that ED tends to remove threads about Taiwan.

Just because they say there aren't plans to develop the terrain doesn't mean that they aren't doing it for political reasons. Your argument isn't compelling unless you can point me to ED saying otherwise. Happy to be proven wrong if they did.

Don't know, but it could have been for a variety of reasons other than politics.
