I don't recall which version changed it but that is no longer correct. :)

I disagree with the yoga keyboard guy though because I know for the fact that star craft geeks, who were the winners o all the World Cyber Games championships, used keyboard shortcuts with impossible speed, therefore, making themselves the winners.

There is a HUGE difference between using starcraft hotkeys and using DCS shortcuts. With starcraft, your left hand will typicall hover around a specific area of the keyboard (most hotkey plans are geared to the WASD area), where you will use 1 through 5 and below; and almost never in a combination. (Except for some limited Shift/Ctrl action for very specific things, though Shift is mostly used together with the Mouse, not other keyboard keys).

Now compare this to DCS, where there are so many shortcuts it not only has to differentiate between left and right shift, control etcetera, it ALSO has to use TWO of the modifiers at the same time for a lot of things, and this is BEFORE all commands are implemented; even with that regime there's not enough keys on a keyboard!

Sprinting 200+ actions per minute is a piece of cake in Starcraft. (Maintaining it for whole games is harder, but mostly because most of the time you won't have enough to do to merit that kind of action count; what makes a "professional" isn't ability to hammer the keyboards, a professional is made through their ability to trim their plans such that they're always being maximally effective and have zero downtime.) But keyboard in DCS is a wholly different thing. And besides, there's so little in a modern jet cockpit that you actually need to use, you should just map those things to HOTAS (that is the purpose of a HOTAS after all - Hands On Throttle And Stick), and once you've learned how that aircraft works you'll almost never press anything in the pit anyhow, so using keyboard is pointless. Nothing hardcore about it, and it does not help you compared to learning to use the aircraft's HOTAS systems.

(And keyboards vs HOTAS: there is a reason real pilots have HOTAS in their aircraft rather than a keyboard. :) )

Now it makes sense,

I disagree with the yoga keyboard guy though because I know for the fact that star craft geeks, who were the winners o all the World Cyber Games championships, used keyboard shortcuts with impossible speed, therefore, making themselves the winners. My point is that some people love keyboard shortcuts + using them properly will definitely increase your skill, making you a much harder target, compared to using point'n'nclick style. On the other hand, you will love much more to use point'n'click if you don't plan to go for the absolute hardcore, and just want to be a casual pilot. In conclusion, this is a matter of personal choice.

It's got nothing to do with being a hardcore or casual pilot. It's about feeling like you are in cockpit - and with a trackIR + touchscreen it nearly feels like you are touching the actual switches. And it's much cheaper and easier than building full cockpit - although not nearly as impressive.

you can control the "wagon wheel" with the slew control and the HUD. It will lock on a tank as with the MFD. Problem is the angle of the seeker is limited so you need to maneuver quick and stabilize the plane in line with the target, then slew the seeker on target and launch .... not easy, but possible! :D

hmm...cant get this wagon wheel...is there some key command for this stuff!?

select mavericks with HUD as SOI - DMS right /left to switch through weapon profiles. Now you should see a bigger circle with small lines on the 12'3'6'9'o'clock positions, representing the MAV seeker (the "wagon wheel"). If you have the maverick as SOI then, you can slew that like the TGP.

EDIT: The crucial point is to make the MAV SOI, that will bring up the MAV Seeker symbol on the screen. I guess if the CICU is damaged you may n ot be able to control the seeker anymore, so in that case you migth be stuck with bombs rockets and gun...

I was a little misunderstood... I'm trying to launched missile without tgp or missile borsight view (tgp damaged and mfcd damaged - not working!). Is it possible to launched Maverick just from using the hud view!?

Edited that in my last post... do you have both MFDs out? if not you may swap the MFDs with COOLIE HAT down short. If both are out and your CICU is working you may try to make the MAV page SOI with COOLIE HAT right long (if right MFD was showing MAVpage before failure...

Just starting to learn the Warthog and I'm confused about a couple of things...

1) I couldn't contact the tower before the APU was running and the generators operating. Does the APU have to be on in order to contact the tower or did i forget to do something? (Radio doesn't operate on battery alone?)

2) Is the request usually asked before or after the APU was turned on?

If you switch weapon profile to mav ( DMS right/left when HUD on SOI) the mav frame will show on HUD

IIRC, in reality, aircraft are cleared for startup before the pilot even gets in the cockpit.

In the sim, the radios won't operate on battery power alone, and need the APU Generator turned on.

Not entirely true. When i was active duty our planes needed clearance to start or the SPs got really twitchy. During an ORI we had a crew kissing the pavement cause they cranked engines without clearance.

^ So did you need clearance before you started the APU? Or only to start the engines?

Not that it helps contacting the tower but AFAIR the UHF radio works with battery power (don't know if inverter on is required) and only the VHF radios require any generator or ground power. So, using TARS, you could communicate with your flight prior APU start.

I'm not sure if its me or just a game bug... Is anyone else having trouble getting responses from towers sometimes? For example, i contact the tower for startup and taxi clearance without any trouble but when i request permission to takeoff or land i get no response.

At least with earlier versions of sim you only got response and the permission to takeoff from tower if you were located in a certain limited area close to runway (but not yet on the actual runway). I normally stop close to the runway and after that ask for permission to takeoff while turning on the strobe lights and doing the final checks with flaps, pitot etc.

And when you are landing, you have to be within approx. 5 nm from the airport to get the permission to land. Normally tower takes radio contact when you are about 6 miles away from the runway, but you cannot get the permission just yet, you have to fly on until that 5 nm left and then you get the response.

Quick question: Is T/O trim reserved only to setup for takeoff or can it be used to reset the trim whilst in flight?
