the earth's curvature might be the distortion caused by the wide angle view.

You need curvilinear projection for such distortion, however screenshot looks like it is using ordinary rectilinear projection. Rectilinear always keeps straight lines straight even if they are off center (look at the rivets in screenshot).

Yes I would say this is the case, you can still see the curvature in the first pic at only 6300m.

I'd say Georgia.

On the second picture (looking outside the cockpit), at the top (left...ish) there is water - the Black Sea. The snow covered mountain tops that stick out of the clouds must be the Caucasus.

Although ... funny thing is, behind the mountains, over russia, there is suddenly no cloud cover anymore? Small LoD glitch ("WIP")?

edit: while thinking about it, what I saw as water ... might be the same LoD glitch?

Well in real world mountain range can stop clouds and often it's the case, different weather on other sides of mountains ( if you are interesting there is a lot of articles on internet), but yes indeed it can be glitch.

And about the pics; omg colours look so much better than currently! Keep it up ED!

Am I wrong or do I see self shading on the fuselage (missiles) from cockpit view in the second image? That would be so awesome!

yes, self shadowing on aircraft and weapons now works from inside cockpit also

I think the other pics weren't ingame but the terrain viewer.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Yeah,This "Appears" to be a "Working" DCS World in The New Rendering Engine....... Nevada is Near!!!

Failure is the mother of all success.

Anyone else find it strange that these new rendering effects are being used on the "old map", which "will not be compatible" with the new renderer? I am not trying to dismiss anyone's hard work, but what I have been lead to believe is the new map IS the new renderer, and they are the same thing.

A map is a map... Graphics renderer is not a map :)

EDGE is new graphics renderer (directx 11) and Nevada is the new map.

These shots are from existing map running in new graphics renderer.

It looks very nice! I hope those ordinary cloud layer textures will be changed though.... they look very weird.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

Yes but wasn't it said that the Caucases map will not be updated to take advantage of the new renderer?

Slightly confused by the new pics obviously.

A map is not a renderer. The one is data, the other is the way in which that data is processed to come up with a visual representation.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

They ment it will not be updated in the sense of higher resolution...
