EDGE Update

 

I would just like to point out (as one of the resident 'ED haters/antagonists') that I am not surprised ED have overshot their original estimated release date.

 

That being said I think all those of my persuasion (those that think ED are too slow, don't focus on Hi Fi fast air multi roles, get distracted or have otherwise lost there way somehow) should strongly consider this:

 

1) Wags is right, they never promised a pre 2014 release they said they hoped to achieve it, they haven't quite made it (alright that's probably due to the many many reliability issues seen with this year's patches) but that's life. An estimate/goal/hope sometimes slides right with the best of intentions.

 

2) Over the last couple of months ED/Wags has provided us with lots of info on the progress of EDGE and are now providing sensible and mature situation reports. This is to be encouraged not lambasted for 'failure to deliver etc'.

 

3) It shows that ED have been working towards their goal. From Wags post it is fair to assume that work might be completed in Q1, maybe even early Q1. So courage folks, it's coming.

 

ED/Wags have (at least in the last couple of months and regarding EDGE in particular), started to treat the community a little more like grownups - this is good and should be encouraged.

 

So before anyone like me chooses to criticise ED for a perceived 'failure to deliver' please think twice - ED may not treat us with such respect if we flame them.

 

So thanks ED/Wags, I am sure EDGE won't be long now even if it's not in time for the New Year

Anyway, I noticed that the framerate in the vid seemed quite low and choppy around the part where downtown LV is showcased at dusk. What I wonder most about at this point how well it is going to perform in the end. I´m probably gonna build a new PC for it, but it might also be due to Wags hardware specs. Time will tell...

You are right, but I am aware of that (Wags basically said it in his post, and not for the first time). This wasn´t supposed to be any form of criticism. The comparison in fps between this and the other scenes just made me think of that particular point (which is still very much unclear at present). Did not want to spread any panic. :)

Considering how things went at the beginning of this year to get 1.2.3 released It may be well into February or March before we see anything. I hope I am wrong.

 

EDIT: This is not intended as a slam against ED & Staff. I understand there are always snags in a project. We have our own from time to time where I work and I cant stand it! We just have to grin and bear and keep moving to deliver. Thanks for the update Matt and tolerating folks like me. :thumbup:

I have three questions about Edge:

 

- Will the current DCS map work on the Edge engine with all of the other performance and graphical improvements?

 

- Is multicore support being implemented? While SLI/Crossfire is nice, flight sims are more based on the CPU so I feel multicore support is more important. Additionally, everyone has at least a dual core and probably a quad core now. Not nearly as many have multi GPUs, and do not want to deal with the extra price/noise/heat/driver issues associated with them.

 

- Will the Nevada map and other future maps cost us? I am fine with buying aircraft, but I think buying maps, AI units, ect. will break up the community and make it hard to get enough people to populate a server.

I flew DCS for the first time today in over a year and it looks amazing! EDGE looks just stunning so far, I like the direction DCS is headed in, nice job so far guys.

It is understandable, making new engine is power hungry process. But I may point even if some people are angry, they shouldn't be. It is up to ED's own sake to delivery it as soon as possible. As any business company it wants money too. The slower pace of progress, the worse prognosis for the future, costs grow as well. They understand it as well.

So there is nothing left, but just to wish no any BSODs and crashes inside bureau.

If not Edge, maybe MiG-21 will be on x-mas, it'd be goood ^^

I hope for Mig-21 before Christmas! 2 week shutdown and plenty of "me time" hopefully. Also the Su-27 & F-15 AFM to be delivered soon. It could still be a Merry Christmas. :)
