16 August 2013 - DCS News Update

The past week, most of the team has been occupied with:

1- FC3 bugs

2- Supporting UH-1H and Mi-8MTV2

3- Various system changes that span multiple modules

4- Rendering engine

5- Steam and Gamefly launch

Well looks like according to Wags latest post the rendering engine coming soon so then the Nevada Map will follow after 1.26 update...That's a guess!!

Regards

It's in their plan to support multi-core (can't find source anymore but it has been said by an ED dev). But it necessitate deeeeeeeeeeeep re-coding, so long time.

By now, their is one core for sound engine and one core for... all the rest.

I get the feeling that they think the game was developed and released recently (when it was available on steam) and just load it up. Expect Arma 3 graphics. All this crap then just give it a bad review without appreciating the accurate flight model, physics, models, time and effort that went into the game. Then think it's the worst game because it's not pretty & easy. Makes me shake my head...

EDGE Georgia

Just curious... When edge is released, will ED recreate Georgia? I know everyone wants new maps but what appends to existing missions? Will DCS be able to reference both engines for terrain an just "roll back" automatically if I select a Georgia mission?

Also. - has there been any indications whether the new tool will allow the caucuses map to grow? Usually the equation is pretty=smaller.... Will efficiencies allow areas of crimea, azerbaijan, Armenia, turkey and perhaps west Black Sea coast to be included? Nagorno karabakh perhaps?

I did not hunt for the posts but it has been stated more than once that the current map would have to be recreated from scratch to have it use EDGE, therefore it will not happen.

The only information available (of which I'm not sure of the source) says they will not re-create the Caucasus/Georgia map.

My developer mind tells me maintaining separate standards with all the extra work that requires probably makes less business sense than releasing a map like Nevada for free and scrapping the old IG and map. Since I don't want to be stuck in Nevada until they release the next map I have asked about this and got this answer which I hope is correct:

Current map will still be available, just wont benefit from new IG.

If ED is thinking about it, I would vote for a life-extension of the current map and if possible as you suggest a widening of the area as well (Nagorno-karabakh would be interesting). To me, there really isn't a more interesting region in the world than what we already have, especially for the Su-25 which remains my favourite aircraft.

The map will be a paid module with the exception of DCS:A-10C Warthog Beta purchasers, who will get it for free.

Nobody stated this. Wags only said, that it will be free for A-10C Beta owners. But I think that Nevada will be free for everyone to represent new engine capabilities. Imho there is also a posibility, that there will be some other map released with (or soon after) EDGE.

3- Nevada map. This will be compatible with A-10C, Black Shark 2, and FC3. Users that purchased the A-10C beta will get this map for free.

...

For Combined Arms and the Nevada map, a single purchase will allow these add-ons to work with A-10C 1.1.1.0, Black Shark 2, and FC3.

I can't locate the post I was looking for but even this implies that it will cost money.

IMHO, they probably cannot afford to give it away.

Any info about the size of the Nevada map, will it be the whole state...

Would love to do a low-flyby in downtown Las Vegas in a F-18 ;)

Having lived in Las Vegas for a while the strip area would have to be covered because it's only about 10 miles from Nellis.

Question is, how detailed will the strip area be.

And the other question is, will the Nevada map be released in my lifetime?

I believe they said there are no plans to redo Georgia with new tools, so it will run within the new engine, but not take any benefits from it.

i hope they will make and release a terrain converter, so hopefully we will see a nicer georgia, crimean peninsula and afghanistan (on what Batou was working and released for FC2)

maybe not a problem to them if they have the max terrain files but im sure ED can make easily a terrain converter - just similar what we use in modelviewer converting lom files to edm

From Post #1:

Will EDGE/ Nevada cost anything?

EDGE is rendering engine, so no. It has been stated that the plan is still for the Nevada map to be free for users who pre-ordered DCS: A-10C Warthog beta.

EDIT: Needed time to carve this (Post dated 01-22-2011):

To clarify: the Nevada map will NOT be in the release version of A-10C but we do plan to release it later as a pay-for add-on map. This map will be free to those did the A-10C pre-purchase though. For those that wait for the final, release version, the Nevada map will be a separate purchase.

BUT at that time, I don't remember they were already talking about EDGE...

So everything is subject to change ;)
