Frostiken Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Interesting scenario.A-10 vs Mustang guns only,How much damage will the P-51 6-.50 Cals do against the Hardened A-10? .50 cals would tear an A-10 apart. Armor of the a-10 is designed to stop up to 23mm fraid to say the 51 could shoot at it all day and unless it got lucky about all its going to do is provided entertainment to the pilotWhat armor? You mean the titanium tub the pilot sits in? Unless the Mustang decided to shoot upwards at the A-10's nose, there's really no armor anywhere else. The engines are durable and it has many redundant systems which help its survivability, but a .50 cal is going to punch a hole through the wings and will bang around inside the fuselage all the same. Modern aircraft aren't designed to survive enemy weapon fire from above / behind, because it's pretty much impossible to armor against 20mm or 30mm HEI cannons spitting lead at 100 rounds / second, so what's the point of even trying? There's a reason why in Red Flag exercises, having your enemy in your gun pipper is enough to count as a kill, even if just for half a second. The A-10 is no exception. The Ti tub is to protect the pilot from small-arms ground fire, and generally speaking small arms ground fire doesn't come from above. All things considered, the A-10 will be about as durable as any other WW2 aircraft. Hm. What's the top-plate armor on a Shilka? That's actually a good question, I've never seen anything that really rates the M2 against vehicle armor - were aircraft able to employ the cannons against tanks with any effectiveness? Because I doubt the top armor of the Shilka is honestly that much better than the armor of a Panzer III. Did they use armor-piercing .50s in WW2 or were they just full metal jacket? At any rate, I don't think one M2 is going to do much against vehicle armor, but six of them blasting away with modern HEI / API would probably blow it to pieces. But no really, give it a couple AIM-9s, a couple Mk82s or some old Rockeyes :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
MTFDarkEagle Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Can I ask a question? :smilewink: Why is it that sometimes we are able to hear the P-51 supercharger (is that the supercharger?) screaming in a fly-by, such as the one in the first video, and some other times we just hear the engine sound like in the third video at 1 minunte and 40 seconds? 1) Are those two different engines? 2) Does the pilot manually force a higher supercharger gear at low altitude just for the show-off pass? This has always puzzled me. Does anyone have an answer for it? :smartass: It isn't the supercharger. Neither (as many people believe) is it the gun-ports. Some pilots have covered the ports to see if that would silence that sound, and it would not. There now is a company making a simulation P-51D for FSX (A2A Simulations), and they are investigating why the P-51 makes that whining sound. They (and they pilot) suspect it's the oil/radiator cooler (can't remember which one...) which makes the whistling sound. Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
PlainSight Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Very nice and attractive but the Mustang should be in a separate simulator and with at least one competitor at that time. It would be good. :pilotfly: Such "EECH approach" would be the best, at least with WW2 planes, where there's no avionics to model/learn/handle. Cos it doesn't feel fair to pay the same for the useless old bucket as for a complex modern plane. [SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
Nate--IRL-- Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 .......where there's no avionics to model/learn/handle. Less avionics sure - much much more mechanics just to fly the damn thing. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading

REALLY??? :shocking::shocking::shocking::shocking::shocking::shocking: My world was been shattered to pieces!!! Incredible. Never had I though of that. Since the sound very much resembles the gear box whining of high performance racing cars, I thought it was somehow connected with the supercharger gears whining or something like that. Incredible to discover this after so many years. Thank you! :smartass:
cichlidfan Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I'm going to assume that the correctly modeled time period environment will be modeled for the aircraft. I wouldn't assume.;) http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1378073&postcount=161 The plane itself took enough effort - a whole new terrain, not to mention vehicles, AI, etc, would be a serious problem. That's not to say some 3rd party can't do such things. ED already has terrain underdevelopment (Nevada) and other things that they are busy with, as you can see from the announcement, not to mention details you don't know about. GGTharos Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 'Not enough'. A bunch of .50 API's raining down on your armor from above will mess up almost anything. I'll point out that this is close to the size of the A-10's API subcaliber penetrators. Of course the .50's won't be quite as powerful, but a Shilka isn't a T-80, and that pony can put out a LOT of .50. Hm. What's the top-plate armor on a Shilka? Trident Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Soo... Is Steel Beasts is pointless because there is World of Tanks? Nah, but that's a poor comparison IMHO. Nowadays WWII titles in general and P-51 portrayals in particular (including for realism-focused free-flight, see A2A Simulations) are a dime a dozen by flight sim standards, while tank sims, no matter the era, certainly are not. Furthermore Steel Beasts has an appropriate, consistent combat environment which Flying Legends will probably lack for sometime, at least. While I guess the fact that much of the work for the P-51 add-on is recycled from the tech demo means it hardly diverted any resources from other ED projects, I can't help but wonder what the plans are for its future. Will ED follow through and add further WWII units (aircraft, ground vehicles, ships), perhaps even another fly-able and/or a new map? In that case I'd find the argument that there will be no impact on other projects rather dubious and the saying "jack of all trades, master of none" comes to mind (at the very least it would delay further modern-themed modules). Or will the Mustang remain a one-off, a permanent oddity in the DCS world? Fair enough from my point of view, ED never made firm commitments to the contrary, but I dare say it would set them up for a storm of protest from others who assumed that more was in the offing.

Bearitall Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 This must be Chuck Norris grandfather. Enough with the P-51 vs. jet fighters :pilotfly: Could be wrong but I believe a " Tuskegee " pilot shot down the first German Jet during the war..:music_whistling: Taken from " History.com " The Tuskegee airmen once shot down three German jets in a single day. On March 24, 1944, a fleet of P-51 Mustangs led by Colonel Benjamin O. Davis, commander of the Tuskegee airmen, set out on the longest escort mission their crews would fly during World War II. The 43 fighters were there to help B-17 bombers run a gauntlet of over 1,600 miles into the heart of Hitler’s Germany and back. The bombers’ target, a massive Daimler-Benz tank factory in Berlin, was heavily defended by whatever forces the Luftwaffe could muster at that point in the war. The 25 aircraft protecting the plant included the battle-tested Fw 190 radial propeller fighters, the Me 163 “Komet” rocket-powered plane and the much more formidable Me 262, history’s first jetfighter and the forerunner of today’s modern fighters. While the American P-51s typically lagged behind the Me 163s and 262s, they could outmaneuver them at low speeds. The German planes also tended to run out of fuel more quickly than the Tuskegee airmen’s Mustangs. Making the most of their limited advantages, pilots Charles Brantley, Earl Lane and Roscoe Brown all shot down German jets over Berlin that day, earning the all-black 332nd Fighter Group a Distinguished Unit Citation. www.virtualtuskegeeairmen.com

AFAIK .50 is too small for HEI, 20mm is where HEI starts to really make sense. From what i can remember from my basic training, the typical cold war APC (i guess the shilka is in the same armor league) will withstand 12.7mm(.50) from the front, but sides and top are only built to withstand small arms fire(but then i went on to become a field medic, so take it with a grain of salt :)).
