While I agree il2 is now dated and I can see why you call it a game as opposed to a sim there is still more sim in it than War Thunder

IMO the absolute best thing IL-2 ever had were those big online wars. Used to fly the Peshka and the Betonflugzeug in AWF all the frikkin' time back in the day - and I'm sure some of ye mofos must've shot me down "mit Eleganz" a couple times too :D Wish we had something like that in DCS... *sigh*

Well no secret from my above comment I was a 109 fan hehe, but 1 of our fav online maps we used to play here was a P-51 vs FW190 only map (can't remember the exact model).

They were quite different (realisitic who cares) but it was epic online dogfighting.

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

was good enough for my humble self for many many hours of fun for sure.

haha, you've gotta love the IL-2 devs.

Indeed it is true that the flight models were seriously biassed in that game, but it was still a thoroughly enjoyable flight sim :)

My exact sentiments. Would we be in this forum anxiously awaiting the next DCS aircraft if there were not forerunners that brought combat sims to this point? And inevitably there will be very similar discussions when DCS is the old guard (hopefully a long long time from now) and people will say... "bah, DCS didn't even have true 3D photorealistic environments and I couldn't even smell the exhaust from my plane. How unrealistic!" The important thing is that the bar is being set exponentially higher each generation and WE get to experience it.

I remember... and don't laugh too hard at me, when THIS was "mindblowingly awesome"

yeah yeah... IL2 blah blah blah... I just hope I have to buy a new controller so I have to start the plane like this:

I think this is the same D-13 I saw in Washington State....

haha that's awesome. That is sadly where I might have to stop flying. It's one thing to buy a new peripheral, but if I have to get my wife to help crank the engine, I might be in over my head. :)

How did you know? Not quite sure that is what she had in mind.

In an attempt to stay on topic... Is there a plan to include rendered ground crew in DCS or is it too early to worry about such granular things? We talk about immersion and realism a whole lot and the lack of "people" sure does make it feel bit sterile. Just a thought. I know it's probably on the wishlist somewhere already.

Yep it's a insta-buy as soon as it's available for me. That pretty much goes for any WWII bird that's done to the P51 level of fidelity. I don't feel like I have the time these days to learn the likes of the A10c and all the ins and outs of the systems properly but can get up to speed on these older birds quickly enough. I think it'll take about 2-3 years but by then we might have a nicely fleshed out stable of WWII aircraft and a map or two to play on.

We already have a Focke Wulf 190-D9 in development.

We have an F-86 in development, MiG-15, so, eventually we want to cover many different aircraft, many different eras.

Good news indeed, glad to see ED choose to go in pairs of adequate opponents.

Would love to see a DCS-level Beaufighter and/or a Mosquito as well at some point. Well, one can dream :music_whistling:
