TimeKilla Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Just wondering if there's other people out there who just enjoy flying helicopters in DCS, For me I just don't get the same enjoyment flying so high and fast in fighter jet's it just seems you're far removed from the combat. Where in a helicopter you feel more connected flying just seems so much better, every tiny move affects the copter and it's a real challenge to fly. :pilotfly: Is it just me? :helpsmilie: 1 :joystick: YouTube :pilotfly: TimeKilla on Flight Sims over at YouTube.
Kaktus29 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 love the choppers.. just realizing the fact that you are in the air by the power of submitting the air to punishment with your blades is something that is exciting enough.. its such an unnatural way to be in air that i can't get enough of it.. with planes you glide more or less, it makes aerodynamic sense..with helicopters its soo, forced)) like you are waging war on AIR and winning as long as you are in air.. but if blades stop turning you are dead-simple.. the feeling when you hover, think, plan, look at the map, and be close to building while assessing your options is incredible.. very hard to do that in planes where you need to think ahead and act very fast.. but the only thing missing for good chopper sim in dcs is much improved urban environment.. if that happens this thing could rival BF and CoD easy.. but in a much more realistic setup and scenarios and OOB-order of battle.. with buildings that would have damage model realistic and its "get out of here".. i think many people would jump to DCS chopper than planes for seeking blasting the enemy on the ground fun.. for making sure you get to blast anything with a chopper some fighter superiority flying would still be needed, but after that victory in the air, flying a choppa is amazing experience.. as Arnie used to say: "GET TO THE CHOPPAAA!!!" )) 1

Shapper Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Definitely not the only one. I myself and a buddy of mine I know for a fact enjoy simply flying and working on airmanship skills sometimes. You can't go out, blow stuff up, and come back alive unless you know how to fly the machine first. It's always good to sometimes just go out and fly the airplane. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
chromium Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I'm in too :) Author of DSMC, mod to enable scenario persistency and save updated miz file Stable version & site: https://dsmcfordcs.wordpress.com/ Openbeta: https://github.com/Chromium18/DSMC The thing is, helicopters are different from planes. An airplane by it's nature wants to fly, and if not interfered with too strongly by unusual events or by a deliberately incompetent pilot, it will fly. A helicopter does not want to fly. It is maintained in the air by a variety of forces in opposition to each other, and if there is any disturbance in this delicate balance the helicopter stops flying; immediately and disastrously.
ajax Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Yep. Only Ka-50 for me. I just don't have the desire to fly a fixed-wing aircraft. 1
DieHard Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 (edited) For me, I fly the Shark 90% of the time because it is hard for me to remember all the various commands for various aircraft, especially the DCS more advanced ones. I have various profiles made up for the aircraft I do fly for my CH controllers. But I also like the Shark to go after the hidden targets that the fast movers just do not find or do not want to. It is fun to get behind a high-rise building, just creep a hair above it and kill a Tor or similar that are real killers if I creep just a tad too high. Sometimes, a server will have an all helicopter mission. Vortex ring state still gets me if I am not careful. Edited April 15, 2013 by DieHard [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
JHzlwd Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 That would be me. I have the other modules and they are great but once I tried them, went back to Black Shark which holds my interest more. (a) Enjoyed the challenge of learning to fly a helo (it took forever) and the ongoing refinement of skills. There is a very long learning curve which enhances the feeling of accomplishment in mastering this complex and peculiar method of flight. There is always something additional to learn. Fixed-wing is easy and natural by comparison. (b) As suggested, the action is a lot more "in your face". With a helicopter you can stick around to harass the enemy (in fact, there's usually not much choice). There's no BVR and no "drop 2 bombs and run" tactic available. This is not to belittle fixed-wing folks at all. It's just that the helicopter provides a different type of excitement and intricate skill set that hold my interest better - a personal thing. Kaktus29 makes good points ... this is a weird way to fly, whacking the air with brute force like that, and you probably have to be a bit weird - even a masochist - to enjoy that. I sometimes think of the helicopter as "the camel of the air". Like the camel, it is a rather ungainly, ugly and improbable beast, ill-tempered and difficult to control. It is dangerous to everyone, including its master whom it will cheerfully kill if it is not properly disciplined. But, in those situations for which it is designed, nothing else comes close for effectiveness. msalama Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Is it just me?No it bloody well isn't! I mostly fly the Shark, with some Stang piloting thrown in for good measure when I'm feeling sportif :) Used to fly the Hog a lot too, but got bored with the way I operated it, i.e. went up to 20000ft and then busted them up with Mavs and/or GBUs - too sterile and boring! So no wonder I'm itching to get that UH-1H like yesterday, now ;) The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.
BoneDust Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I like a mix of flight activity, but I have to say in real life I much rather fly in a helicopter. I was fixed wing pilot, but always enjoyed a chance to get into a rotary winged bird. Tizid Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I only fly the Hog since i've got the TM HOTAS Warthog. Before i also enjoyed the Black Shark, but when thinking about creating a joystick profile... urghs. Always wanted a FFB-joystick for trimming a chopper the right way. Is the Logitech G940 still buggy and not "holding position" while the chopper is trimmed? Please excuse my bad english.
manne Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Fly only choppers as well. Although I'm now trying to move to fixed wings as well, probably starting either with the DCS World Su-25 or maybe BMS. Not really interested in Warthog. 1
roob Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I like the up-close-and-personal experience with both the enemy and the ground that comes with the Ka-50. I'm waiting eagerly to see if the MiG-21Bis can change my preference, but I'm certain I'll long for the CQB experience after a while yet again. 1 My DCS stream [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Past broadcasts, Highlights Currently too much to do... Gunnergolly Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I have to admit to being a flight sim "Gypsy", i tend to jump between DCS, BMS, XP10 and ROF depending on what aspect of air combat/flying im in the mood for... However i always seem to return to the Black Shark, the mixture of low down combat flying combined with the KA-50s limitations makes the flying interesting. Unfortunately in my opinion the DCS World engine with it's fly through trees for both aircraft and munitions is what let's the Shark pilot down...... hopefully things will improve with Edge. Looking forward to the Huey, i'm hoping that it comes with a good selection of suitable missions... Humbug Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Been flying a lot of A-10c lately, but I fired the Ka-50 up today (my first love in DCS) and I had almost forgotten how fun it is to fly. I was flying really low in a city and popping up from behind buildings in order to kill shilkas and tunguskas before they could get a bead on me. Great fun that. 1
Cowboy10uk Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 At the mo, I do fly all aircraft, however I have a feeling that will all change when I get my hands on the Huey. I will admit that I certainly prefer being down in the weeds in a helicopter. Yep, count me in, nothing like beating the air into submission whilst dodging projectiles through tree lines, gets even more challenging when the fps drop to 5, wouldn't have it any other way ?Find a burning wreck to hover next to & take out all them approaching/stuttering aircraft. Yep, I am a glutton for punishment lol. :joystick:
Yurgon Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 After getting to know the A-10C, I've just gotten back into the Black Shark with the excellent Vergeev campaign. It's incredible how much fun I have flying for almost two hours, not firing a single shot, patrolling the border or searching for a lost ship. I'm sure the Huey is going to be great just as well. Most of all I'm curious how hard it'll be to adjust to the single main rotor and the torque that comes with it. In that regard, the Shark is really easy to fly. :) 1
dave4002000 Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Been flying a lot of A-10c lately, but I fired the Ka-50 up today (my first love in DCS) and I had almost forgotten how fun it is to fly. Same thing happened to me. I've flown the Shark since BS1 was released but it quickly started collecting dust once the A-10 beta came out. I finally upgraded to BS2 during the last sale and haven't touched the A-10 since. I think I actually did forget how much fun the Shark is :D 1 USAF Bomber Avionics Specialist, Ret. Rotorhead Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 I love the sheer power and agility of the fast jets, and sometimes feel the need to fly something supersonic in full DCS quality, but for me, nothing beats the feeling of flying a helo. Not just the combat (at which I suck anyways :music_whistling:), but the flying in general. I'm enjoying every second of flying my beloved Shark, it seemed difficult in the beginning, but now I can fly this armored beast like it was a butterfly. And right now, I'm looking forward to the upcoming challenge of flying the Huey, and all the other helicopters yet to come.:pilotfly: 2
