MiG-29's are especially known for the smoke that their RD-33 powerplants generate. I think that the Wags demonstration video was actually very accurate, the amount of smoke shown in the video is what it normally looks like when in afterburners.

Yep, it looked right for the Russian bird. Just was wondering if that dark smoke was going to be applied to the U.S. moderns, which wouldn't be quite right, but I think I saw a post of Wags a while ago mentioning that the amount of smoke will vary by aircraft and stuff, so I'm sure it'll all be right.

Also a jet does not have to pull any G's to create wingtip contrails, with enough low level moisture they will show up

Yep :) Any new effects are nice and contrails/vapour is an important one imo. I think like all good things it will take a while to get right however.

not yet, (no twirl) but the beta effect in 1.2.6 nicer than the old landing smoke in 1.2.5 and in earlier versions

No question about it. It does look nice. The old effect was terrible...it looked canned and a smoke bitmap appeared with no animation when the wheels touchdown. Now it looks more like new smoke.

btw...anyone with concerns regd wingtip smoke...take a look at this:

first post...see the video. ED did fantastic with the wingtip smoke. It does seem a bit short...but the animation and point of origin is fantastic. Unless ED models atmospheric conditions and a dynamic effects engine to calculate smoke intensity and movement upon turbulence...this is the best we have ever gotten or we can see in any simulation/game yet. *salute* ED. :D

I downloaded the update via the auto updater. Is the new Tochdown smoke already in the game?

I landed the F-15 twice and I didn't see any smoke at all...

IMO The vortices are incorrect they are set to high speed which is not the case in RL

Im sure it will be patched.

Wingtips seem fine for me, I see them at Low and High Speeds with Decent G Load and AoA.

What i wonder is: will ED add the wing / surface vapor effects as well? That's another thing that is hugely missed in DCS...

I agree that more vapor effects need to be added, not too sure about the wingtip vorticies though, they seem to originate at some point below the wingtip, which just looks weird...

Here's what the wingtip vorticies look like in real life.

Yeah I noticed that on the Su-25T, other than that I only have the A-10C and on that they seem to originate at the correct location. Definitely a "bug" or maybe something they haven't finalized yet, 'cause there is no way at all that vortices or any other vapour could appear from under the wings.

Guys, wingtip vortices in real life will differ from one another dramatically, even with the same aircraft. It will vary depending on speed, angle of attack, G load, humidity, altitude, temperature, etc. etc. etc.

Depending on those factors you can have completely different looking vortices on the same type of aircraft. I have seen with my own Mk. 1 eyes wingtip vortices that look exactly like that.

They look fine, but they do need to be edited so they dont render at a downward angle.

BTW, Im not sure, but im pretty sure airliners.net has strict rules regarding posting of their images on other sites.

Does anyone (besides skate- who not coincidentally seems to know the work involved) EVER just appreciate the effort that has been put into ANYTHING?? I saw them for the first time today and after reading about everyone nitpicking I was expecting some awful blob but what I saw on the a10 was remarkable from where I was sitting. You guys think you can do better? There you go. Put a mod in that I can download and see how helpful it is to have people rip it to shreds. Then ask yourself why nobody is dumping edge screens wholesale on the community. Gee. I wonder.

Good grief.

Seriously guys? I'm just seeing some positive and informative posts, at least in the latter part of the thread. I actually find your posts disruptive. Many of us have said these are the best effects ever seen in a sim, is that not enough?

IMO the new wingtip contrails are the most realistic I've seen in any computer game.

I'd say those new effects are about spot on.

I actually think the vortices in the game look spot-on. As long as they make them semi-dynamic and related to altitude, weather, etc. it will be the best in any game I've ever seen. [...] it's pretty darn close, especially considering it's still in beta or whatever.

I agree...the wingtip vortices are the best I have seen in any game. Looks spectacular.

ED did fantastic with the wingtip smoke. It does seem a bit short...but the animation and point of origin is fantastic.

I think that shows quite a decent amount of appreciation, but if the point of origin is wrong i'm sorry but it is wrong, and pointing it out shouldn't offend anyone.

Commenting on something that's not correct is not the same as saying that we dont appreciate the work that's being put into DCS.

And this is what it looks like in game...

Aye I agree. The wingtip trails act as if they had greater density than surrounding air because they sink under the wing plane which looks weird. They should follow the aircrafts direction of motion (i.e. the angle between the trail and wing should be similar to AOA).

Also I think they are too short and requires too many G's to show up. are vapour condensation conditions dynamic or does it have a fixed range of speed and angle of attack to trigger?

They could be moved a little upwards so they follow along the trailing edge, but in all honestly,do you fly around looking at your vortices all day? I'm a little more concerned about maintaining SA and not getting shot down then seeing pretty vapour trails off my wings. :music_whistling:

I agree, they should be longer. I think they use the same trigger as the old ones, which means that they only show up if you pull 6Gs or more.

Vortices in each aircraft are different and depend on wing shape, etc. They are very prominent in F-15 but as you can see in this video

they are are not visible in A-10 in spite of intensive manoeuvring at an air show.

In order to make them appear fully realistically ED would have to implement dew point to the DCS weather system as condensation of vapour largely depends one this and humidity.

As the the position, they may originate slightly below the wing as I have seen many times when landing in a 737. It depends on airflow over the wing but I haven't found anything with A-10 yet.

These are the best effects I've ever seen in PC simulation.
