  3. EDIT: This mod is for DCS A-10C version 1.1.1.1, but it can be manually installed into Black Shark 2 (a Ka-50 cannot call JTAC, but it can listen in) as well. This mod may or may not work with future patches. Sorry for not noting this in the title. I'm finally making good on a something I had said earlier, about adding the UTM zone to all the JTAC communications (both from player to JTAC and from JTAC to player). This mod comes in two minor varieties, see below: Variety 1: Adds a space only after UTM grid zone: Variety 2: Adds a space after UTM grid zone, MGRS digraph, and easting: I'm not sure which is more correct (please give me your thoughts). In addition to having the spaces in the text on the screen, the speaking voice will pause when it hits the space. I was thinking of making the speaking voice say "break" where there are spaces, as I think that is the proper radio procedure (see this link for example), but it started taking too much of my time sound editing. Oh, it was working, the voice would say "break" (in the correct voice too), but it just didn't sound good, and it raised other issues such as perhaps I should add a "break" between each nine-line briefing line? Anyway, the short story is that adding more into this mod was taking up too much time for too little benefit, I think. Anyway, install instructions included below: MANUAL INSTALLATION: 1) Download the one of two the MANUAL varieties (whichever variety you prefer). 2) Unzip 3) In <A-10C main directory>\Sounds\Speech, rename NATO.lua to NATO_original.lua 4) Place the extracted NATO.lua here. 5) Copy the two sound files "delimeter-begin.wav" and "delimeter-continue.wav" and paste them both into the folder <A-10C main directory>\Sounds\Speech\Sound\ENG\Common\JTAC\Alphabet AND into the folder <A-10C main directory>\Sounds\Speech\Sound\ENG\DCS A-10C\Player\Alphabet MODMAN INSTALLATION: Just select which variety you want, download, and install as normal :) MANUAL var 1 JTAC UTM zone mod.zip MANUAL var 2 JTAC UTM zone mod.zip MODMAN var 1 JTAC UTM zone mod.zip MODMAN var 2 JTAC UTM zone mod.zip

  5. I've been experimenting using the Voice Activated Commends (VAC) software to manage my views. The results have been fantastic! Where as I'm not interested in using VA for controlling cockpit functions because it's not realistic, It is very useful to control views and other sim functions by voice, negating the need to take your hands off the HOTAS! I'm finding it particularly useful for bringing up snap views and zooming in on the HUD for strafing runs  Combined with TIR5 and the TM HOTAS and Cougar panels, it has taken the sim to another dimension for me. I hate fumbling around with the keyboard to change views or zoom levels or whatever and this software solves the problem beautifully. With some fiddling it is also easy to map voice functions to the radio comms too. In fact, you can very easily make anything happen via voice. The recognition software has for me been 99% accurate in its recognition, even when I speak very fast and casually. I have done a very small demo video so you can see what I'm on about. I have set up a command to eject at the end which is useful. Also, a open/close canopy command, just for demo purposes. Anyway, you'll get the idea. Ignore the reckless flying... it's all about the voice! Sorry, I have no idea how to embed a video player here! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILZ_4j3f1ps&feature=youtu.be The software is available here http://www.dwvac.com/index.html and has a 30 day trial, so you can try without cost. If you get hooked, I think it only costs $18 for registration. Bargain.

  6. Well I'll be a monkey arse! I swear I have never seen that mixer before. I am new to Windows 7 and didn't even know that there was app-specific settings. Anyway, that did it! Thanks!

  7. If your drivers are working and up to date and your DCS install is really not corrupt. - I have only one guess: Please check your sound control-panel of windows, if each slider is really up. (I post this as you didn't made clear which sliders exactly you are talking about: "All sliders are at 100%" ) Since Windows7 each application has its own volume control. And as the GUI and Sim are technical different applications - it has no meaning if you can hear the button click of the GUI but nothing inside the Sim (as you can see on the screen-shot).

  8. This is true for older chipsets with lower bandwidth. Adding a chip taxed the bus and memory controller and when it recognized another load had been placed (a 2GB or a 8 GB chip has nearly the same load, X amount of channels per chip) it had to compensate by either increase voltage, decrease bus clock or increase the timings of the chip. On THIS chipset the memory controller is designed for it. In order to strain it at all you'd have to task the entire CPU with nothing but memory input/output. And if it's the case that you're running the system on 100% load all day and all night, the added ram will benefit a lot more than it will take away. Won't matter at all outside benchmarks.

  10. I think you're right in the fact that the more ram installed means the bus has to be split x number of times for the increased capacity. I could be way off... Also seem to remember reading a post saying just because the 'reported' speed of the ram is now half what it is on the box, it is still running top speed. Really the only ones that should be concerned about if they are getting that extra 1.0 mhz or 0.5mhz boost, are probably already stressing over the color cable ties they use.

  11. Thanks Tyger! I've learned a lot from your excellent videos - thanks! Weasel, it's really easy to use the VAC for controlling the radio commands. I just haven't got around to setting them all up yet, though I have done a few! The VAC system uses the Microsoft Speech 5.1 technology which is embedded in Win 7 as the core recognition code. The VAC kind of sits on top and handles the mappings but it runs seamlessly in the background without the need for MS Speech to even be running. I am amazed at how well it recognises whole sentences, let alone individual words. It's quite amazing! :clap_2:

  12. There was a good thread on here a few weeks back about this sort of thing. I think the conclusion was that it turns out the AI knows exactly where you are at all times. Even if you are out of sight behind a hill. Which is a disaster as far as realism is concerned.

  13. I can't believe you took that much time out of your life to respond. If you can't afford 30 bucks, get a free one or his free app. The fact that simming, like other hobbies such as RC helicopters/planes, sports, musical instruments cost money. People spend far more money on things that they enjoy because they get enjoyment out of them. To say that $30 is a lot of money is a joke considering in order to run this simulation you need a video card that far exceeds that of a "home office" type environment. You need a joystick at the least. The status of the economy has been proven to have little impact on how Americans spend their hobby money. Doesn't matter if they're broke, they still buy things that make them happy. So his SDK cost him 100 bucks. Say he sells a few hundred licenses. His take home is what 1000 - 2500 bucks? A developer makes anywhere between 40 and 65 bucks an hour and well over 100 on a contract basis? Seems like an appropriate amount of money to me. And to make accusations that he's breaking the law is absurd. Your comments could even be considered slanderous. He's posting on the software developers web forum. You think he would do that if he didn't have permission? Seriously. if you can't afford it don't buy it. But to tell a guy who takes his own time out of his life to create something that works BETTER than the free apps (and most of them aren't free, they require you to buy certain things to make them work) that exist is just plain old Trolling.

And yes it is an open public forum, if you are going to advertise a product on ANOTHER companys product page (basically the same as going on Apples forums and posting "Hey look at this sweet new tablet I just released... only $29.99") , expect some flak. That being said, IF I owned an ipad (never will) I would probably buy this. Since I don't, I am interested in other versions for my specific tablet. Don't like the criticism ? Jog on

    1 point
  21. 1) Before anything else, realize that his post is spam. On any other forum you'd see this locked because I don't see why ED resources should be used to help this guy make a pile of money from people with more money than sense, and it's not like he's even passing money on to ED, despite the fact that the program is completely reliant on ED code. Yes, they made that code for the purposes of exporting information, but to then go ahead and use it to make money almost seems lawsuit-worthy. There's an entire section of the EULA that says that nothing you create for personal use that uses anything provided by the program (in this case, I would say export.lua counts) can be used for commercial gain. But I digress: with that in mind, if you feel compelled to post advertising for an overpriced app, I am well within my rights to respond to advertising. 2) I honestly don't care how much or how little effort it took. All I know is that this app is more or less totally identical to software that already exists for free. The only difference is iPad exclusivity which translates to a captive market. There's nothing illegal about selling software you made, but the problem I see is that the creator(s) of Helios have no problem working on their project for the community for free, this guy wants an exorbitant amount of money for it. That just makes him look bad. If Helios never existed and this was a one-of-a-kind product, I probably wouldn't even be having this conversation because this would be amazing, but it's not. He saw Helios, essentially copied the whole idea, made his own version of it, and is profiting from it. 3) Whether or not I can do something is totally irrelevant. I can't build an airline company from scratch, and neither can you, yet I guarantee you you've complained about fees, lines, unhelpful people, etc. I also don't own my own milk cows, does that mean I can't complain when Tescos hikes the price of milk and then immediately discounts it to the original price and acts like it's a sale? 4) $30 isn't unreasonable? Says who, you? The economies of scale barely even apply in the world of home-grown software. With physical goods, you raise prices on goods that won't sell very much because you need to pay off your overhead before you make a profit, and with small batches that cost gets translated into fewer units equating to a much higher price. For example, military aircraft computers... Honeywell may only sell 200 F-15 ADCPs, so they have to factor in the cost of R&D, testing, tooling, manufacturing, and supporting the product, with all the salaries of everyone involved, and a profit, which is why they cost half a million dollars each. In the case of this, he has $100 overhead for the iOS SDK. That's it. 5) Sense of entitlement? Seriously? First, his product is in direct competition with something that's currently free, so a sense of entitlement (in this case, expecting it to be not-overpriced) is actually justified. Second, it's a PAY-FOR PRODUCT. How do you get a sense of entitlement from something you'd be paying for? Finally, people are asking him to try to make one for Android. Whether or not that's possible is irrelevant, they probably don't know how much work it is, you being a douchebag about it helps nothing. Finally: People who bitch about other people voicing opinions they disagree with, while simultaneously spewing their own garbage out of both ends as if it were the word of god rub me the wrong way....a lot. By the way, understand that if his software utilizes ED's code to function (hooked into their exporting code, which I have reason to believe it is), it may even be illegal to sell it under the language used in the EULA. Frankly, despite what you may think, most of this I don't really care about. This rant is simply me laying everything about this app on the line. I don't care if this really does violate the EULA because I'm not the ones losing out on anything. It's not my job to care, I'm not here to armchair lawyer on behalf of ED, and I'm also not telling him his product is shit and he should feel bad. I *do*, however, care about how similar this is to Helios and how he's basically exploiting the community with an idea he didn't even have on his own. Is that capitalism? Sure it is. Does that mean it's morally just? That it forgives everything? We as gamers get angry when companies do less - with their OWN products - and charge money or exploit their customers... just because this is an individual doesn't mean he should be free from the same criticism. So there it is: I think it's morally wrong to repackage an idea the community created before and not only sell it simply because you can, but to sell it for such a hyper-inflated price is just rubbing salt in the wound.

  25. I doubt that doing an integrity check on \Scripts would be enough. If your goal is to lock players out from being able to make custom edits to the main simulation Lua environment, you'll have to IC a whole ton of folders. Either people will end up disabling the IC or you'll kill the modding community. Perhaps it would be better to overhaul how the integrity checker works? You open up an IC-checked Lua file, add a space, and it fails integrity check. Instead, might there be some way of identifying the dangerous variables and integrity checking them through their values in memory? An interim solution might be to have folks do dual installs, one clean vanilla for joining public servers, and another, "dirty" install for single player and non-dedicated server flying.

  27. Naah, I like the looks of it. The same holds true for the Ju-87 (especially the G-version) and even the IL-2. Those planes are efficient, and the design reminds me of the "lean" concept. All overhead, all things you don't really need: waste. Eliminate waste. First thing: we need a biiiiig gun? Build it in! Second: we need reliable protection and safety. Okay, build it in then! Third: there is no need for high speeds cause we chase slow-moving ground-target. Great, so care less about the streamlined airframe, more space to utilize for the important things ... Another way to put it: the A-10 is the of the airplanes. "The A-10 does not care, the A-10 does not give a sh** .. the A-10 takes what it wants ... the A-10 is pretty bad-ass ... The A-10 has been referred to as the most fearless airplane in the world ..." But "Warthog" is close enough ;)

  29. There is no problem that I can find here other than MGRS just being confusing sometimes. The coordinates given are GH12 coordinates, and in the 37T UTM grid (make sure you take note). For example, 37T GH170284, where your APCs are, is within the 37T GH12 grid square 37T GH 170 284 I highlighted the relavent digits, and added a space between the MGRS digraph, and the easting and northing coordinates (that space is often omitted, but it is important to remember that the numbers in a MGRS grid represent both an x AND y coordinate!). Remember that 37T GH12 is a two digit grid, meaning that the six digit grid representation is this: 37T GH100200 (spaces removed) Do take note that if you were to give these coordinates to someone else as say, a target, you wouldn't want to specify the grid square you were in before you first rounded to the nearest least significant digit (in this case, a two digit grid, that digit is in the tens of kilometers place). To properly give the coordinates of these targets to someone else, you would need to say that they are at 37T GH23, as 170 rounds to 200, and 284 rounds to 300. But these coordinates are within the grid square defined by the limits of 37T GH(1 to 2)(2 to 3), so the first digit of the easting will be 1, and the first digit of the northing will be 2. There's nothing wrong with the in game coordinates or with the mission editor map, it's just that MGRS coordinates can be confusing.

  44. Actually you can auto-kick people in FC2 pretty easily if they don't have a callsign or UCID (that is, people with cracked versions of the game). Turns out these hackers appear to have legitimate versions (that is, they have a UCID - many thanks for the info Case). It is just as easy to then ban by UCID, which is what the 104th have done. For the hackers to get connected again they would either have to go to a cracked game (and get auto-kicked for no UCID) or buy a new license (which I guarantee they will tire of well before the server admins do, provided we keep sharing data to make such bans easy) In FC2 you can find out when new objects appear in game using the export functionality (on the server, even if global exports are disabled - but this requires a customized export script to run the check code). You can then detect when a large number of objects are created in-game and then choose to log/kick. There might be a small performance penalty when you compare the old list of objects to the new list of objects each time, but it shouldn't be too bad. Not volunteering to do this though - besides my pathological hate of Lua (I do it only because sometimes there is no alternative) I also have too much to do at the moment.
