It's not as simple or straightforward as that. This map will most likely be the heaviest most detailed map to date. Add on to that the land needed to bridge that gap, if it was meant to be a playable area at the very least would not be a flat slab, and would not only be 300 miles to the coast (plus ocean) but the width of the the entire map. And the final straw is how many people would utilize this in the long run. Now you say, hey just make it a flat slab of land with 0 detail. Who wants to fly that distance and not have an somewhat decent-looking representation of the terrain, or at night without any city lights, etc? I know some diehards would and that's cool but the greater % of people are not going to want to or be able to commit to that flight time if only to get shot down or crash or what have you over the target. What % of people would fly that distance and does it warrant the development time being added? Now you might come back and say, well hey if you guys do a world map how is that going to work then? How will worldwide distances work? The answer there is it would be different tech, no doubt like some other flight sims and how they generate terrain and objects. There will be a trade off for a world map vs out more detailed area maps. I know I answered more than you asked but I hope this covers most of it. Not every map will make sense for Carrier Ops, in this case, this is one of them. I am not sure you are considering the distance and even if you are you are not considering that most users are not going to be interested in flying those distances for a mission. I get it that some love that sort of thing, but in this case its not possible and we have plenty of maps that carrier ops make total sense. There are many people who would not have been happy with a sacrifice of locations to add a carrier location as well, we have to think of all these things. The three zones are the High detail areas you will see (depending on what you purchase), and the outline is the map boundaries, these will not be high levels.8 points

I totally agree! Mary Air Base is located within the square covered by the future Afghanistan module - why not make a legendary air base?8 points

Haha, it's the mobile anti-ballistic missile system called THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense). It's made for taking out incoming ballistic missiles. The first vehicle is the launcher and the second one is the AN/TPY-2 radar, with a range of 2500 nautical miles. It can also be used in combination with the Patriot system.8 points

I am in FULL support of adding MARY AFB there. Absolutely it was a test base and pilot training base! 100% add however, also i have an OPINION it should be a single solid map. not sub maps and mini maps.. DCS player will buy a single full map (or split half and half) no half loading maps please.7 points

I work for a software company. We rate bugs in a specific order. No work around, and a major functional area being unusable. Affecting a percentage of users - is a P1 (Priority 1). We hotfix. Pull latest release branch. Fix bug and release the hot fix (current release + the fix) why can’t ED have done that? They say they have a fix. Patch it into the latest release.5 points

Hello. I join the request to add the air bases of Mary and Termez - they will open up additional opportunities for gameplay and simulation of USSR combat operations in Afghanistan. Also, Mig-29 fighters were based at these air bases, which will also increase the number of mission scenarios for this aircraft. For example, you can make a campaign about testing the Ka-50 in Afghanistan (transfer the plot of the film “Black Shark” to DСS)5 points

Definitely piston engines in DCS deserve full package, not only smoke but all thing other things. Like transition from primer feed to carb feed during start up, if not properly done may lead to failed start up. Other thing like engine behavior in cold temps like sub 0C or even differences between cold running engine and warmed up engine.4 points

Thank you ED for the opportunity to create fictional scenarios or reenact missions from my own knowledge in the long timespan given with this awesome terrain. Looking forward to get hands on the northern part to recreate some CAS flights i was lucky to observe from the ground (TACP and FAC driver (wheeled) in 2008 near Kunduz/Mazar) @BIGNEWY @NineLine i have to beg you to please forward this request: please please please include more airports out of country. Even if they might only be low qual, i would love to see Termez, Mary, Dushanbe or Quarshi. For myself those dont even have to be very accurately modelled, i just need a strip to start and land on. e.g. Termez was intensily used by Germany as a logistical and personell "hub". A Hercules did transfer myself to Kabul and Kunduz from there. e.g. Dushanbe was used in the evac (NEO then MilEvakOp) from Kabul afaik. When Taliban took back control. Thank you for forwarding to the dev team in advanve! K4 points

Concern =/= proven impact. We don't ask for a low detail terrain. We will settle for no details at all. Flat surface with a basic shoreline will do. We merely want a patch of ocean to place a carrier and cosplay the OEF. Do you remember the early days of the Syria map, with all its performance woes? So how comes the heaviest map in DCS has this 400 (four hundred) miles beyond the detailed area? If all this empty space is such a burden to DCS engine, then why didn't they start optimizing the map by cutting it?4 points

@Minskyyou keep repeating the same thing in different topics. Afg map will be big. expanding in one direction (yes even flat, no fluff, low lod) will expand another direction. For the sake of what? i do love my F-18 and carrier ops (SC) too, but i am old enough to understand limitations. So yes, there will be a map without a coast. How about exploring all those new airports!? Trust the devs. If you dont, dont buy. Simple. Else, start developing your own game maybe. Just sayin, Greetings K3 points

You are correct, I was assuming that my use case would be typical, that's why talking about hundreds of dollars for a storage expansion seemed a bit much on my view.3 points

Just simulate being a carrier-based pilot on exchange duty with a land-based air force. That’s super realistic.3 points

Thanks. Yeah, that's a common issue for me. 99% of the time I can only get my hands on the basic parts of a system, like the radars and the launchers. Often there are issues even finding the different kind of radars also. I would at least want to include an ECS (TFCC). It won't be perfect, but better than nothing. These models aren't from MVR Simulation, I don't even think you can buy models from them. And they seem to be pretty low res.3 points

It all simmers down to whether this "flat slab" will have a noticeable impact on performance and budget or not. Did the team actually run the tests, or it's all concerns and assumptions? Simple logic says that we wouldn't have these extra areas on almost every map in DCS if they were expensive, time consuming and performance heavy. Instead of hundreds of miles covered with mesh and satellite imagery nobody ever begged for, it would have been 50 miles or less, merely to fade out the playable area. Anyway. It's clear that you guys have your mind set, and my arguments won't change much. Maybe one day we'll see a (fairly priced) Afghanistan 2.0 spanning Pakistan and the Arabian Sea.3 points

For air units to be used in Afghanistan, they need to be spawned from their respective airfields in the satellite states of the USSR. At this stage that capability does not exist. The only airport that does not belong in Afghanistan but has an icon on the map provided, is Khorog in Tajikistan. Unfortunately this did not play a role for the USSR as it is barely an airport. Attached photos for reference.3 points

Thank you for your reply. Let me explain why this is a decision that can be improved upon. Apart from the fact that Mary, Turkmenistan was the home of Авиабаза 1521, Мары - Центр боевого применения | Airbase 1521, Mary - Combat Operations Center or else known as Soviet Top Gun, this is the perfect home for the full fidelity MiG-23 and the MiG-29. Additionally, together with the Kokaydy airport in Termez, Uzbekistan, they played a very important role for the Soviet Union's operations in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989 for various aircraft that are available already or are coming soon to DCS World. MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-29, Su-17/22, Su-25, Mi-24, Mi-8. Since you mention "Soviet operations of the 1980s place Afghanistan as one of the most important combat theatres of the past half century." in your product description, it is only reasonable that we have the airports available to historically re-enact those operations and create scenarios that will bring the community together. If you need more information, please do not hesitate to pm me.3 points

Can we have the Tactical Landing Zone at Camp Karwangah/FOB Juno up Hwy 1 NW from Bastion at the foot of the mountains modeled please? Can see on Google Maps at: (31.9869423, 64.0956106) Juno ranges were used by lots of rotary air assets from Bastion for training, and there were ISAF and local ground forces based in the camp using air assets a lot.2 points

I fully Agree With Ronin, not including Mary airbase in an Afghanistan map will be like not including the USS Midway in a Battle of the Midway Mission. Having Mary in the map, will convince many fence sitter Redforce players to buy this map. I urge ED to please consider doing this.2 points

This is what I said recently on Hoggit about this subject, I did double check with Kate to make sure I was on the correct page: Obviously all this is not fleshed out 100% so what I say is only based on what we have said in newsletters and some times Kate (the COO) has shared on DIscord. Current maps would not transfer to a world map, in that you couldn't copy and paste them into it based on the tech that it would use to create that world map. Some of the assets and such may, possibly, be able to be used to speed up the development of areas on a World map you might want to raise the details on but not sure how that will all work. But no, the area maps will not transfer (as we understand it at this time) as well Area maps will still have their place for era-specific maps (such as WWII), etc. All this world map stuff is still very fluid and heavily subject to change, but that is the current understanding right now.2 points

According to this, the M60A3's laser rangefinder has a maximum range of 5000 m (about 2.7 nautical miles). According to this document (approved for public release - see page 3 of the reader for the distribution statement) mentions a maximum effective range of 3000-4000 m for the primary armament, 1200-1800 m for the commander’s .50 cal MG and 900 m for the coaxial MG. (See the tables on 18-20 of the reader). For the T-55, tankograd has an article with an image of the sight (TSh2B-32P), the maximum range is 6000 m (~3.23 nmi) for HEF (ОФ) ammunition, 4000 m for AP (БР, ПОДК) ammunition, 3000 m for HEAT (БК) and 2200 m for the coaxial MG (ГТ). Note that the stadiametric rangefinder only goes out to 2800 m, for a target 2.7 m tall. For the Chieftain, first note that despite what it's called in-game, it most definitely isn't a Mk 3. If ED intended it to be based on the Mk 3, then given that we appear to have a tank that's completed Totem Pole and Sundance upgrades, that would make it a Mk 7/L. That aside, this quotes 10,000 m (~5.4 nmi) range for the Chieftain's laser rangefinder, which is backed up by a Marconi pamphlet on IFCS (though not sure if that's rule 1.16 compliant as it doesn't have a distribution statement). What the maximum effective range is I don't know, though is likely a lot less. The real thing's sight has markings for up to 3200 m (note that the sight used in game appears pre IFCS and has RMG markings despite the tank not having ranging machine gun).2 points

Well we've got a bit of an issue here - apparently the F-15EXs aren't going to be carrying CFTs on a regular basis. https://www.twz.com/no-conformal-fuel-tanks-for-first-f-15ex-operational-units This means almost no air to ground weapons (yay, makes my life easier) and less fuel weight than the F-15E. So I'm considering splitting the EX this into two variants, one with more AG capabilities and one without. They will still use the same model for now, but the AA version will be lighter and have less drag (to simulate flying without CFTs) and the AG version will be essentially what currently exists, but converted to Su-25T avionics to allow for precision AG weapons to be used. Thoughts?2 points

Hi, did you read the FAQ? We do explain why. Thank you *Why Is the Map Available As Individual Sections?* Please understand that this is one map, and you can buy the whole map in exactly the same way as you can with any other map. If you buy DCS: Afghanistan, you will have the whole map in high detail once each region is complete. However, if you do not want the whole map and are only interested in a specific region, you have the option to buy only that region. If you do this, you will still have access to the whole map, but only the region you wanted will be high detail, and the other regions will be low detail. This is ‘Southwest’, ‘East’, and ‘North’. The reasons for offering the split regions are: 1. Allows a lower entry price if users want to fly one region only. 2. Everyone is able to fly the map sooner. The regions of the map are being completed in stages with Southwest ready first, then East, then North. If we waited until the whole map was ready in high detail the Early Access release date would be much later.2 points

Two points. One: the F-104 was initially just wired to carry AIM-9s on the wingtip stations. The Pakistani Air Force completed local modifications enabling AIM-9 carriage on inboard wing pylon stations, which was later adopted by other F-104 operators over time after the bugs were sorted out. In not sure if Spain was one of them. Incidentally, this modification resulted in the PAF F-104s losing out on a chance to shoot down an IAF MiG-21. A malfunction caused the F-104s AIM-9s to fail, resulting in two misfires. While under-belly (catamaran) and under intake fitments were trialed, few operators used them in practice due to excessive drag & deleterious impacts to fuel range + speed. Two, the F-104 was - and probably even now- an effective air superiority fighter. We must step back from the “Top Gun” images of airplanes WVR dancing and look at the statistics. Between 60% and 80% of air combat kills are ambushes- meaning the losing aircraft never even knew they were attacked until they got hit. No turns or “hit the brakes he’ll fly right by” aircraft jiu-jitsu, just a missile /gun pass on a totally unaware victim. People get hung up on E-M WVR chart dogfighting , but that regime is a minority of air combat engagements. When the F-104 was designed in the 50s, BVR was science fiction and infrared missiles were cutting edge tech. Kelly Johnson’s team designed the F-104 to be an air superiority fighter for the 60%-80% when you’d spot the bad guy from high altitude and just drop down to shoot them. As proven by the Operation Featherduster tests in the 1960s, the USAF F-104s were the deadliest fighters in the inventory. They even gave later F-15s fits. Today? With good CGI vectors, an F-104 would be a terrible opponent even for a modern Su-27 /Mig-29. Sure, those jets can do the visual fight jiu-jitsu better. But the F-104 is still hard to see, very fast, and clean has a better climb rate than the Soviet iron. Not that I expect Growling Sidewinder or other YT publishers to act accordingly.2 points
