  7. I don't understand why ED is trying to reverse engineer a multi-billion dollar AMRAAM project instead of creating a reasonably realistic simulation AMRAAM instead... We don't need a full simulation, especially if it doesn't work. Its a nice to have sure, but it needs to work. If something can be made more realistic that's great, but if it causes the missile to be defeated by hilariously simple maneuvers like this, how about we just stick with a reasonably realistic simulation instead. I don't care how much depth the AMRAAM has in the internal code that I can never even read anyway, if it feels real, that's good enough. For example, if ED decided to implement background cosmic ray radiation causing random errors in the sim... I mean.. great, I guess, I can't argue with something being more realistic... but if their code adds a bunch of ridiculous bugs it wasn't worth it.

  9. Here is a google maps link to a selection of fixed site DMPIs I collated. Given the limits of google maps layers, I will create another for mobile positions soon. I have only processed the information into a visible format, The data is based on the 'Command: Modern Operations' database. I cannot take any credit for its creation or verify the accuracy of the data. It is meant purely as a starting point for content creators to have something on which to base their missions. I am also in the process of creating a 1991 .miz template with fixed SAM site positions, which should be ready soon* https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1Mpgn-fTBUxToUqsZMYORpQ_cW4L8gQs&usp=sharing Anyway, hope it is of some use. *(two weeks!).

  12. If you find a safe position out of enemy range, just sit there and expend your missiles. AI knows you are there but will just sit and watch the HOT hit it in the face. Unless the mission designer scripted something, dcs AI is not really reactive. It just waits, and if you go within range, it will shoot. Relocating just means you are risking to go in range of something you didn't know it's there. Relocate only if you need to fix LOS problem or something like that. Not being stationary probably helps a bit in some cases, but zu-23 or even infantry with AK is as accurate as shilka, so if you go within dcs defined range, they will snipe you out with first or second birst despite if you are moving or not. So, in DCS, the most effective way is to hover out of range and shoot the sitting ducks. Sent from my SM-G985F using Tapatalk

  16. So I know I'm fishing right now, but especially with the release of Afghanistan and Iraq, is there possibly some more F-14 campaign(s) in the works further down the line? The three you have is my favorite sim content by far and I can't get enough. Thanks for all you do for the community Greg! Cheers!

  17. I don't have the F-4, so the only things I notice: The box in top right say accelerate to 350 kts, but you speed past that about 10 seconds after take off. That turn looked kinda lazy to me, maybe a 60° bank turn with the reduced speed will have you in better position? Or maybe the triggers are looking for the stuff in the box in that order: gear and flaps, then pitch angle, then 350 kts. But you fly: gear and flaps, 350 kts, then pitch angle and it breaks the mission?

  19. I honestly don't understand the tone of this response. This person claims to be a German Air Force member currently working in Iraq, and has provided an earnest and relevant appraisal of the recently released DCS Iraq map. Your response comes across as inordinately pithy and adds no real value to the discussion, and I'd encourage you to reflect on the purpose for writing it. This community thrives when we allow room for robust discussion and while rebuttal and counter commentary is important, it seems awfulyl apparent to me that this response falls far short of that. That aside, as someone else who has spent a significant part of his working life in Iraq, I am absolutely thrilled at the quality of this map, and feel that Ed has done a wonderful job in putting this together. It's hard to read the constant online criticism of DCS at times, but looking at how far this community has evolved from the early days until now is marvelous! It's getting to the point where I'd even welcome some non-combat fixed and rotary wing assets to simply enjoy the views flying around parts of the world that are so well modelled, but that we have so much variety in this sandbox is fantastic. Great work Ed! Looking forward to the future of DCS.

  20. This isn't really a bug, but could use improvement none the less: there are no units listed for QNH, temperature, or cloud base. It's easy to confuse mmHG for hPA (problematic for Spitfire, Viggen, and M2000 pilots).

  21. A flight sim should still be fun to play. It's not a full-fidelity life simulator. It's a flight simulator. If you want to be realistic about battle damage repair, the timer should be 170 days not seconds. Hence, re-spawn and fly again. Just fly the sim, folks.

  22. Some more recent demonstrations here. Downgraded back to 2.9.9.2474@release, so this is before the filtering values were changed. Manually edited aim120_family.lua to set the proximity fuze to 15 meters instead of the default 9 meters. Taking two random tracks from this thread, the missile now explodes and destroys the target instead of flying past. Of course, there will still be situations where the missile will miss by more than 15m from any part of the aircraft, so this is obviously not a flawless solution. This just illustrates how much a changed proximity fuze can help in these sorts of situations.

  24. Just finished the campaign and gotta admit I really liked it. Like the C-101 in general, it really teaches you stuff and enforces good airmanship (the IFR navigation in mission 1 was already discussed in this thread, but also the combat missions later on when you are just given a VOR radial, DME distance and intel picture of your target - at first they seem daunting, but then you realize its really all you need to find any AO ). Mission 10 especially is brutal (but from the briefing and voice comms its also made clear that it is supposed to be like that). I lost all my wingmen at the first engage because they are immediately shot down by the AAA trying to do traditional dive attacks (poor guys, think they are supposed to be the fighter pilots I trained before , but then again I know the AI problems are in the game engine and can't really be affected by mission makers). The most effective way to take out the 4x AAA seemed to sneak up through the valley at ground level, short pop-up, taking out a single AAA, then back to ground level maneuvering left/right to (hopefully) evade the fire of the remaining AAAs that at this point have turned towards you. Even then I had to fly back to base and rearm once, since your rockets and gun seem to require multiple 100% on target hits to fully destroy them. (or maybe my aim just is that bad...) So in general a wonderful campaign that really tingles the "I feel like a better pilot now" feeling when you succeed. Everything seems to still work as of late 2024, its mainly the last mission that might seem disproportionately hard - but as I wrote even that might be by design to force you to get creative.

  25. Should we expect the frequencies for ATC at existing airfields to potentially change again? If they do, would you please be kind to enough to advise which do change, such that I can update my kneeboards, without checking every airfield.

  27. Hi, Of course everything worked fine when I submitted the update. At the moment it seems that there is a problem with the director in missions 5 and 7. I have already submitted a patch fixing the issue and hoping the logic won't change again before the next update

  28. Nice! Will the roadbase be included? Also will the big Apron at Jokkmokk be removed as its not accurate?
    2 points
  29. Yes, but it depends, a few updates ago the ground units got an update and depending on the status even the FOV in which the units can scout varies. So if you shoot, you give away your position, if you dive down again and disappear from the LOS and reappear at another position, the units should not shoot at you.

  31. Flying the KA-50 through the rain brought to mind a story a Russian friend of mine once told me. It took place back in the Soviet Union during the 1980s. He was standing on a balcony in Moscow when the weather turned, and raindrops began to fall. Whenever visitors from abroad witnessed what happened next, it always intrigued them: everyone would pull over, stop their cars, open their glove boxes, and take out their windshield wiper inserts. Right there in the pouring rain, they’d quickly attach the blades, jump back into the car, and continue on their way. Once they reached their destinations, they would remove the wipers and stow them away again. This strange ritual was all because hooligans would steal the wiper blades and then try to sell them. Anyway, is ED so committed to realism that the wiper blades on the KA-50 have been swiped by neighborhood kids, or have you simply forgotten to implement them? I’ve tried turning them on, but they seem about as effective as a condom salesman at a monastery. I’ve seen the capitalist pigs in their 64-Ds repel bad weather, with their wipers and this just doesn’t seem fair. With the recent weather patch, everyone seems to have fallen in love with rain, which makes flying the KA-50 quite challenging and unenjoyable Please, consider making these wipers actually wipe

  32. This was my second flight through the map, although the plan was to make a video of the first one in order to get the most genuine curiosity driven reactions/movements, while not skipping interesting details with 'because I've seen it before I'll just ignore' kind of deal. Reason being: OBS has reset the video inputs after unplugging monitors for room cleaning meaning the first flight recording was a flat black screen. ....still, on the second flight, the awe was just as powerful as the first one. It is rough on the edges, but imo, ED has crafted a very important gem for flight simulation here. Just by comparing PG's Iran with Iran on this map, you can see a severe difference in the portrait of vegetation in mountains and mountains themselves, and Iran is not inside the high detailed area as you can see several town villages missing all of its buildings in the area. One big concern I have with the map is the performance over areas with buildings. It pulls too much on GPUs compared to other maps and no LOD setting changes things. Even on small villages compared to massive cities in maps such as Syria. I hope for performance/optimizations patches for it. At the moment, I cannot imagine dense fights over and inside Baghdad let alone inside a F-4E. Images bellow from Baghdad and mostly Iraq-Iran border. Note: Vis Range is set to 'Ultra' in my settings. 1 notch bellow Extreme.

  33. Ok. I think some of the issues inter-relate.The high speed makes your turn radii very large. Which generates the need for aggressive bank angles. Also at such high speeds navigation gets compressed and things happen fast. If you stick to the 350kts max , it has several advantages: Everything happens slightly slower, so less stress or pressure regarding navigation. Your turn radius isn’t that large , so you don’t need to be that aggressive in regards to turn bank angle and g-load. 45 degree bank should be enough with a smooth pull. There is a rule of thumb for the bank angle required to fly a standard IFR rate one turn: (TAS /10)+7 = required degrees of bank angle. At low altitudes and standard temperatures your TAS isn’t very different from your IAS, At 5000ft alt and IAS 350 your TAS is somewhere around 380 , depending on Temperature, so 380/10 = 38 . 38+7 = 45 , so 45 degree bank should do nicely.

  35. Also at about the 3:00 point in your video you are flying straight through the tacan radial that you were supposed to intercept and instead you keep flying straight ahead further and further off-course. When the HSI needle approaches the Center of the HSI you should turn left (take heading 089 for starters and adjust from there ) and fly outbound on that radial 089 (so keep the needle centered) . I don’t understand why you are changing the HSI course again afterwards, you shouldn’t do that.Recommend you re-read Zabuzards post and watch the IFR training video he posted again. He explained it pretty well. Dont take this the wrong way, but I think you haven’t fully understood the basic IFR navigation concept yet.

  36. Same for the Tomcat. It's the "secondary shadows" option that works with night deck lighting - the quality is very low.

  38. Would be great to see a resolution for this, especially with an easy way to move the indicators (within the settings GUI, etc.), or at the very least having edits to the corresponding luas to make the indicators visible on multi-monitor setups not break integrity check.

  39. It is frankly a terrible implementation and looked far better before this change. I now have to avoid any missions with rain on the carrier or use the outside view to navigate around the deck, can't even see the new plane directors signals clearly and it is not even raining hard.

  41. After a while, probably the first time after a few patches I got into an A2A mission, training mission. There was an Il-76 5 km ahead of me, and I had serious troubles to find it in the sights with zoom. It was partially a color/lighting thing, but I can't believe in real life I'd not see such a big thing when I looked at it directly. No simulator will ever be 100% realistic in this matter - the only question is how well it translates the reality to a screen (in my case 1440p). 2D screen is especially challenging as there is no stereoscopy, so if the colors blend, we're screwed. Of course, VR has its own set of challenges, there is a resolution-vs-visibility discussion for monitors, etc. It's not an easy problem. It is a matter of practice as well, especially when it comes to "spot" a moving dot. But when there is no dot to see, no shimmer, no movement, nothing, not even when you look straight at it, it's objectively not good.

  42. I don't think it's gonna take that long, but yea, it's not that fun to fly with the current model. It's got to be one of the hardest parts of every module to tune this. Change one value and it breaks some other thing kinda deal. Hopefully they'll fix this soon, the Apache is almost perfect otherwise.

  44. Ah silence. Maybe there's one last update planned before the end of the year, but it seems we're going to be getting another "it'll come out this year" that will prove to be untrue. I sincerely hope they prove me wrong.
    2 points
  45. Correct. It’s a long time since knowing this was part of my job, but a typical jet engine will produce 1,5-5 percent of max thrust when in idle. Keep in mind this is of stationary ground trust, which is lower than max in air. Small jets with powerful early generation engines was susceptible to this. A Lighting pilot once told me he reached 60 in idle - though he wasn’t sober at the time. In DCS my tomcat B needs brakes when taxiing to keep the speed down, even in idle. I’ve got no idea if this is correct or not, but generally I don’t really see an issue. The game is for flying, not WRC.
