  1. "...As seen in Jet Pilot with John Wayne)" Damn, that was a bad picture! Lol!! Terrific flying scenes with those Sabres, though. Only reason to watch it.
  2. I'm actually on the fence as to whether or not I'll buy the Jug. I've always liked the airplane but I've also always sucked in it. I mean, BAD. I've been flying combat flight sims on computers since the early nineties, and in every one that had a P-47, I could not do a thing with that airplane. I find myself wondering if I'll spend money on this and wind up not flying it out of frustration. Air to ground is fine...I mean, anyone can drop a bomb. But A/A combat, fuggedaboudit! I'll wait and see what you guys think of it before I jump in.
  3. Yeah, I'm just going from memory, too. The books been out of my collection for a few years. Need to pick up another copy. But, it just doesn't sound like Gabby.
  4. "If I remember correctly the pilot ran out of ammo and was trying to ram the 109" Doesn't sound like something Gabresky would have done. He didn't get to be one of the highest scoring U.S pilots in the ETO, and survive the war, by doing anything as stupid as that. However, for a short time a group of Polish pilots were transferred to the 56th. Gabby knew most of them. As a matter of fact Johnson tells a funny story about one of them. While on a mission, the unit was ordered to drop it's tanks. One of the Poles forgot to switch over to his main tanks and the engine hesitated from lack of fuel. Everyone heard him call out, desperately over the radio, "Gabby, Gabby! My motor...she go, poof, poof! Vot I do, Vot I do!!" It was probably one of those Poles.
  5. Enjoyed that little film. But, those looked like Mossies flying over the airfield near the end. I kept replaying it because I thought, "Well, that can't be." But yes, those are Mosquitos.
  6. Don't forget that the Zero was designed to be a carrier borne fighter. Carrier aircraft tended to have thicker airfoils because they aid in lift. You need a wing with good lift capabilities to get off of small airfields and carrier decks. Check out the thickness of the wing on the F6F Hellcat. It got off of the deck quickly and was very docile when coming aboard. The thickness cut down on the airplanes speed but made it a great ship borne airplane. Pilots just loved it.
  7. I can't believe that you are seriously asking such a rediculous question. How can you buy an airplane that you already have purchased. When you see the red text for the campaigns, it is simply warning people that they need to own the P-51 before they buy that campaign. Just to make sure that someone doesn't purchase the campaign thinking that they get the Mustang with it.
  8. "I'm still level one." Lol....spoken like a true gamer! You're a fighter pilot now, boy. You aren't level one. You're a rookie, a F*#%ing new guy! Now keep that up and maybe the C.O. will move you out of that tail end charlie position and give you your own wingman.
  9. "That is not correct. A6M was not draggy at all if you compare it to any other design with radial engine...." Yes, the Zero is not draggy at all. I, also, have to disagree with this statement. One of the reasons that the Zeke could get as much speed out of it's fairly low horsepower engine was it's low drag. Now, if you want to talk about a draggy airplane, lets talk the BF 109. Bulges everywhere. The late war 109's looked as though they had tumors.
  10. I haven't been part of a squad since the late nineties when I was part of a group that flew Janes WW2 Fighters. I'm tempted. I'm in Florida, so time differences may be an issue. When do you think you guys will fly? Evenings, I would think. Right?
  11. I can hear the RAF fitters now. Shaking their heads and saying, "Damn bloody Yanks!"
  12. I have yet to join an on line game in DCS. But this might make me do it. I'll go and fuel up the '86.
  13. As an aging ex WAAF said in an interview for that fantastic documentary on the Spit..."She was a lady in the air, but a bitch on the ground!"
  14. Wow. What a pain in the ass flight simmers must be to have to deal with. I couldn't do it. I'd be telling people to go F themselves! So, you're not going to buy an airplane because you have to hold a button down too long. Don't ever buy an F4F Wildcat if they make one. You had to crank the landing gear handle 32 times to get the gear up. Horrors! The planes are either not realistic enough....or they're too realistic. Yeah, I'd be telling people to go F themselves for sure.
  15. Did you just refer to Kermit Weeks as "a guy?" Holy smokes...Weeks is more than just some guy. He owns one of the most impressive airplanes collections in the world. I live an hour away from his "Fantasy of Flight" museum. Google his name and you'll see some of the other airplanes he owns.
  16. After purchasing the AV8B I kept wondering if I should have bought the F-16. I've always loved that airplane, but that Harrier looked good ,too. And it was something a little different. So, Harrier it was. But I grabbed that , free for a month, F-16 last night. Nah...I made the right decision. I flew it around, dropped some bombs, and started getting bored of it pretty fast. Don't know why. Maybe it's because it's so similar to doing it in the A-10C, which I still enjoy flying. But the Harriers VTOL possiblilities adds a whole new dimension to the mission. Especially trying to get it aboard the ship....which I have not mastered. So, happy Harrier owner , here. Just thought I'd tell 'ya!
  17. Well, I've never seen that before! I tried to watch the video, and it took me to a page that said, "Unless you have a time machine, you cannot watch this video." So I didn't watch it because...well..I don't have a time machine. Not right now, anyway. It's in the shop.
  18. I always read this kind of thing and wonder why people have a hard time running this when I'm playing it beautufully on a seven year old AZUS laptop. Do you all turn off your background programs? I use ENDITALL for this. I also run CCleaner. I find that these two apps two of the best ways to keep your games running smoothly. My laptop only has a 2 GB video card. An 860m. I don't run with everything on low, either. MSAA is on 2. I have shadows on. Mirrors on is one thing that really affects the framerates. I DO turn those off. If I'm running this as smoothly as I am on my AZUS, I can't understand why you guys with more powerful rigs are having problems. Turning the vehicles on max might be an issue, though. Does it have to be on max? But framerates dropping when you are simply alone flying in free flight shouldn't be happening. I don't know what kind of machine you're running this on, but it has to be better than mine.
  19. "It should be. I think it was a standard feature from D-28." The ability to connect the Throttle, supercharger and prop control was available beginning with the C model. From the P-47 handbook: "On P-47C and subsequent models, the throttle, supercharger and propeller controls are made so that they can be pushed forward by use of the throttle alone. When properly adjusted, this position should give about 52 inches Hg and 2700 rpm at altitudes up to 25,000 feet. It may be necessary to push past the stop to obtain full power above 25,000 feet. When controls are connected, the supercharger control will come back as the throttle is retarded, but the propeller control will remain at the farthest position. Rpm must be reduced by pulling the propeller control back."
  20. Everything is free for a month!? Am I understanding that correctly?
  21. It's there, all right. I jumped in to my Spit and nailed one. But it was awful. I need some practice attacking bombers. I kept damaging him, but overshooting, and the gunner put plenty of holes in my right wing. When I landed I found that he had put some in my fuselage, too, just behind the cockpit. Don't know why you aren't seeing it. Are you sure your game updated? The A-20 is there, too.
  22. I am VERY much looking forward to flying that F4U from Pacific Island airfields. The only thing that could be better would be having a P-38. But it's not gonna happen, so I'll take what I can get.
  23. " Like how you have to open the oil radiator on the P51D manually to stop it from overheating. Or how your engine instantly stops without warning when flying on a cruise setting in the P51D. Or how the pilot dies when you do a gear up landing for no apparent reason." My overheating problems with the Mustang stopped a long time ago when I learned how to properly manage the engine. I have never had the engine simply quit for no reason at cruise setting. I have never been killed because I did a gear up landing (not that I've done very many.). At least not that I remember. The Mustang gives me no problems whatsoever.
  24. And here is a problem that has been going on since there have been flight simulators. Everybody screams that they want realism....until the realism isn't working out for them.I'm picturing Goering picking up the phone and calling Doolittle... "Hey, Jimmy, I don't like the way your Mustangs are outflying my D model Focke Wulfs. You need to do something about that..talk to your pilots, it's not fair!" Doolittle listens patiently and finally says, "Listen Hermann, we've talked about this before. My boys are gonna keep on doing just what they're doing. You need to teach your pilots some better tactics. Now, I'm busy planning tomorrows bombing of Berlin. Try and see if you can arrange for Adolf to be there, okay? Now, don't bother me about this again! Bye!" Hangs up the phone.
  25. How about we lighten up and stop worrying about time frames? I'm not even going to worry about the fact that it's the Marianas. I'll fly my Corsair out of there and it'll be the Solomons in 1943. I'll fly my Mustang and it'll be the Phillipines in 1945. I do that with the Caucuses map. I dress my Mustang or Spit in Med paintschemes and it's Italy. I paint them in the colors of the 506th Group and it's Japan. "But it's the Caucuses...you can't do that? That's stupid!?" Oh please. It's a game. Do what the hell you want with it.
