  1. I have used DCS with a 4k monitor for a while and have moved on to VR (Oculus Rift) since. The VR experience is far superior to anything you get in terms of resolutions from a 4k screen, in my opinion.
  2. I wonder if existing missions and campaigns will work on the new map...
  3. I'll definitely give it a shot again, but it I tried most of what you said. Is the Oculus Rift microphone considered suitable? That's the only one I tried as that's the most practical solution. I did the windows voice training at least ten times, but voice attack only recognized gibberish. I tried to use it with VAICOM by the way.
  4. I just had to wait for a replacement Rift the last week and I couldn't bring myself to fly without it in that time. It just isn't the same anymore. I'm glad you enjoyed it here. I take it you were in Hamburg before the G20 chaos :D
  5. Radio menu commands are also selectable with the mouse. You don't need the F keys at all. I really have to try voice attack again though. I got frustrated with the program not recognizing my commands.
  6. The Oculus Rift is actually hugely discounted right now: https://www.oculus.com/blog/rift-touch-399-for-a-limited-time-summer-of-rifts-best-deal-yet/ As for my experience... The Rift is 100% useable for DCS in my experience. I mean that in the most positive way. The biggest concern that I had with VR before I bought the Rift, is that the resolution is so much lower than the 4k screen I got used to. Yes, it's a significant drop in clarity, but with a pixel density of 1.7+ the dials are all readable and the feeling of sitting in the cockpit in 3d trumps any advantage in clarity that I had with the monitor. It's the only way I experience DCS now. It's what TrackIR first did for me 15 years ago.
  7. I don't think what you say about the eye muscles not working in VR is true at all. Since you're forced to focus on different distances in the virtual environment, it should be pretty much the same as in real life.
  8. https://support.oculus.com/help/oculus/1357437467617798/ A 1070 might get you passable performance in DCS, though your CPU and ram might pose a bottleneck. Keep in mind that even people with a 1080ti are having VR performance issues.
  9. No demand for a hi-fi MiG-29? I bet it would sell like hotcakes!
  10. On the issue of nose wheel steering.... I was thinking just the other day, is the behaviour realistic? If you go full right rudder, and then press the nose wheel steering button, the plane will go hard right almost instantaneously. Does the wheel really turn that quickly?
  11. I haven't been following the development of these new high end flight sticks very much. Why are the VPC and the planned VKB grips so similar?
  12. I've been using the Warthog in its default configuration for the A-10C, but recently I've been playing around with target to program the buttons for other modules. I've come across a weird behavior with the APDIS (autopilot engage / disengage button) on the throttle base. The button registers as pushed constantly and pushing the button ceases the action. This means, that if I want to assign a "hold" function to the button, such as for jettisoning stores, the button is constantly pressed and only "unpressed" when I physically push the button. This surely can't be normal behaviour, can it?
  13. I'm also in contact with Oculus support right now. I had a very similar issue where the Rift would disconnect for brief moments. This is a killer in DCS, since the program won't redetect the Rift, forcing you to close it. Yesterday the Rift had it's last disconnect. After I opened the ticket support answered within half an hour. We then shot some emails back and forth every ten minutes doing basic troubleshooting, most of which I had already tried of course. I sent them screenshots of the errors I'm receiving and they instructed me to extract the log file. This morning I got an email asking me to send them all the serial numbers and purchase information. They have acted extremely quickly so far. Everything's pointing to an exchange right now.
  14. What won't work? There's absolutely no problem with using keys bought on steam with the stand-alone install. EDIT: Seems I'm wrong http://steamcommunity.com/app/223750/discussions/0/2741975115067023612/
  15. First of all, no one here is calling for the MiG-21 to be the same as the Su-27. People are calling for real world avionics upgrades that have been performed on real MiG-21s. Apart from that, the Su-27 is an FC3 module. DCS lacks a high fidelity Russian fighter.
  16. If this really works (and I'm skeptical), then this would obviously be amazing!
  17. I think they need a contrast slider in addition to the gamma... To get something that looks acceptable outside of the cockpit you get black shadows in and outside of the cockpit. The main problem is the huge contrast between light and dark areas. Seeing the HUD against the horizon is also of prime importance. Yes, haze on the horizon looks white in real life, but it's not pure white, more of a light blue grey.
  18. Wow, the detail is incredible! Doesn't this kind of detail hit performance though? It's a level of detail we're never going to be able to appreciate from the cockpit. Don't get me wrong, this is awesome, but DCS doesn't exactly have fps to spare, right?
  19. Every module seems difficult to learn at first. You load up a quick mission, sit in the cockpit and think "what the hell do all these buttons do???". The MiG-21 overwhelmed me at first... Just too many switches that look exactly the same. Took me a year owning the module to force myself to learn it. Turns out it's a really simple aircraft. Same with the F-5E... When I finally took the time I found that it's an embarrassingly simple aircraft. For the same reason, I still haven't put a lot of time into the Viggen. The point is, all aircraft seem daunting at first. But put a couple of hours into learning the systems and it becomes second nature. It's not difficult, it just takes a bit of effort.
  20. Haha, just imagine entering 25gb worth of code manually...
  21. Here are some concise answers to your questions: 1) Is it best to run the game independently or via Steam? Definitely run the game independently. It's ok to buy a module on Steam if it's cheaper there. You can use it in the independent install. It will save you a lot of hassle. 2) Are there WW2 servers out there that don’t require the Normandy 1944 map + WW2 assets pack? Most of these will be moving away from the free Caucasus terrain, now that Normandy is out. I don't expect you will see many players there. Normandy will be the way to go if you like flying WW2 aircraft. WW2 servers are quite popular so you shouldn't have a problem finding one that is populated (eg. Burning Skies) 3) Are the DLC's via DCS ever on sale? If so is this frequent and what kind of discounts are thrown about? What’s the best way to find out about these offers if they exist? Yes, sales come along quite frequently. You'll know about them if you're signed up to the DCS newsletter. Generally discounts are up to around 20%. 4) Dare I say it but are there other P51 combat misson options available if DCS doesn’t work out? (I don’t want this question to read disrespectfully as I appreciate this is a DCS forum. Just looking for some honest feedback from other sim players) There is a DLC campaign called "High Stakes" which is in the Caucasus map. Expect much more mission content to emerge with Normandy. My advice: Invest in Normandy to have the full experience.
  22. Apparently the RAZBAM Harrier has been fasttracked to be shown at E3. Seeing as the Harrier and the Hornet have almost the same stick, and that they're showing it at the Thrustmaster booth, it seems an F/A-18 stick is more than likely.
  23. Nevada is a great map for many realistic scenarios involving training US aircraft. It certainly has its place.
  24. You'll buy a new PC? With all due respect, your PC is almost the best you can get in performance. Not much a new PC will achieve.
  25. I mean force feedback checkbox under the MISC. tab in the settings.
