Lighthouse for VR and Flight Sims
hansangb replied to Wdigman's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Bobaz, not to worry. You get used to it pretty quickly. Because I started out at DK1 (to DK2, to CV1) I didn't know why people were saying "it's like looking out of a diver's mask" Then I bought P5K+ and said...Ohhhhhh, that's a much nicer FoV. When I went back to CV1, it was EXACTLY like looking out of a scuba mask. But, after jumping ship to Reverb for better clarity, I don't even notice it anymore. You just get used to it. Pimax 8K++ is supposed to address both. Better FoV and clarity that rivals or is better than Reverb. But again, the software (pitools) was a concern for me. So I'll stick with my Reverb and G2 on pre-order. -
I would also recommend Bunyap's YouTube channel. The first few are A10A but still good. The rest are A10C. HIGHLY recommended

Look mummy, there's an aero plane up in the sky
hansangb replied to GuardDog's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Mover (ex F16 and F18 aviator) mentioned in combat it's lights out. Which makes all the sense in the world. In formation flying you leave them on. Or turn on other lights as needed. -
[FIXED] HUD: A picture is worth a thousand words?
hansangb replied to randomTOTEN's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I think the point is that real A10 drivers at Davis Monthan OK'ed the change. So they must think it's OK. That's how I read it. Of course, those guys all use VR so they can just move the head around like in real life. Maye that's the difference? -
But we would. Devs who could be working on Kiowa, Cobra, F16 etc would have to work on updating FC3 planes which were never meant to be full fidelity. My guess is that ED would be much more successful launching Kiowa's of the world than updating A10A. Especially with A10C and II coming out soon. A10A probably wouldn't move the needle for ED.

But every "new toy" comes with the same comments. Only the people who have problems shout so it skews the perception. You probably need a longer duration to see what the true MTBF is.

Lighthouse for VR and Flight Sims
hansangb replied to Wdigman's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
It's HMD dependent. Pimax *requires* lighthouse. But if you're doing flight/car sim, one lighthouse is adequate. I ran P5K+ using the original lighthouse (picked it up from Ebay). Speaking of which, they never did send out my KS package of two controllers and two lighthouses. Hmmm. But WMR based headsets do not require light house. It has cameras in the HMD and tracks movement using the built in cameras. Also, have you considered Reverb Gen 2? My pitools experience was less than stellar. But that was over a year ago so maybe things have gotten better. I loved the wider FOV of Pimax 5K+, but Reverb had better clarity so I went with Reverb. -
Trade off for Huey. It's almost essential for rotary, I think.

CPU overclock - is it truely worth it for DCS?
hansangb replied to sirrah's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Sirrah, what kind of CPU cooler do you have? When I overclocked my 8700 to 5.1GHz, I delid'ed it using RocketCool tools. Took all of 45 minutes or less. It was beyond easy and the temperature drop was very noticeable. For me, it made a big difference as I only play in VR. And every FPS helps with VR. As I recall, I kept mine at Adaptive, and Vcore of 1.35 or less. At the time, it was delid'ed and had an AIO cooler. But on my new 10700K, I just went with Noctua tower cooler. -
£200 for Reverb is a great deal. The trick to VR is that you need to start slow. The minute you start to feel bad, stop and get some rest. Over a week or two, almost everyone gets over it. Of course it helps if you have a beefy rig. Having said that, in the VR Subthread under INPUT/OUTPUT thread, a person with older rig just cranked the resolution down (to about Rift level) and had smooth experience.
-
I think the rumors of paper launch has been debunked by many. But if it makes your Navi launch more exciting, go for it.
-
Are you wanting to go to Rift because of cost? There are better HMD even accounting for prices. And I know everyone freaks out about FB and what they want to do. I left Rift because they fell behind to others and Rift-S was a disappointment at best. But Google reads every email for ads. And AMZN tracks everything you look at for the same reason. Not sure why FB's announcement is so bothersome. Unless you use a VM to browse, and blow away the VM every time (and use duckduckgo/incognito mode) tracking by a vendor is impossible to avoid.
-
I believe the thread of AMD forced NVDA to reduce the price. So good for all of us. As for the paper launch, Games Nexus pretty much proved that it wasn't. There was an incredible demand which caused record traffic for all the players.

Everyone wants better things for DCS. We're all part of a community. But the thing most people don't understand (which is OK, it takes experience) is that changing the core of a base while it still has to run is incredibly difficult. Why do you think for the most part, Apple's iOS hasn't changed much. or Android. It took decades for Cisco to change IOS to NXOS and it was rocky launch to say the least. When you have an installed base, transitioning to something while maintaining the current train is hard. Unless you have the wherewithal to 2.5X your staff overnight so you can have 100% dedicated to new core, and another 50% working on integration challenges. And the original staff working to keep the lights on. This is not a defense of a fanboi. *IF* there were better options I would switch in a nanosecond. As Nadela said, technology has no respect for history, only innovation. So I'm more likely than most to give a little slack to ED. If you think about it, F16 came out of nowhere, the A10 upgrade is a gift, as was the supercarrier. If they had dedicated the staff to fixing/optimizing the core, EVERYONE would have been yelling about lack of content/update. So it's not as simple as "switch it to Vulkan dammit" Unless everyone signs up to not play DCS for a year so they can only work on that optimization. Which, of course would be suicide for ED. If people only knew how much work it is to do regression testing, how much work it is to integrate new core to an existing core, how much more difficult every checkout is. We're asking ED to do a heart transplant while the patient is running a marathon. And that's not easy. Again, I want a smoother less taxing DCS. But what they have now is FAR more than I expected. And I'll continue to enjoy it for what it is. And incredible game that allows one to be transported to a cockpit.

Red herring. Would you complain that a Toyota Prius can't win the Daytona, ergo it's USELESS? Everyone wants more and better performance. To state that DCS is a lost cause for VR is very different than saying it needs Crysis level hardware to run. Also, you can reduce the resolution to make it run smoother. It's a trade off but that's life in general. All we do (well, except Musk, Gates, and Bezos of the world) is trade one thing for another.

CPU overclock - is it truely worth it for DCS?
hansangb replied to sirrah's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
For monitor 2D? Probably not. You probably can't tell the difference between 50 and 60FPS. For VR, it *could* help smooth it out. Every dropped frame can add up. -
CPU overclock - is it truely worth it for DCS?
hansangb replied to sirrah's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Ahhh, the great debate of DCS. We know for a fact that it uses minimum of two threads. One for sound. But there are also reports of it using more threads than two EVEN when accounting for the DCS thread moving around from cpu to cpu (processor affinity) -
To me, 45FPS is very smooth. But it also seems like it's very personal thing as some hate 45 while others, like me, think it's great. OF COURSE 90 is smoother. But 45 is fine too. It doesn't make me sick or anything.
-
But he's supersampling at 1.5 for his Vive. Also, in general, the video looks very smooth no? W/O a lot of dropped frames. I was worried about the high resolution of Reverb, but not having to supersample really made it smoother, IMO.
-
45 FPS for 1080Ti seems reasonable. I don't know if anything will have a huge jump in performance. Also, remember, with reprojection type of tech, you never see anything other than the 45 or 90. There was a thread here, for reducing the Reverb resolution to achieve much better FPS. Found it: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=285493

Man...You mean I've been enjoying my VR and I've been wrong all this time???? What the hell was I thinking???? Utterly useless comment of the year.

3080 performance with different CPU'S
hansangb replied to Bearskin's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yup, would love to see DCS stats. -
I loved the wider FoV in 5K+. But in the end, the software made me jump to Reverb (that and added clarity - from 5K+)
