Does Wags original post regarding AA and AF ingame being off with deferred shadows turned on still apply after the latest update?

Target visibility seemed to be an issue in real life as well. When filming the Battle of Britain movie "the Spitfires, Hurricanes, Messerschmitts, and Heinkels were repainted into authentic 1940 colors, but were so perfectly camouflaged, that they could not be seen against the ground or sky. Most of the aerial scenes were filmed with clouds in the background, so the aircraft could be seen."

How stable is everyone finding the Normandy alpha release? Is anyone having any major problems? I just wanted to check on this before I commit to a major download with Australia's blindingly slow download speeds. Or would it be better to wait a couple more weeks for the release version? Cheers, Scream.

Gunsight Range and Convergence
Screamadelica replied to imacken's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Actually you have summed up the situation quite well. In reality, during a combat situation you would be lucky to have time to alter the target wingspan before it all started. Just set the range to the convergence setting, 300 yards or whatever the official distance is, and forget about it. The best advice is "Get close, and when you think you are close enough, get closer." Everything else is just a matter of practice. In deflection shooting, there are so many variables involved, it usually becomes a case of "fire when it feels right". Cheers, Scream. -
Taxi with the Spitfire is a PAIN!
Screamadelica replied to Crash *'s topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
As Buzzles says, pre-empting the aircraft's behaviour is the key to easier taxiing. As soon as you hit the right brake, get ready to give the left brake a little tap just to level things out. Know your aircraft and anticipate. This is what they mean by dancing on the brakes, a one and a two.... Mapping the warthog joystick button 3 at the base of the stick gives a similar physical action to using the spade grip lever. -
+1 to all of the above, especially the Mosquito.

It would be good to know what the official convergence range is set at in DCS. Some experiments have suggested that it's around 275 yards, but we really need to know the confirmed official setting as it is very important when setting the gunsight on the Spitfire. Can this be found in the files somewhere? Cheers, Scream.

Ground Crew holding the tail...

A black lab for Michael Caine in the Battle Of Britain. If it's good enough for Mr Caine it's good enough for me! -
Rudder effectiveness in flight

The future of WW2 birds around here is so bright that......:matrix:. Sorry, its been a hot day, too many beers and I think my brain is affected slightly. -

+1 vote for pets. A black Labrador is a compulsory accessory for any Spitfire pilot. :) -
Thanks Sith. I'm more than happy with what ED is doing, even without the extras, at the end of the day we will all have a great WW2 sim and that is the best reward of all. Cheers, Scream.

I understand where David is coming from. The higher tier reward would have given a bit of an early look at the Normandy map, but as Sith said EDs development path doesn't really allow for that. It just means that that reward has lost a little bit of it's value in that regard. I think it is best that everyone has access to the map at the same time, it will make for a much better MP situation and at the end of the day I'm happy that we are getting a beautiful WW2 environment to fly around in and cause general mayhem. Maybe ED could clarify the higher tier rewards a little bit. A while ago Sith mentioned that the physical rewards such as shirts, caps and calendars would be given out at the completion of the DCS WW2 project. Does that mean when we get the Normandy map or the P 47 or do we have to wait for the ME 262? I may have to switch to a larger shirt size.... Perhaps a poster of WW2 nose art beauties would make up for the lost early access.:smilewink: Cheers, Scream.

Just did a bit of a check on this and for the Spitfire the DCS model is correct. Braking pressure is still present when the rudder pedals are set at neutral, the pressure is just applied evenly. Pressure is only reduced by releasing the lever. I'm interested in how the brakes are being assigned, button or axis, and what feels the most natural and easiest to use. The brakes appear to be used in short bursts and not left on, so a button seems the best solution, using the No.3 button at the base of the WH joystick. Cheers, Scream.

I think this really is the key to smooth taxiing.

Essay, PART 2: Getting the tail up...
Screamadelica replied to Chief Instructor's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Thanks for taking the time to post these essays Chief. Great reading and very much appreciated. -
So, 250 yards it appears to be. It would still be nice to have some official confirmation just to keep my OCD at bay. This is important for me as I set the gunsight range to convergence distance, adjust the target wingspan/base ring and when the target fills the sight you know that it's trigger time. Thanks for that spiffing little bit of information. Nicely done.

It does seem to be a bit overdone at the moment. I've had this happen a few times, doing a roll then without warning it goes black. Panic and think the screen has shut down, then hold the stick steady and pray. It tends to make you a bit twitchy when you start to do anything that pushes the edge a bit.

Steady on chaps. The new Spitfire MK IXs are scheduled for delivery soon, no more messing about with those Yank aircraft and all those blinkin' switches. And whilst it's been jolly good fun stooging about in these captured Jerry kites, it's time to do some proper flying. Intelligence chaps are talking about a big op in Normandy coming up, so get some sleep and no propping up the mess bar. Training starts immediately our new aircraft arrive. Try not to break them. Carry on gents.

IAS meter ruined with diving
Screamadelica replied to WildBillKelsoe's topic in DCS: Bf 109 K-4 Kurfürst
It's definitely not a case of the pitot freezing over. Pitot heater was on when it happened to me. The mystery continues..... -
51 years young, just sneaking in. First flight "sim" was the Renwal Battle Of Britain board game. That and running around the room with model kits.

IAS meter ruined with diving
Screamadelica replied to WildBillKelsoe's topic in DCS: Bf 109 K-4 Kurfürst
I had this same thing happen the other day. First thing I did was try and tap the gauge! Whilst diving before starting a loop, the IAS got stuck around 600kmh mark, I figured that maybe the g forces during the loop had somehow jammed the needle. Managed to get it free again by throwing the aircraft around a bit. I've also had sudden blackouts without having the usual slowly fading vision when pulling out of a dive. I was putting that one down to old age.....:smilewink: -
What will be the first thing you do in the spitfire?
Screamadelica replied to flare2000x's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
This sounds very familiar. Add to that the effects of several Spitfire ales and it could be a couple of days before take off. -
Things to do list: Spitfire Ales moved from cupboard to fridge Wash silk scarf Clean goggles Watch "Battle Of Britain", "Dark Blue World", and "Piece Of Cake" Starting to feel that enjoying flying the Me 109 is somehow unpatriotic. Interest in flying all other DCS aircraft fading rapidly..... Diagnosis - Spitfire Fever confirmed. Cure will be available in two weeks. Be Sure. :smilewink:

Nice answer Rel4y. I think that about puts that one to bed. Bright white to blueish tracers please ED. And a cookie for Rel4y.
