DCS WWII: Pacific Marine Question

Great map. To be honest the pacific maps could be broken down to areas that most shouldn't be overwhelming to create. Carolina Islands, Mariana Islands, etc would be pretty simple it seems to create and would be great for carrier ops. Even a larger island group like New Guinea/New Britain map is going to be mostly jungle with few cities/towns much different to create than our current Georgia Map.

Nah, with the limited resources and the time it takes to model one a/c, I'd prefer they focus on the ETO only. Whilst I'd love a PTO campaign, I don't particularly want to sit there for 2 hours flying from my carrier to the enemy. Remember, a lot of the air battles were fought out at sea over long distances.

it took quite a few hours to get to Berlin too ;)

man i would KILL for a dcs corsair, hellcat, or zero! at least we're already getting a P-40

+1 for Whistling Death. At least the Brits flew 'em too...

and we could reuse the future Lightening, P-40, and Spitfire as well.

im necromancing this because its such a sweet idea.... i would think map development would be uber quick with this too... model new guinea and bring something entirely new to the prop crowd

dooom, you dirty necromancer you. :D Yes, it needs to happen eventually. Maybe the beginning stages would just be some map making geared for the pacific and a 3rd party working on a Zero to pit against the Stang. That would get the ball rolling.

I love many of the Japanese warbirds, actually almost all of them. And I also love the Hellcat, Corsair and Dauntless.

But... I do think unless a new 3rd Party form around Pacific theater, I believe there already is much to cater to from 40s Europe, all the way to 2000s jets, and ED and current 3rd parties seem to currently have their plates full with potential additions to current theaters that have modules, not to mention more maps fo them...

So sticking with more content to current periods of Western WW2 Theater, Korea / Early jets, Cold War and post Cold War look more reasonable to me.

Considering incoming P-40F the choice of New Guinea as such map would be rahter obvious. It is lately a bit forgotten theater of war and lacks some recognition as for 3 years of fierce combat it was area of true attrition war.

The map could cover something like this area :

oTpOiE.jpg

To the west there could be added main Japanese Army complex at Wewak. With that a main region of 1942 and 1943 combat covered its really easy to bring here anything you wish.

The natural competitor would be A6M2b model 21 or A6M3 model 32, and as most see, we have FW-190D and P-51D which fight in rather limited environment (from historical point of view) yet they give joy to so many players.

With 2 planes, from which one is already covered (P-40F) choosing and making the A6M model would really not be that hard. There is certain amount of Zeros flying and some like the Chino Planes of Fame museum run even on original engine. I mean all is at hand and requiers just some money.

Someone asked if there was any Sim game similar to DCS focusing on PTO, and mentioned Il-2 as it tried to be one.

Certainly it tried, but without and good will and desire to become. Developers were reluctant to seek Japanese sources, which truly in last 15 years became easy to get.

Making a Zero-sen to compete with P-40F is not a problem and in my opinion would give many people a lot of fun.

Can you imagine what it would be like to launch off a carrier loaded up with bombs, ammo and fuel dropping off the forward deck skimming the waves using oculus rift?

Ok, I'm excited.

Can you imagine the forums and posts from people not able to take off from a carrier loaded up with bombs and ammo... we can barely handle a modern day paved runway with these birds :D

yea however sinks the carrier first wins.

mission reset round 2.

I think that would get old fast, not to mention it would be pretty linear, carriers only carry so many supplies, having a piece of dirt in the middle at the very least to fight over would be the best, I mean that is what the Pacific theater was all about... different pieces of dirt scattered through out the Pacific to get to the next one

+1 on Pacific, you'd have a open wallet from me.

Aggressiveness was a fundamental to success in air-to-air combat and if you ever caught a fighter pilot in a defensive mood you had him licked before you started shooting.

Dont forget the coral! I remember talking to an RNZAF ground crewman who worked on Corsairs. When they were based on coral airstrips, the prop blast during engine tests etc. was powerful enough to embed pieces of coral into any exposed skin - he was still picking bits of coral out of his legs some 30 years later.

I dont think most of the people realize the distances in Solomon Islands Campaign. Between Rabaul and Henderson is over 650 miles in a straight line.

I havent seen anyone flying with P-51D a long distances flights in DCS and I doubt anyone would be capable of flying in front of his PC for 4 hours to Henderson (or from Henderson to Rabaul), take part in combat and than return with same long flight.

Even if one would take-off or refuel on Bougainville that is still 400 miles in one way.

That is why New Guinea is way more reasonable in terms of gameplay. From Lae to Port Moresby its 180 miles in straight line, to Milne Bay 330 (so still quite a lot), from Wewak to Port Moresby 450 miles which is the longest range from one base to another in that region.

New Guinea seems to be a very reasonable area to fly and based on my own knowledge it involves far more types of aircraft operated there.
