190 or 109?

Hi there.

 

This tread probably won't get much attention knowing that everyone is caught up in the July updates, but I'd like to know which aircraft you would rather fly in combat, the Fw. 190 D-9, or the Bf. 109 K-4. What do you like and dislike about each aircraft, and why?

What would we be flying it against? If it's a Mustang:

190 has better visibility, but 109 I would rather fly because the K-4 is a late model plane and has much better turn rate than the mustang

Very hard decision, but i have to say K4. I love Doras too but 109 have always been "my plane".

109 K :

Pros

- Turns better at most speeds

- Pretty crazy top speed

- Very good climb rate

- Not sure, but I believe Me retains energy better than Fw

- Quite resistant to departures and relatively easy to correct when departs from controlled flight

- Decent for both angles or energy tactics

 

Cons

- Controllability suffers at higher speeds, conrols become very heavy and lose authority

- I have nightmares landing and taking off with P-51, I can only imagine the horror they'd present in a Bf-109 :)

- A bit bad cockpit visibility, especially backwards visibility is rather poor

 

190 D :

Pros

- Better roll rate

- Overall better armament (a bit arguable though)

- Better visibility

 

Cons

- Doesn't like low speeds

- As far as I know, more prone to departures and departures themselves can be more violent thanm ost other aircraft

- Slightly lower top level speed at most altitudes than either 109K or P-51

 

Don't know which one is better in acceleration, it would be more important than maximum level speed in my opinion.

 

As for armament, I believe K Messerschmitts had 30mm motorkanone, which is very powerful but, has a low muzzle velocity, and not a very flat trajectory, and a bit lower than average rate of fire. So it doesn't sound ideal for fighter vs fighter type of air combat. May be if 20mm motorkanone is also an option, it could be better for dogfights, even if it's shell is quite weaker.

 

I always liked 109's armament is all centered, instead of spread all over the place on aircraft. Dora's guns also are more or less centered but not as much as with 109. Guess we'll just have to wait and see which armament setup will perform better :)

 

Love them both, got 190 already, but it is inconceivable for me to not get a 109 when it's available, that goes for any 109 version, yes even a Buchon :D

The nose guns in fighters were a great idea. Less drag and more accurate at close range!

109 all the way. I was pretty decent with it in IL-2 online, but never could fly the 190 well enough.

i dont know yet, i wanna try both (and all)

but i think because of the better turn rate i will choose the Messer (and the Spit on the other side :P)

 

by the way: im not sure but is there no MW-50 on the 109K4 ? :dunno:

Dora if you're only choosing one right now. We know it will be coming out in one month and who really knows when the 109 will really ship. Realistically both of these frames we're at the far end of their lifespan with increasingly better planes on both fronts when they entered production.

Doras elevator authority at high speed, high altitude performance, weight of fire, spacious tie fighter cockpit and good all around view. Since in simulated/real combat I would only be doing BnZ and that's for my own survivability. The FW-190 D9 is a very purposeful and locked in design. It was designed for the high speed pass...

 

Turning and burning your energy away in combat is certain death. Stay high, stay fast.
