Good read , nice to get some outside eyes on it for a more user-oriented preview.

Especially the estimate it be could be release at best maybe this quarter but not likely before , so we can relax a bit on the 'Release it !!!' threads.

the L-39 is obviously very early WIP by the looks of the cockpit but its cool to see its already flying ingame.

The Mig-15 looks great , there was a small mistake in the article where it was stated it was still PRE-alpha, that cant be true.

1. Waggs last gunnery tutorial states its Alpha.

2. Its scheduled to be release as a beta this month.

p.s

to Mudspike guys - i expect you guys to press Waggs hard next time to get you some F-18C eye candly :D

Nice article. Disheartened about the time scales though. More waiting :(

It´s not a surprise, just confirmed what has been said in a more cautious tone after the heady outlooks late last year. Made me laugh though. This has been dragging on for so long...

I remember when suggestive posts made me and others believe it might be there in a short time more than once before. Look where we are now: "2015 - most likely". Unless this is some epic trolling, the best thing is just to move on to other things. At least for the time being...

Nice article. Disheartened about the time scales though. More waiting :(

Wags is very careful with his wording these days, so Its more about treading careful than anything else, so dont start stressing everything right now, the timeline in the 1st post should still be what we are looking at.

Lets not turn this thread into a woe is me thread though... ED is working their butts off to get this out as soon as possible and in the best shape as possible...

Note: Please stay on topic. Off topic posts will be removed. This thread will be heavily moderated.

If you want to discuss the above article I suggest you comment on it at mudspike. We want to keep this thread as clean as possible so information on DCS 2.0 is easy to find.

This question wasn't asked in the interview but it might be information that could be maybe revelaed at this point?

How big is the Nevada test range map currently, and no I don't mean in square miles or kilometres, I mean in GBs on the hard drive? I remember reading that they are aiming to keep it as low as possible but that it was expected to be quite 'biggish', I was just wondering.

Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.

I think as they are still optimizing all aspects, the final size isnt known right now. I'll ask if we can get a rough estimate, or if they are comfortable saying right now...

I am curious as to which of these statements are correct.

From post #1

The airfield locations have the greatest detail (elevation mesh and textures of 2 meters per pixel),

From Einstein EP's article:

Even so, it’ll be a highly detailed map, with meshes down to 1 meter in specific areas,

Thank you Sith, even a rough 'max' estimate would be much appreciated! Space on the SSD is getting tight, and I was wondering if Im going to need to invest in another one for Nevada.

Yeah, 2 meters per pixel could mean meter by meter, or rather 1 square meter per pixel.

What I meant is the first post could be an average, and the comment from Mudspike might have been showing the best.... or something along those lines...

Ok, answers I got:

Airfields areas are from 1 to 2 meters, but also remember that these areas being the most detailed would have gotten the most work from texture artists as well, so its not like they are raw imagery anyways.

File size is as I thought, undetermined yet, until they get it into a release candidate, they wont know for sure.

I am planning to build a new rig at the end of the month.

Is there any specs about the recommended hardware for Edge, or should I get something similar to what Wags put in his signature ?

Are ati R9 handling Edge better than Nvidia or so ? It would be great if we couldget a benchmark as soon as possible

All of these posts lamenting the fact that ED hasn't provided exact specs for DCS 2.0? Once again of course they aren't going to say anything because the software isn't done yet..

I can only IMAGINE the screaming that would ensue if ED released a spec and then had to change it later.

The HORRORS! You folks would have a friggin cow..

AGAIN

Anyway, there is plenty of information that HAS been provided if you look at what has been said and done.

Multi-core is NOT supported... (So pretty much the same rule applies going forward. Buy the fastest MHZ I-5 that you can get your hands on or spend some extra and get the I7 if you do video processing.

Memory is currently something like MIN 6Gig.. So buy 16 and you should be good.. 32 and you are future proof. (I would BUY 16 Gig but have a mainboard that could take 32.)

Current DCS 2.0 testers have stated existing DirectX 11 cards are being used for testing and that multi-GPUs are supported. So considering that BOTH AMD and Nvidia have issues, pick the one that you are the least mad at and buy one (or 2). I still think the Nvidia thing is overblown so I would buy 2 970gtx's...

It isn't that difficult folks if you look at what they HAVE said..

So my fairy tale system based on the above would be:

Core I5 (Fastest I could find)

With 32 MEGS RAM,

2 970GTX video cards in SLI

Windows 7 or Windows 10 64 bit (Depends on when I bought the equipment.)

Closed loop water cooler for ease of build

FATALITY 850 power supply

Plenty of horsepower for whatever you are going to do in the next 2 or 3 years including DCS 2.0...

LOL Looks like this is the question about every 4 pages or so now..

Above is my response to that question I left about 4 pages ago..

Draw distance?

Watching that latest Mig-15 gunnery tutorial video I can see no work has been done on improving the distance at which enemy aircraft can be spotted.

I know Edge is still in pre-Alpha, but I hope this will be considered.

If DCS is to properly do the whole WW2 aircraft combat thing you need to be able to spot aircraft at realistic distances.

At the moment aircraft seem to get a few km out then just magically disappear!

Here's hoping!

@skatezilla

i am running 32g of mem. how do i set this up correctly? i think i have tried this at one point but didnt see a benefit.

specs in my signature

I doubt there is any human noticeable difference between a RAM drive and an SSD. Especially if you count the time required to first have to load things into your RAM drive anyway.

Just buy the fastest Nvidia GFX / Intel CPU you can afford, min 8gb RAM and the biggest SSD you can afford, and you'll be fine.

Scary stuff to think there won't be any improvements/changes...though what I saw is a YouTube video and I can't say that's an accurate representation of any modern sim's rendering capabilities.

400~MB/Sec Avg Sequential Read vs 3500-4500+MB/Sec Seq. Read (DDR3->DDR4)

Yeah, No Difference what-so-ever, Once an image is loaded at boot, it's in the ram until you shut down, then it's saved back to the non Volatile memory, I Loaded 10GB into my Ram in a few minutes at boot, my system stays running weeks at a time, and is behind APC Battery Backup.

Even then, there are now PCIe3.0 4x-8x SSD Drives that read/write up to 2500MB/Sec.

SATA6 SSDs are going down, the SATA6 Port has a Max Bandwidth of 600~MB/Sec.

AS for DCS2.0, that Vegas Night Shot is the bees knees...

Even the CARs driving around have Headlights....
