Caucasus Map Texture DLC by Starway

I think big part of the pack is the work on the files that tweak the graphic engine (the well known luas and some shaders Wags talked about). Closing those settings behind a copy protection might not be desirable for ED. Not protecting those might render the pack trivial after few mods from other creators around these places.

 

Imho... if the pack is worth it, ED should buy the rights and incorporate it by default in DCS. Of course it could still be a matter of... money.

I don't see how this is "unfortunate", donations are a viable way - especially since some people here seem very eager to pay double for regular modules.

Yes, this is how it should have gone from the begining. DCS needs this badly, Starway has made it, they should pay him for it and make it part of the game. Not everything can/should be a DLC. The current texures look old and out of date and that must be hurting sales.

 

Also Starway has done a lot for DCS in addition to this, and a lot of people want to show appreciation through a donation. He really should set something up so we can do that for him.

By the way, an easy and low tech way of protecting this would be as follows:

1: Zip and password protect each copy

2: Create a unique password for each copy - link that in a spreadsheet to the purchaser

 

I doubt many in the community would pirate this. To anyone who would consider it - Don't! You're not striking out against "the man", you're being a c£$% to someone who has given a lot of time and effort to all of us for free.

 

If there is anyone in the community who can provide Starway with a free protection system for his work please do so and do it for FREE. You can download many examples of his work for free, so it should be a matter of pride for people here with the skills to pay the bills to return the favour for once!

I believe Starway is on vacation… he will be deciding how to proceed. Starway seems like a true professional with overwhelming support from the community, I am sure he will bring about a solution soon.

Nevada's textures aren't protected. The protection works on the terrain config lua file.

 

If ED lock down the textures, it'll mean every other texture mod cannot be used (eg, Mustang's, or Barthek's). It could also break some other graphical mods.

It'd also mean an end to the community mods of terrain textures. Which would be ironic as that's what Starway's mod started out as.

 

It's somewhat harsh to Starway as he was probably (and deservedly) expecting to make money, but it's actually the best for the community in the long run.

 

In the future, ED will probably find a way to support it (probably by allowing multiple texture sets per map, eg, a mod of a mod), but considering they've just rolled out the new version of the terrain engine for 2.0 and are working on the 2.5 merge, plus all the other items that need doing first which are arguably more important for DCS World as a platform than texture DLC, it's easy to see why they'd not do that now.

I think Starway could possibly make more money with donation option. He won't have to share his income with ED that way, and community seems to be really supportive to him IMHO.
