What was the strangest computer you ever came across?

Not necessarily strangest, but it was the first small, compared to the Kaypro 4 that I used for a long time, portable computer that I laid hands on. Plus it had an add on card that allowed me to run DOS as well as the stock CP/M OS.

I did real work on this thing, mostly DBase 3 (won't swear to the version) and I had stacks of floppies for my databases and other stuff. Carried it back and forth to work for at least a year. It was pretty sweet for it's time.

I'm just a pup at 52 this month.

My first flight sim was on the C-64 too with Micro Prose Gunship.

Thought it was the bee's knees and played hundred of hours on it. We've come a way since then:

At 51 I barely meet the requirements to post here. My first "flight sim" was Spitfire Ace by Microprose on a C64.

Hmm....Where are all of you when I'm in the servers? All I ever see there are 14-20 year old lunatics who only fly the F15. Sometimes I get so aggravated that I just don't go on line. I'll be starting up and some kid will careen into me as he's trying to do a supersonic flyover to show all of us his skills.

So I guess I just answered my own question. With age comes common sense I suppose. I'm only 52.

Have you tried Aerobatics Online server?

Yes there are still lunatics on there showing everyone what little skills they have!!, but also there are folks that enjoy formation flying too. I tend to steer clear of the F15 spawn airfields thus avoiding the "airshows"....I mainly fly either a helo or a prop aircraft anyway and have come across lots of serious guy's who can teach you a lot about formation work, which is harder than you may think! It's fun to jump in the back of an L-39 and fly with someone who can fly well in formation, another good reason to try MP.

58 coming up soon. I first experienced flight simming on a PC Windows 95 (late starter) and a game called Apache, very basic from what I can remember, then a brief go on Microsoft's Flight Simulator. After many years break from the PC I discovered the Blackshark, then DCS. Now I have most of the aircraft in DCS and I'm several thousand pounds lighter for the pleasure, but I am ABSOLUTELY LOVING IT. I only wish I had more time to learn, too much else going on in my life, I have a 4 year old grandson who is Train Crazy, so I have decided to start a permanent model Railway set up. Trains, Planes, I suppose it will be Automobiles next.

59 here. Wet my teeth on the Coleco Adam Computer. Used to play a game called dam busters. It would take an hour to arrive on target then one or two chances to line up the lights on the dam and check your flood light to be at the right altitude to skip your bomb into the dam. Only been doing D.C.S. since August. Wish I found it sooner.

If your older then 1100 earth years

You will admire the wisdom, enthousiasm and depressions of all ages. Much is pointless, but that does not matter if you develop yourself and try to be reasonably content. Just take care of others who live too.

So youthfull bunch below a 100 years. Age does not matter at all, freedom does.

Encouraging!

For those that decline multiplayer I feel very sad that you've had bad experiences and would really encourage you to find groups where you can be with like-minded people, it can be intimidating for some and aggravating for others. It is possible to lock out bad influences, and its more possible to have much more fun flying with people you know and feel OK with.

It strikes me that those with the desire to, could reach out to the people that are listed here and set something up to meet just that effect, like run a group with shared aims, and if you haven't done that in seven years I'll do it. The magic of playing with other folks should never be missed just because you had a bad exerience with someone. I can tell you that idiots exist in all the age brackets and the over 50 bracket is certainly no exception, likewise, I've met remarkably mature young players in gaming that come across like their parents forged them with a hard book.

It's the thought of folks older than me that keep me going and this thread is full of awesome, as they say.

59 and still enjoy multiplayer but tend to feel a bit awkward some times.

Id like to join with other same age group, but as far as I know no squad in UK is just age membership qualified.

Not easy( sometimes) to join in with some conversations , not their fault I add just different set of values and experience's that's all.

71 here and still very much enjoying flightsimming!

just have a dedicated new system for it with a 42" ultra HD monitor: aiiii: beautifull!!

Yesterday made 2 maidentrips without the Mig 15 and the Albatros and again seeing, what a beautifull flightsimulator DCS is: terrain of DCS 1.5 with 3840*2160 and everything maxed: about 100 and even 120 fps!! and this combining with the very realistic (as far as I can know, ofcourse) behaviour of the aircraft.......

With such a big monitor, you feel a bit more part of the sim and in this way, it is not so difficult imagening it is real ( lol) and imagening the time of more than 50 years ago and wanting to be a Starfighter pilot...

Now, the very nice aspect of it is, that I have a neighbour who is "only" 70 years now and who was indeed a Starfighter pilot in these days.

Also nice is, that he too likes flightsimming and esspecially DCS with the A10C (waiting for the F18

Now, you see a difference between us: where, I like the flying because of the flying and also the not too complicated missions, he takes a bite in the complicated (and in my eyes even unrealistic complex) missions.

An example is the A10 mission "in the weeds": your targets are some tanks, which are surrounded by SAM's.

The mission is very, very difficult and I said to my neighbour "let it go and take another mission".

But not he: it took him some months, but at the end, he visited us and brougt us some cakes: he had completed the mission!!

Here you see clearly the difference between the "would be" fighter pilot (me) and the real fighter pilot (he)....

Well, isn't it nice, to be able enjoying this simming at this age!!

Turned 57 last week. Started Sims 25+ years ago after my original ppl instructor peeked in my log book and said I was flying just enough to kill myself. Discovered DCS back in April of this year. $2K Plus Alienware, tm hotas, ch pedals , etc. 42" monitor. Let me be an example for you younger guys. Save your money and keep your credit score high. Use older guys don't screw around when it comes to our fun and it ain't cheap!

An actual age poll could be revealing. Im thinking the avg age is the older set.

...

Not that there's a direct relationship but a pretty extensive poll back in 2004 yielded an average age of 31. That, of course, was for the old LOMAC title. While we're not dealing with the same sim today (but part of its lineage), I'd be willing to be that number isn't off by much.

Oh...and...soon to be 66.

Body = 71.

Brain = 12 going on 13.

I grew up with the abacus flight sim, but that was a load of balls. Then the first Microsoft Flight Sims arrived, like flying a brick on a giant world sized chessboard, the FM was probably based on the first flying carpets.

Getting bored with DCS now, need something more challenging, and I don't mean a direct flight to up yonder, I'm not ready for absolution yet, I still have a few more noses I want to tweek.

Age - Its only a number ! :blow:

I still have the C-64 and that sim and a few other Microprose sims.

I learned in machine shop doing maintenance on old equipment, buy same older machines cheap, then cannibalize them for parts to keep the originals going. In storage I have a half dozen C-64's still. I guess I am a pack rat. C-64 was my 1st PC early 1980's.

I am age 65. My memory is going a bit. Told my wife it's getting so every time I see her it is like my 1st date with her all over again.

I tend to stay with just one aircraft for awhile, then switch to another and stay with that one for awhile. But I still buy new ones. Patiently waiting for the Spit-9.

I play MP on both builds, but usually fly alone. I'm game joining a squad if you guys can put up with me! Cooper is the only other guy I've flown with and in the Ka-50. I am fairly good in the WWII birds, got 'em all.

62 here.....I started flying sims back in the pc dos days. I found DCS World a few years ago after my son made me start using steam so we could play Borderlands online together. I now have the oculus rift and love the vr experience for flying. I have a 32" ultra wide monitor but always prefer vr. I mostly like the helos and prop planes. The threat of being shot down by the young guys online just makes it more fun for me. I am glad to see I am not the only older guy though...

I'm really glad to see and hear of all you guys over 50 that still enjoy flight simulators. I also see where most have flown some of the older sims. The time sure flys as the older you get...seems to me. I am waiting for 2.5 or what ever the stable build will be. Got a new computer and only want to load it with something I wont have to play computer tech.

How many of you still have your old computers? Do any of you remember

B TO B or Back to Bagdad? If you( first time I ever heard of putting in a second video card...outside of a 3DFX dual board) installed a cheap mono video card beside your evga or svga card....and a mono monitor again besides you color vga monitor and then pressed F7..woaha..you had the radar display on the mono monitor.

I thought that was the coolest thing since sliced bread. (And I remember when most bread was not sliced...and the ice man brought big blocks of ice for your Ice Box..if you were nice the ice man would chip you off a small piece of ice....and of course the coal man...stayed away from him kinda..he would joke and say he would put us down the coal shoot. I also remember the Junk man coming down the street in an old horse drawn wagon with all kinds of stuff hanging off his wagon and his horse always had a straw hat on with a flower in it.....you can blame him for my addiction to airplanes...one day he had a toy plane...and he gave it to me..cause I always brought out a carrot for his horse..man was I the king of the block with a real metal airplane....I was 4 then.
