DavidE Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 The leaked specs on the new series of Nvidia cards seem to be pointing towards the 3080 being the key card in the line but this comes with only 10GB of VRAM. My existing 1080ti has 11 so this seems a strange choice. Rumours are that a higher VRAM version of the 3080 may come later from third party manufactures, a lot depending on what AMD bring to the party. A key debating point I think will be whether DCS and other sims, particularly recent ones, require more VRAM than 10GB, particularly with VR (have the G2 on order). Would be interested to hear the views of those with the existing Reverb or with a detailed knowledge on the subject.
Svsmokey Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Bearing in mind that Vulkan will impose additional demands on Vram when implemented , i'll be looking for more . 10 or even 12 gb won't do it for me (G2 in my future as well) . So 3rd party Nvidea or RDNA 2 for me . Moore's Law YT channel sez 3rd party cards will begin launching end of Sept . 9700k @ stock , Aorus Pro Z390 wifi , 32gb 3200 mhz CL16 , 1tb EVO 970 , MSI RX 6800XT Gaming X TRIO , Seasonic Prime 850w Gold , Coolermaster H500m , Noctua NH-D15S , CH Pro throttle and T50CM2/WarBrD base on Foxxmounts , CH pedals , Reverb G2v2

VitS Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Well 10gig is definitely enough for 4k gaming, that's why they don't bother adding more. They obviously don't give a damn about VR...

Bob_Bushman Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 It's new ram with higher bandwidth and they offer new, improved compression. I expect a 3080 with 10gb to perform closer to an imaginary card with 15GB of ram. I'd start, with flowers, and something along the lines of, I got a really good deal on my 2080ti, so really it was cheap... Especially if you consider the performance...the couch you say... X-31_VECTOR Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 Very important to keep the same case for about 8 years, no matter how many changes happen inside of it. Ha! Yeah, all those glass-sided cases are clearly for single guys. If DCS has taught me nothing else, it has taught me how to fly under the radar.
cordite Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 With the apparent size of the 3090, that may not be possible. But I’m leaning toward waiting for the 3080 ti/super, or Big Navi. Less than a couple of hours to find out.
dburne Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 As long as I can get away with my current 1000w power supply, I will more than likely get the 3090 card. I want to give my impending Reverb G2 as much as I possibly can. Will be interesting to see what the official specs are, and what EVGA comes out with in the 3090 line. I know for sure I will wait for EVGA's offering. After I get it and am satisfied I will sell this 2080 Ti FTW3 and at least gain some money back. Bob_Bushman Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 I'd build a ventilated cupboard beneath or under my sim seat, just running cables around. Then you can swap out as needed. Eldur Posted September 2, 2020 Posted September 2, 2020 Very important to keep the same case for about 8 years, no matter how many changes happen inside of it. I have mine for 14 years now, but I don't have anyone in my life to keep changes in there secret from So I can safely replace it next year when I'm going to get a new one and just pop the 1080 and the drives out of my current one in there.

Krupi Posted September 2, 2020 Posted September 2, 2020 I would like to know as well, my EVGA GT 780 died on me after 4 years, I now have an MSI RTX 2060 SUPER. This time I am debating about going for a FE. I know that my CPU would be a bottleneck if I popped a 3080 in, but I might do that anyway until I can buy a new CPU. Is that a bad idea, thoughts? I just really like the EVGA cards, specifically their FTW models. My 2080 Ti FTW3 runs like a champ at 2.1 GHz boost and the card has never gotten above 65c whilst gaming. Normally runs upper 50's to just over 60.
