Where did all the WW2 people go?

Well since SOW ended, I just see a handful of people fly WW2. Did people go to a different sim or something?

I don't really want to learn to fly those sinking jets! If I go to that much trouble I may as well join the USAF and fly a real one lol.

BVR... What fun is that anyways?

I left before SOW(I flew a lot on it)  ended but it was for the known reasons and I keep an eye on news and forums and that's all. I may come back the day when there will be something incredible or huge, but now I have been pretty bored for 1,5-2 years.

For me personally, I've reassessed the time I am willing to spend with the sim since SoW closed up shop. It's not helped that I don't find combat in the cold war, nor the more modern jets compelling enough to put up with general VR performance problems and the many bugs.

Try the NO.20 Squadron server, It has around 20 or more pilots most of the time, weekends is 40 or more pilots.

4YA started with the old SoW missions but we've extended and developed a handful of those to include many more dynamic features. Our Version 2 release was last night:

  • Each side now scores points for bomber escort.
  • Some airfields now have destroyable warehouses so you can interrupt the supply of fuel or even airframes for the other side if you bomb the correct buildings.
  • Ground objectives have been significantly altered to bring them better into line with historical reality. Unit selection in the ground objectives has been altered as well.
  • Failing to complete ground objectives in sufficient time means your own supply of airframes, fuel and bombs may slow down as higher command diverts resources elsewhere.
  • Ground targets are now marked (approximately) on the F10 map. No more messing about and squinting at lat/long coordinates!
  • Performance has been significantly improved across the board.
  • More and more historically accurate features are in the missions: all the squadrons, markings and liveries for the Allied side are as accurate as we can get them for now.
  • German radar stations are gradually springing up in their historical locations, and destroying those takes out GCI and EWRS coverage. (Ditto with the Allied radar ships and ground stations.
  • (edited to add) Player stats are available in the 4YA Discord. These update live (well, 60 second delay) on a rolling 28-day basis. You wanna keep your spot at the top, you'll have to fight for it...

For version 2.1 we're planning to add AI flights that scale with the number of players on the server and RTB if enough humans are online. More maps and aerial photos of ground objectives should be coming as well. The task of bringing more and more of the old SOW missions up to the new standard is a big one and the mission dev team are constantly beavering away behind the scenes. We're also working on squadron-level stats to encourage teamwork and group flights.

And if you want to immerse yourself in what 4YA WW2 has to offer, here's our richly detailed pilots' handbook: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SOr5HdDV57bF78Pell5tkpW24aXcSNKJ/view

See you in the skies!

Since SoW ended I've been playing on Enigma's Dynamic Cold War server, because I'm not keen on BVR either and the cold war jets seemed the next best thing. I've also enjoyed getting back into my helicopters and I like the dynamic aspect of the server. I do like the sound of the changes and improvements that 4YA have made to the SoW maps though so I think I'll be jumping back in and splitting my time between the two. I do miss the simplicity of the WW2 aerial gunnery and dumb bomb and rocket attacks.

Sad to say, I have given up on WW2 DCS.  For me, combat flight simulation is all about MP and since DCS WW2 is not delivering for me, in terms of a joined up package and plane set to enable the best WW2 immersive experience, I get my WW2 enjoyment elsewhere.

Happy landings,

Talisman

at least the behavior of the bombs is better there😆

I think times if in WW2 again big what does in terms of updates and bug fixes (there are already some come) has DCS WW2 still great potential and will attract just as many people again

Has everyone seen the most recent update?

Ya, Fuzzy's been killing it on working on the server, Never seen someone so dedicated in creating so much as he does with this server. Creating missions that are for everyone, Be it objectives or just dog fighting. Wanting you to get home alive and caring about your pilot is the name of the game. The whole squad is dedicated to the server. We also have modern Mondays at around 8 pm eastern time, If your around join us for that to. Also there are some top notch pilots that come in and fly the server. So watch yours and your buddies 6 at all times.

Salute.

I quite enjoy the N.20 server, though it has very low population during my hours. My preferred server.

Unlike 4YA, the N.20 server has Mosquitoes on the continent, and that saves me 20 minutes of flying across the channel - while that is immersive, it is a very high toll on my limited time.

The channel map is great and there the channel is narrower, so south England fields are more relevant. I hope more servers will use this map.

I have the 51 and 47 and theyre just too much constant effort to operate.

Not that much mate, a bit more with P-47 perhaps, but managed one managed all of them. Constant speed props makes your life way easier. It's quite more an effort to keep an eye on every system, sensor, whatever you have in a modern day playstation  cool screens many buttons thing. Warbirds demand your attention, but in an absolutely different and less stressful way than modern stuff IMO.

DCS WW2 just isn't up to par. Wildly inconsistent damage, engine and flight modeling make it thoroughly unenjoyable.

For now, my group (Historically, a WW2 group) is flying Cold War 1947-1991 for the most part with some holding their nose and flying in Enigma as well.
