MT - Visibility of ground objects through clouds

Nahen

Recommended Posts

I am flying above three layers of clouds (>40 000 feet) and can see objects on the ground 20-30 miles away.

Marked points are air defense vehicles and trucks standing on the ground. There was no such thing before.

Same here for me.  I was on the South Atlantic map.  But yes, you can now see ground objects through clouds.

Do you have labels on (as 'dots only'?)

It looks like the labels could be being drawn even when above clouds, which would make sense if you actually have or want labels on.

At least in VR using the MT build, I'm seeing spotting dots through clouds, both for aircraft and ground units. I'm using a Valve Index.

I have not tested ST and/or flatscreen.

My DCS settings for reference:

I've never used anything like this. I treat DCS like a simulator, not a game 😉

This might not be the right place to post, if it needs to go in the bug section I will put it there.

After the MT patch I've noticed that I can see players, AI, and ME structures extremely easily in VR. I'm not sure if this is some kind of intentional fix to make it better for VR players or what, but I have found myself constantly calling out targets air and ground as well as friendly aircraft LONG before my pancake friends are seeing them. They show up as large black pixels but are also visible through clouds (I think) which leads me to believe its a glitch or an unintentional side effect. Today I was walking my CPG in the apache onto an enemy compound from ~18km away at ~100ft elevation from the pilot seat with no zoom or anything. I also just watched a Longshot youtube video and he mentioned that he saw some bandits that i think were pretty far away but he was commenting on how well he could see them.

So what is this? A glitch or a godsend for VR?

VR always had been a better spotter for the Mk.1 eyeball than its 2D counterpart. I think there has been a rather scientific experiment video about this some time ago.

But with this bug/glitch is much worse. Anyone with a decent 2D setup properly and being close enough to the monitor can see everything with overcast weather with lots of clouds. The more clouds, the better you see aircraft and ground units.

This breaks the experience at any serious mission based on low intel and visual training to the point of avoiding 100% MT unless is for bug checking.

No dots enabled?

Intel i9 13900K | RTX4090 | 64 Gb DDR4 3600 CL18 | 2Tb PCIe4.0 | Varjo Aero | Pico 4 on WIFI6e | Virtual Desktop running VDXR

No, the objects themselves are visible through clouds and fog.

It is actually the single dark pixel 'speck'/'spot' placed to aid spotting without relying on units geometry from far distances. This is what's bleeding through clouds. Units 3d geometry won't bypass cloud masking. (ALL LABELS TURNED OFF, this is not related to any label or enabled aid in options)

This bug is also happening against atmosphere scattering at long, VERY long distances.

Bellow are both being demonstrated. It is not only ground units but all units including aircraft.

In the second picture, yes there are aircraft 19nm out, but the grouping that's flat in the blue circle is a SAM site very far away.

Explained further that is not related to any kind of label aid.
