Good evening.

I've been off the forum for almost a week. I decided to close the roadmap post because I was stressed, very stressed, I'm not going to go into details, as I don't want to end up being reddit fodder. I needed it, and no, my personal and professional situation is still the same or worse.

Nineline and Bignewy asked me why I had closed it and I explained that I needed a break, and a few hours later, when I decided to look at the forum, seeing the commotion, I decided that the moderation would reopen it for everyone to avoid problems.

What I didn't expect is that when I came back, a week later, some members attacked me as if my work on that post had no value.

This has made me even more depressed, and one wonders why I have "wasted" 11 years of my life, as if this were a job, unpaid, never asking for anything in return, nor having any involvement with ED or 3rd parties or external sources, thinking that you are doing something right, in keeping something so that later, others take it for themselves...

This makes me rethink that no matter what you do, you will never please anyone, much less will anyone care. In fact, in this week that I have been away and disconnected, no one has asked me how I was.

Unfortunately, this makes me think that now, if I am going to take a good long season away from here and rethink if it is worth having a dedication, if this fulfills me for something, think about what really matters to a community and what is the true meaning of all this.

It seems that entering the forum again was a mistake.

I'm very sure that there are many here and out there who, if reading your words there, will imediately think "yep, that sounds somewhat familiar".

Unrelated, but I read your post and hear echoes of experiences in what now looks like another lifetime. 

"Passion projects", you'll often read/hear the term.
These are of wide variety of complexity, done all at the cost of your free time and personal investment.

Sometimes for many years, maybe over a decade. 
Sometimes at the cost of uncalled and harsh criticism, misjudgement and misinterpretation.  From others and sometimes even from yourself - "why did I waste so much time and effort on this?" (etc).  When, after all, it was what you wanted to do (and going back you probably would end up doing it again).

Like others here (I suppose), I too look back and sometimes regret such long "passion projects" that, in the end, regardless of success and accolades (or not), have not given me the best "return" after such huge personal investment and effort, of my time and energy.

Yet there are more positives than negatives, experiences and lessons, and why most of us into these kinds of things end up repeating the process, although more "cautiously" next time (live and learn!). 

A few things I later learned to be true, and you might as well:
 

• For each loud "hater", there'll always be a quiet someone that appreciates, admires and recognizes your effort.
  If you've created something that lasted and was appreciated by so many, then it's because it had/has value.
   
• Give the least possible importance to what others opiniate (the "IDGAF" principle).
  Not just because it's of no importance, but mostly because it pollutes your perception of things.  
  Your mind is powerfull, it creates perceptions, and your perception creates your reality.  Do not let what is of no importance become your reality.
   
• Always question yourself if you're doing it for the right reason, and if you're giving it the right importance.
  If you're into a project for the recognition of others, or by some sort of commitment you feel obliged to, then it's not really the right reason and is not important.
  It's great if it benefits others. But if this is your own project on personal free time and effort, then make it for yourself first and foremost.
   
• If your passion project or hobby starts to feel like work, then it's because it has become like work.
  Step aside for a while (like going on vacations), returning only when you feel that fire again in you - otherwise it may consume you (aka "burnout").  
  Or simply don't return to it - no shame on that.
  Sometimes the best course is leaving it, and reignite that fire in you with one other project, something else, somewhere else.

No need to apologise for your English Silver. It’s better than my Japanese, or any of the other languages I don’t speak.

Taking a bit of a break isn’t all a bad idea, especially if you’re not getting any pleasure from it. Try not to focus on the negatives too much, easier said than done at times I know. A lot of good things are taken for granted by so many, not everyone’s so ungrateful or unappreciative. 

Some pretty good sentiments in here, take something from those, ignore the muppets. Hope you’re feeling brighter soon.

I know it is difficult but try not to let the toxic people get to you, I have been here in the community for well over a decade and have seen lots of different types of people come and go. Please report anyone not keeping to the rules or common decency, we will deal with them. As mentioned in our DMs if you need to have a chat let us know, both Nineline and myself are available, even if it is not DCS related we are happy to try and help you. Health and family come first no matter what so please take as much time as you need.

Sorry to hear that Silver!! I've been off the forums for a while and when back didn't notice this, but it's a shame you had to quit because of people after so long... I've known you in the community since really long ago, well before DCSW, and it's a real pity you had to get to this now after so long just because haters...

it is said already a lot, but there is a huge amount of people stepping into this forum and look up your post first to get the latest update informations.
After the reopening I was wondering why its quiet again, now, your posts explains it but to be honest, I expected exactly what you said.
Your work is honored. Look at the viewcount! Read the nice words of all the people appreciating your work in the last time.
 

This community is toxic. One can blame ED, but with the unthinkable amount of users they can not handle everything and one will get more of the loud ones like in reality but those are by far not the majority, that I can guarantee.

Love your work, would miss it if you leave but this is all fun and games until you get stressed by it. Do whatever is good for you, thats the only thing that counts.

I don't meant to be rude, but have you held a steady job and raised children? Because if you have you'd know that what you put forward is a recipe for disaster. Meaning is found though responsibility and taking care of others. And often as not by putting in the effort even when no one sees you do it and there is no credit to be taken, but simply because the effort is required.

 

And again, not to be rude, but the object of this discussion is a thread on a game site. It's very good thread and I'm thankful to Silver Dragon for putting so much effort into it, but it has become a community project, and indeed perhaps the property of the community, with many contributors and a very large viewership by this site's standards. The thread is a huge success and should continue and SD should feel very good about having it bear his name. 

 

I'm sure the vast majority of people enjoy the thread. That is as good as can or should be expected for a venture of this kind.

Sorry, I just saw it now. Thank you for your industrious work over the past 11 years! Don't doubt the significance of everything you did, it really makes things convenient for many people. There are always some unpleasant people on the Internet, maybe taking a break for a while is also a good choice. I will never forget you and your contribution, thank you, Silver Dragon. Best wishes.

I'm sorry to say this Beirut, but I find your statement (and others' previous ones) very unfortunate. And I'm sorry that you think that way, because it seems that the "community" has more rights than the effort, dedication and time invested by a person, whether in a "game" site, or in a paid job.

The problem is that this is how the character of some and others is seen and demonstrated... when it seems that some only like to look down on others, not what has been "worked on" over the years so that the community has a reference.

Your rights in this case, are limited indeed, as well they should be. You are participating in a game site forum, managing one thread to some degree or other, and as far as I can tell, exactly 0% of what is posted in that thread is original to you. Feel free to correct me, please, but I think none of what is posted was made by you. It is all taken from Youtuibe and other sites, including this one, and put into that thread to facilitate the news being seen. The thread is a conglomeration of pre-existing videos and posts. The thread itself, and again, correct me if I am wrong, contains 0% original information.

 

That said, I like the thread very much, as do many others, and I like that you are invested in it. But let's take a step back and see it for what it is; one thread on a game site with thousands of threads. Let's not make it more grandiose than it is. I think you should be happy that so many people, like myself, enjoy it. And the limitation is and should be exactly that.

 

As for ownership, I think ED can do with any thread or post, like this one, whatever they choose to do. It's their site, bought and paid for. And it certainly can be the case that a good thread, like yours, with millions of views and many many contributors, can be seen by ED as being of benefit to the community and deem it therefore the "property of the community" Meaning if you delete the thread, I would image they have every right in the world to bring right back to life because it benefits them and the community. And I would support that.

 

To whatever degree you manage that thread, I'll be the first to say thank you. It's a great thread. But it's not a job, it's not an original artistic endeavor, nor is it your personal property. It's a good thread on a game site and we all enjoy it very much. That is where it starts and ends.

Sometimes its best to read between the lines and try to understand the human aspect of a situation, so please leave it there and lets not have a back and forth on the subject.

OT but damn! Dragonlance! Those books should have been made into a movie. The animated version was ok but never completed. Miss those days!

Hello and good morning. I’m Silver_Dragon. As you may have noticed, my visits to the forum have become more and more sporadic, and I’m updating the roadmap whenever I remember. I’m not keeping up with the patches and almost never fly DCS World, only when I have to do a report on a module for a Spanish-speaking magazine. I’ve been working since early November in an IT job, a temporary position that will most likely end in January.

I’m very disconnected from both the development, the news, and what ED and the 3rd parties are doing. Simply, when I get home and have a moment, I watch YouTube videos, and on some days, I visit the forum. I’m sorry my followers have seen how I’ve been drifting away from this. I don’t know if I will return to being the same, time will tell. A hug to everyone and happy holidays

If anyone sees that I’ve missed something on the roadmap, please let me know in this post, or create a new one. When I have time, I’ll update it.

I very much appreciate the yearly roadmap post. Each New Years I look forward to reviewing the years progress of DCS World, and what is eventually coming sooner or later, or in the works that @Silver_Dragon researches, and lays out so well in the roadmaps originating post. SD's roadmap is comprehensive and well organized.
