I love the soft self-shadowing, much better than anything I've ever seen in a simulator. Also, the light cirrus (I think) clouds are also something new, and I'm looking forward to seeing if ED will do something about other types of clouds. I don't need weather simulator, but close-to photo realistic clouds (and maybe even their effects on flight, lift, turbulence and so on) would of course be welcome. The Lock On modelling (clear skies, small cotton puffs or full cloud cover) was a bit lacking. I hope DX11 will be put to good use here!

I'm not too sure about the implementation of HDR visual effects. Usually they are implemented as blooming of a very bright parts in picture, but I can see the opposite here as well - a dark halo around dark parts of picture.

It's subtle, but to me it kind of looks as a "processed photo" - many development techniques for photos (either analogue or digital) leave you with that result, but I wouldn't call it realistic. At least I don't think the human eye sees that way.

First one is a DCS:A-10C screenshot from SimHQ, notice the dark halo around airframe if I darken the image:

HDRbloom1.jpg

The second one is a photo:

HDRbloom2.jpg

I know it's a subtle effect, but I wonder why is it there?

I don't know why and if this effect is used here, but the human eye does something similar. The human eye is more sensitive for certain higher frequencies in images. Thus, edges are emphasized, contrast is locally increased.

This is called Mach Bands Effect. The (emphasis) filtering is sometimes used to mimic/enhance/please human perception.

Apart from this, some of these darker regions around the A10 seem to originate from image compression.

Regarding the HDR effects, i see some saying "i dont like it", but trust me, after a few hours playing with it, and then turning it OFF, you will hate how it looks. It looks much better with HDR ON, IMO :)

It depends on the HDR effect. Personally from what I have seen in other products I hate it and tend to turn it off. I can give you an example of a game that for me it was almost unplayable due to HDR effects, BFBC 2.

I am still waiting for a title that makes me want HDR on, I hope it will be DCS.

Best regards.

Does HDR always disable AA? That would stink.

i'm not sure what you mean by dark halo. but i think it's pretty clear that the lighting condition between the real and ingame photo are very different.

Is there a significant fps hit?

Thanks

P.S. Nice comparison shots Castle! Really puts into perspective the hard work going into the model and terrain.

Is there a significant fps hit?.....

Probably system-dependant. No significant hit on my system......Massive hit to the eyes though when toggled off.

in the right conditions I have no problem with it. But at night a GPS bomb is nice to have, no. What I am realy looking forward to are the retarted bombs that I can drop at supper low alt at top speed. Drop a full load on a empty and usless target night after night. (Flight of the intruder)

you must not want the ability to fly with fellow DCS simmers, in a multiple role A/C combat game engine.

Having the ability to fly all one inclusive Sim and to have combined A/C support under one roof is more desirable then having to load separate games to play one A/C.

Only have one handful of Sim pilots under different Sims, bring fellow simmers under one roof is much more feasible and desirable out come. More pilots more people on line with different roles and A/C support.

Just Like in IL2 you have different multiple role A/C and way more Sim pilots under one inclusive Sim.

I'm only saying it's kind of ridicules to see only A10c pilots flying around trying to shoot each-other down. One massive A10c Fur ball.
