Fri13 Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 You should want both to be as good as possible… Balance. Just remember seeing is believing… Visuals are processed extremely fast, they quickly influence emotions, and our emotions greatly affect our decisions making... never put one in front of the other if you want it to be as real as possible. Human can quickly focus far and close and feel both are sharp same time. Computer visuals can't do that, they only can render sharp and rest blurred where player is pointing a view or else everything is drawn sharp. When everything is drawn sharp, human still see only the ~0.5% of view as sharp and everything else unsharp. By adding DOF to simulate depth of field, it already is totally wrong. But adding blur to simulate thermal layers and thermal waves at long distance or high altitude, that is correct. No matter with what is player using to observe long distances, it isn't sharp image at all when thermal layers and waves renders everything blurry. i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.

Pizzicato Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 (edited) Depth of Field is Toggle-Able, and I'm pretty sure most people will use it on video/screenshots. This. I also wonder if there's the possibility of using this tech to address the on-going challenges around spotting enemy units at range. Sharply in-focus aircraft against an otherwise soft-focus distant environment could be a good way to "punch out" objects of importance in the environment. It would certainly be a step above the current everything's-at-the-same-level-of-focus limitation. If I'm diving from 30,000ft towards an aircraft at 20,000ft, I would expect that the nearer object would be in sharper focus - contrasting it against the ground below. I'm not suggesting any dynamism in the system (i.e. I'm not suggesting that the ground should come in or out of focus as aircraft pass into or out of the camera frustum), but visual contrast based on physical distance could be very valuable. May not be possible given that it's a post-effect, but it's a thought... Fri13 Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 (edited) Looks good improvement. And there seems to be same problem as with any engine that at long range units pops up as foliage can't be drawn songstress away with narrow angle of view. Only voxels would give that possibility. But improves reticles and aiming does make wonders while the core functionality stay same (read simplified). Interesting to see does engine support in future tracks to be left on ground, simple tamped grass is enough. siipperi Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 And the grass is quite heavily a WIP, but that wasnt what the vid was showing off. Hopefully, now it just covers everything and doesn't have really anything that would represent natural or human made field. In other words plain and ugly but graphics and that's sadly what most just look from it.... Add all kind of bushes, plants etc and suprise it looks a lot better.
