You're confusing "personal taste" with "objectivity".

Distinguish what's "real" from what looks obviously a video game is just a matter of having a couple of eyes.

It doesn't mean that it's not "good" (nor that it isn't "good enough"), it just means that it could be improved eventually (hence my "critics")... and I hope it will.

I have yet to see any game that doesn't look like a videogame but real life. I would like to know this game so i can test it out. And are you sure your objectivity doesn't turn into the hate? People were saying in early 2000 that something looked so real, it's just matter what we are custom to. Not every member of this community play these new games like titanfall that are supposed to have good graphics, but when you look closer textures are often lower than in DCS planes.

AFAIK DCS have best looking cockpits (any kind, tank, jets, cars -games) that we have on the market and if you are refering to other aspects of screenshots, sure, I have seen better looking clouds but I think most people are refering to that cockpit screenshot and how it looks as whole.

But can we please stop this nonesence when we clearly all understand this is update discussion not the compare dcs with imaginary good looking game.

Few.. but there's (that's why i mentioned Project CARS), btw I am not pretending that DCS will looks like real life (for the nature of the product, it couldn't with the current gneration hardware), i was commenting about those people who were calling "real" those two screenshots in the first page.

And are you sure your objectivity doesn't turn into the hate?

I don't think so.. i'm enjoying this product, I use it every day with my squadron. We all understand that probably due to the niche product, limited resources, etc. the game has the best possible engine it could have today, so we "accept" the situation and we never blame the devs. But accepting it doesn't mean that we don't have the eyes to understand that it is far to be "perfect", and we hope that it will improve.

I only half agree: limited to some vehicles (A10C, BS2.. etc.) the cockpit (and the whole aircraft) is perfectly reproduced. Something better could be done with the textures tho: they can be improved alot paying much attention to the details (we have seen some example with modded A10C cockpit textures already). The Su25 in the screen of this thread in example doesn't look "perfect", some of the textures used looks artificial (especially in the reflection), and the textures applied to the aircraft: look at the red star on the wing.. i would you call it "great"? I don't.

What's the nosense? I can produce better screenshots with the current engine, so i don't quite understand what's the "good" (better) thing that some people are claiming about those screens. I'm sure that those screenshots have been posted just for us to give a look at the new engine and not to show how better the new engine is!

This is talking about the game, not about an "imaginary product".

EDIT:- I'd better add that the above is intended to be humorous, before anybody has an aneurysm.

He might have a point: Devs might decide to tank EDGE altogether (bugs etc etc) and proceed with CORNER......

CORNER will of course be truly multi-threaded and support Quad crossfire; Occulus Rift and quantum computing in alternate dimensions where goats have enslaved humanity ?

I'm not really sure why one or two trolls always have to nitpick at a screenshot of something that's a WIP. Even so, I have yet to see any game finished or otherwise that looks 100% real.

To the devs: Those screenshots look amazing and my jaw literally dropped. Please keep up the hard work, we all (well the majority of us) appreciate it.

npole - I suspect that when edge is finally released, 95% of the time - if you took a screenshot - there'd be things in it that you could point to and say 'compared to game "x" this could be improved'.

I think that's true for any game.

but the fact is - the whole is greater than the sum of its parts

& while obviously individual things are improving (perhaps not fast enough for some ?), I can tell you that in the builds we're testing there are times as I fly along when I just look out the window and think to myself 'that looks SO real'

( - 'if only it were in 3D' :))...

.. & I've never really had that in ARMA.

No video game is ever going to look ' real' all the time, but the immersion factor seriously is going up.

yes, self shadowing on aircraft and weapons now works from inside cockpit also

Absolutely stunning! :)

The end of a long road, or maybe more like a waystation.

I´m sure it´ll be great.

Three (3) people in this thread used the word "real" to describe the screenshots. (Yes, I DID count it.)

I THINK, THEY GOT IT NOW. SO CAN WE PLEASE STOP THIS NOW?

Thank you! :o)

I propose that CORNER be renamed to VERTEX. That name sounds much more technologically sophisticated.

I don't want to misunderstand this, but... what does it mean? Are you testing a 2D version of DCS?

I think, he means depth perception. We only have a 2d projection of 3d objects when we look at our flat computer monitors.

Except that VERTEX is copyrighted by OCZ, so were back to square 1.

ONTOPIC,

i think those screenshots look excellent and do show a massive improvement over what we have now.

If the performance improves likewise we may just have a winner once EDGE comes out.

Speaking of which, I wonder if Oculus rift support will be an EDGE specific feature? (Although it's kind of irrelevant if the old IG is completely dropped before it is supported.)

Not commenting on the screenshots themselves (my God, the never-ending debates...), but I am still puzzled by something that has been pointed out in the early pages, and I would like to get back to it.

I thought it was said that the Caucasus map could not posibly work in the new IG, and would have to be redone from scratch for that to be possible.

From the Nevage/EDGE FAQ:

Will the Black Sea map in its current form work with EDGE?

No. Since the technology behind EDGE is dramatically different, down to the tools that create it, terrain needs to be built with the EDGE benefits in mind. This is a HUGE undertaking and not an easy task to redo something. HOWEVER, it has been stated that the Black Sea map is not going anywhere.

So, this has apparently changed, since we now have screenshots of the very Black Sea map running in EDGE.

I'm just puzzled by the contradiction, but hey, if it's just thatt ED figured a way to have the old map work in the new IG, then that is a great news by itself (maybe that should have been the news, then !)

Please, let's not go through that again.

A map is a map... Graphics renderer is not a map :)

EDGE is new graphics renderer (directx 11) and Nevada is the new map.

These shots are from existing map running in new graphics renderer.

Note the terrain in the Black sea does not take advantage of all of the edge features, to do so would require a complete rebuild of the terrain.

Afaik ED never confirmed "yes, Georgia map will run under EDGE", but it was always clear (to me at least) that the map could not possibly be dropped by ED and leave us with only Nevada in the future.

So there were then two options:

a) let Georgia run under the old engine and Nevada under EDGE

b) make Georgia run under EDGE as would Nevada

Option a) would be technological suicide - maintaining two different graphics engines. What would be the benefit - it would only complicate things A LOT.

Option b) seems the logical way: make the Georgia map data displayable under EDGE. I.e. convert the data to the new EDGE format, possibly by automated tools, even if Georgia - without adding manual work - would perhaps not be able to make use of many of the new features EDGE may provides.
