BravoM5 Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Hey guys, I started playing DCS World on Steam but, I now see that standalone is the better choice and would like to take advantage of the sale on ED's site this weekend. So I intend to switch to standalone. My question is whether or not I can simply move my DCS World install out of my Steam folder into another folder and launch from there and continue install additional modules into that location. Is the standalone and Steam install the same or should I re-download DCS World and the modules I have from ED's website? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
ED Team NineLine Posted July 31, 2015 ED Team Posted July 31, 2015 Yes, you should download everything from the ED site and start fresh, I dont know of anyway of moving your Steam install. Forum Rules • My YouTube • My Discord - NineLine#0440• **How to Report a Bug**
BravoM5 Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Yes, you should download everything from the ED site and start fresh, I dont know of anyway of moving your Steam install. I suppose I probably should, I did try it just out of curiosity and it does work. Essentially, what I did was move my DCS World folder under SteamApps/common to a folder outside of Steam. DCS World does run, however I don't know how it will react to future updates since when I ran the DCS updater program It tried to download 18GB. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

SkateZilla Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Steam is designed to have a Title and DLC localized, everuone jumped to steam for one reason or another, main reason I remeber was download speeds, then the Friends list etc. So DCS on Steam,, is designed to use DLC from Steam only, makss it easier for users to buy DLC, and the Steam UI/Application automatically downloads and installs neccasary items. Using Stand alone now is pretty much the best option. Buy something from the ED shop while logged into your account, license is automatically added, boot DCS, goto Module Manager, it prompts you, and you download and install everything automatically now. You can also buy modules from steam sale, get the Serial from the steam dialog, then log into DXS site, and bind it to your account and repeat the Module Manager process. Steam is self contained, cant add external modules without a bunch of jumping through hoops and stuff, and its not supported. Sometimes modules aee delayed past the ED shop release dates. You can add DCS Standalone as non steam game and rrack all that stuff / friends list as well. Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2), ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate, XFX RX6800XT Merc 310 (RX-68XTALFD9) 3x ASUS VS248HP + Oculus HMD, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + MFDs
ApoNOOB Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 You can also install DCS standalone over your Steam installation (in the default steam path) to still take advantage of the steam overlay/functions.
Skithis Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Steam and DCS? I would like to purchase C-101. Problem is, I have the steam version of the sim. Is there anyway around this? From what I've heard the steam version will not accept modules purchased from the ED store? If so, why are some models not included in steam?
cichlidfan Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 The only 'proper' way around it is to switch to a non-Steam installation of DCS World. ED has no control of whether a 3rd party sells their product on Steam. grunf Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 As cichlidfan said, install the standalone (non-steam) version. You can than buy both steam and non-steam modules, they work fine with standalone DCS. Bear in mind though that steam takes a substantial share in profit, therefore buying modules from ED store means more money for the devs, and hopefully more resources for developing new and improving existing modules, and game in general. Having the standalone version also means you can take advantage of both steam and ED sales, which is not the case if you have the steam version. :D
WelshZeCorgi Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Flash sale not applied to steam? Why is this weekend flash sale not applicable to steam? And also, what's the difference between buying a download copy here and buying it on steam? 1
GriffonBR Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Yes, that sucks a lot. I was waiting a sale on Steam to get the Mig 15 but even on sale on DCS Website there's no chance to buy it with the dollar costing almost R$ 4,00 ahead the Real. Come on ED, throw a bone on Steam for us from the third world lol. lanmancz Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 (edited) Why is this weekend flash sale not applicable to steam? And also, what's the difference between buying a download copy here and buying it on steam? Flash sales on ED store never apply to steam and as far as I know modules purchased on ED store cannot be activated on Steam. It makes sense really and personally I buy directly from ED. I hope they make more money that way. Plus you get faster updates I guess. But one thing caught my eye when I checked the ED store today - I see all modules at the full price. What's going on ? And then I noticed in the newsletter : does not apply to former Soviet Union countries Why is that ? PS: Personally I don't really mind as I pretty much have almost all DCS modules anyway (mostly purchased at full price) and the last few I don't have I'm not really interested in at all. But I wanted to send the link to friends that I'm infecting with the sim bug so they can grab some stuff on sale but I guess no luck this time. edit: Now, couple hours later, however I see all prices discounted as they should be in the sale so it does actually apply to former SU countries as well after all ? I guess it does. RoflSeal Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 There really is no reason to download DCS from steam. Especially since if you have standalone DCS, you can take advantage of both ED sales and Steam sales.

God knows I have a bunch of games I bought outside of steam that I keep forgetting exists cause it's not on by steam games list.

That way you will see it in your game list, you can launch DCS under steam and use all the steam overlay functions while in-game but still have technically a separate copy of DCS outside steam. grunf Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Initially I used the steam version, but once I realized that the sales are more frequent on ED store, I switched. :D As long as the shortcut sits on my desktop, I don't really care where the game actualy is...
BaconSarnie Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Im confused with this sale, I go to the relevant page, it shows the module I want with the discounted price shows. I select it and the other modules I want also showing discounted price. My basket however shows the full priced amount and when I go to checkout and pay It still shows the full price amount. Im not prepared to go all the way to the end of the process as I cant afford to spend $140 when it should only charge me $41.99. Chann3l Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 I was just about to ask this same question. First thing I did when I got the email was jump on the steam store. Got my answer though so thanks OP.
