In the next note on module development, let's talk about the features of air combat on the La-7 aircraft. As previously noted, the powerful ASh-82FN engine provides the Lavochkin with superiority in the main flight characteristics over opponents at altitudes up to 3,000 meters. Based on this, the main task of the La-7 pilot in air combat is to engage in combat at low altitudes, where they can maximize the advantages of their fighter. In the world of DCS, the Lavochkin's closest competitors are the Spitfire, Mustang, Focke-Wulf, and Messerschmitt. While the Mustang and Focke-Wulf can be easily outmaneuvered in turns, the Spitfire should be defeated in vertical maneuvers, utilizing high energy capabilities. The Messerschmitt is the closest competitor in terms of its characteristics. Fighting it is almost on equal terms and largely depends on the skill of the pilot. The most successful pilot who flew the La-7 in real life was the famous three-time Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Nikitovich Kozhedub, who had a total of more than 60 officially confirmed personal victories on La-5 and La-7 aircraft. According to his memories, Kozhedub achieved his victories primarily by striving to gain the initiative in battle. The renowned ace had the most suitable fighter to implement such tactics. Our team honored the memory of the outstanding pilot by recreating the livery of the aircraft on which I.N. Kozhedub fought. We have no doubt that the La-7 aircraft, with its introduction into the world of DCS, will make a significant contribution to the development of virtual air combat.18 points

DCS MOD TROUBLESHOOTING TIP #2 SWITCHES! Not sure if this is the correct name but below are the switches to turn weapons on and off to also include the damage model. So Rusty Disabled the MASS Area. Instead of disabling the entire area just turn the switch off by placing -- dashes next to the last entry. DCS will not read it if it's turned off. Or at least it shouldn't. -- { area_name = "KORMA_MA", area_arg = 92, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {28.8, 10.2, 0.0}, size = 1.5}}, All the other switches are for weapons. So for example if you see Korma_MA in the MASS area it should also be entered in the GT.DM area as well or will not work. GT.DM = { { area_name = "ZA_AA", area_arg = 80, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {-85.7, 2.0, 0.0}, size = 0.5}}, { area_name = "ZA_AB", area_arg = 81, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {-85.7, 2.0, 0.0}, size = 0.5}}, { area_name = "ZA_FA", area_arg = 82, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {-85.7, 2.0, 0.0}, size = 0.5}}, { area_name = "ZA_FA1", area_arg = 83, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {-85.7, 2.0, 0.0}, size = 0.5}}, { area_name = "COMMAND", area_arg = 84, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {-70.0, 2.0, 7.7}, size = 0.8}}, { area_name = "ZA_FRA", area_arg = 85, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {28.8, 10.2, 0.0}, size = 1.5}}, { area_name = "ZA_FRA2", area_arg = 86, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {28.8, 10.2, 0.0}, size = 1.5}}, { area_name = "ZA_HAR", area_arg = 87, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {28.8, 10.2, 0.0}, size = 1.5}}, { area_name = "CABIN", area_arg = 88, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {28.8, 10.2, 0.0}, size = 1.5}}, { area_name = "ZA_TA", area_arg = 89, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {28.8, 10.2, 0.0}, size = 1.5}}, { area_name = "ZA_DA", area_arg = 90, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {28.8, 10.2, 0.0}, size = 1.5}}, { area_name = "ZA_DA1", area_arg = 91, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {28.8, 10.2, 0.0}, size = 1.5}}, { area_name = "KORMA_MA", area_arg = 92, area_life = 55, area_fire = { pos = {28.8, 10.2, 0.0}, size = 1.5}}, } Today I will go through the entire Normandie script and clean it up. I will remove items that may be causing issues for some of you and release an update later today. Stay Tuned! Sorry Normandie caused so many issues for you all. With that said when I first started creating the mod I had issues with it appearing in the game as well. As a modder, you have to be thinking outside the box to figure out what's causing the issue. Well, I do know the word NORMANDIE is also the name of a map in DCS. So DCS will see that and that alone will cause issues. So when we create mods we have to be careful not to use names that are already entered in DCS. Just something to think about. Stay tuned for Version 1.0.2 released later today. Thanks for your patience! Admiral1896 points

You can not be happy about the amount of time it takes us to do these modules, that is fair and that is your opinion. We will not tell you what you should think is too long or not. That said, the lack of competitors has absolutely NOTHING to do with it. Perhaps if you look at it, the lack of competitors is because the length of time and complexity of development is so huge that a company like ED is hard to come by. This is leaving out all the valid delays that have happened over the last few years that were out of our control. So yes, you can say it's taking too long for you, but the suggestion we are dragging our feet because we can and want to is simply not fair and not true. Thanks5 points

I didn't think my release date would help, but I tried! I understand the need to ration your money for only a few modules at a time, most of us don't have unlimited money at the best of times. This is where patience and self-discipline about your purchases can be helpful. Save up for the Phantom, then set that money aside for when it DOES release. Don't expect super-discount sales in it's first year, expect to pay full price for a complex module. ORRRR... use the patience to wait for the first big sales, and strike while the price is low! All I know is, I'd bet money that HB would LOVE to give us all a perfect realistic release date and actually release on that date... and I'd bet more money that they KNOW they can't even give a good guess, because they might have a string of successes that speed it all up rapidly, or they might have a very long string of setbacks that end up demoralizing the whole crew... but more realistically they'll have a bit of a slog to go through, with some setbacks and some wonderful successes... and have no idea of a precise date. Revealing brand new cars all happens on precise dates because they want all the auto journalists to take pics and promote the new car/truck endlessly for that whole day... and it's doable because it was ready to display a week, or a month, or a year before they unveiled it. But Elon's "Starship" development has RARELY met any precise date, because as smart as he and the other engineers are, there's too many unquantifiable factors at play, not just performance mysteries while in flight, but also the Byzantine regulatory demands from EPA, FAA, local govts and probably 50 more regulatory agencies who must be made happy. IMO, combat flight simulations developments is more akin to developing "SpaceX Startship" than developing a new "concept car". Not just for Heatblur, but for the whole industry of retail edutainment "combat flight simulations" products. Considering the high efforts needed to produce these products, I think we get amazing value for our dollar even at full price.5 points

I'd like you guys to explain something to me. It was first known that the F-16 in this game, for whatever reason, could never perform a knife edge. It was as if it had less than half its expected body lifting force due to sideslip. Ok, so then I suppose it would make sense that the rudder authority would have to be fictionally enhanced a lot as to not appear anemic in yaw. But wait, this creates a problem. At high speeds and low altitudes, this can create an oscillation because the gains for yaw were calibrated to realistic rudder forces. A problem we had that suddenly went away one patch, but how? However, when it went away, the aircraft was still not able to perform knife edges. So now I come around and find this in one of the FM files. moment_of_inertia = { 12875.0, 85552.0, 75674.0, -1331.0},--Ix,Iy,Iz,Ixy -- Ix(roll) = 9496, Iy(pitch) = 55814, Iz(yaw) = 63100 [slug-ft2] --moment_of_inertia = { 4610.0, 48882.0, 52678.0, 0.0},--Ix,Iy,Iz,Ixy I found a copy of these numbers from a paper: A nonlinear dynamic inversion-based neurocontroller for unmanned combat aerial vehicles during aerial refuelling - Jimoh Pedro (PDF) A nonlinear dynamic inversion-based neurocontroller for unmanned combat aerial vehicles during aerial refuelling (researchgate.net) Which referenced these numbers sourced from: Morelli, E.A. (1998). Global nonlinear parametric modeling with application to F-16 aerodynamics, Technical report, Dynamics and Control Branch, NASA Langley Research Centre, Hampton, VA. https://zenodo.org/record/1262949/files/article.pdf Which does not actually contain these numbers or derivations of them. Does it mean they aren't legitimate numbers? Not necessarily, but an interesting bit of this is that Iz and Iy are swapped in value. I found another source of inertias from Morelli_Flight_Inertia_JGCD_Paper_final0921.pdf (nasa.gov) extracted from experimental data slug-ft2 kg-m2 Ixx-roll 9,496 12819 Iyy-pitch 55,814 75348 Izz-yaw 63,100 85185 Izz is always the highest but somehow pitch inertia in the file is highest. Is it possible the reason pitch seems so floppy is that it has its Inertia value swapped with yaw? Or is it possible there's a problem with filtering somewhere causing excessive delay of input? Perhaps with some programming, I could extract some comparative graphs through the export lua but I'm not 100% sure I have the skill for that. I just know this plane feels significantly less responsive compared to all the other aircraft we have and also struggles to change direction, like it's behind a 200 ms ping. Are the Inertias backwards? Are the control surfaces constrained to be slow? Are they stuck behind an aggressive filter? Have the gains been tampered with? White paper me bro4 points

I think that it will be wise to eventually bring in some Chinese-made long-range surface-to-air missile systems like the HQ-9 and HQ-16. Then to balance it out, you could someday consider building the MEADS missile system of MBDA and Lockheed Martin as well as some of the associated companion vehicles like the FMTV. Hey Guys. I have made some small updates to Normandie to include a new Collision Model, adjusted the Helicopter Landing Position, and corrected the speed. She was pushing 39 Knots in DCS. Now she's down to 29 knots. The new release is on Page #1 of the forum. #14. Enjoy!3 points

Thanks, Guys! CurrentHill knows better than anyone what it's like to create a mod and it works great for some and bad for others. Also, I think it's the systems were using. If we all were in an office environment you using the same systems and PCs. For example, Toan just stated the Mistral AA weapons work great for him. Well, they don't work for me anymore. Also, he stated the Exocet missile boosters release for him but guess what. They don't work for me! So Toan can also vouch for mods not working for him but working fine for me. Thank you all for your patience! So I cleaned up the Normandie. Sent it to Marroux and he stated it worked perfectly with no issues. I haven't heard from Pappy yet if it worked for him or not. With that said! I will release her here for you all to test. I have removed the MASS and Decoys and cleaned up the scripting. Please before adding the updated Version 1.0.2 to DCS. Please remove the older versions of Normandie and Aquitaine! Thanks. https://www.dropbox.com/s/rarmhrtfbo3ug2z/D651_Normandie.zip?dl=03 points

In the Russian forum pictures from the manual were posted and these times seem to be correct. also you can see from other post that the fast alignment is not intended for combat operations so 10-20min is the minimum for combat missions. But in the Russian area Dev mentioned that sometime in the future there might be something similar to a prealignment so that you don't have to wait 15-20 minutes for an exact alignment, when that will come nobody knows. GLOSSNASS is not connected to the PVI-800 in our KA-50III so it does not affect the alignment. The alignment is also so long because it is probably (correct me if you like) a part of the system must come to operating temperature.3 points

Howdy Gents, Thanks for those images, they are good enough I can make it work. @Elo I haven't seen Dino online in a long while. Long term I'll aim to setup a website or something to host all the files on for free, including a proper build log to follow along with. I'm at the point where I'm pretty much done with the frame so I'm happy to post the updated plans knowing it's correct. My next big job (outside of my own build) to allow people to get started is converting all the sketchup files to svg. This should allow for easy tool path conversion or printing on A0 at officeworks to make templates. Once I've done that I'll post it in this thread in the interim. I posted the sketchup model quite a few post back if you are chasing a starting point. Excluding the skin on the port side, a lot of bog and paint she's starting to take a really nice shape. Any thoughts on the paint scheme? I'm leaning towards a 2003-4 VF-103 CAG bird.3 points

DCS MOD TROUBLESHOOTING! So every time I create a mod there's always something I miss. It could be a comma, a period, or in most cases a misspelled word. Also, with the introduction of declared weapons, there's an even great chance you will miss something which will cause the mod to not appear in DCS. Then comes the fun part of figuring out what is causing the issue. A lot of trial and error until you figure it out. So with that said for those of you that can't get Normandie into the Game. Open the Entry.Lua file and disable all the sensor and weapons files by placing -- dash symbols in front of the dofile as shown below. Once the files have been disabled. Run DCS again to see if the mod appears in DCS. If it does. It means one of the weapons or the sensor file is bad. Then one by one remove -- the dash symbols and run DCS until you figure out which file is bad. Hope this helps those that are having issues with the mod appearing in DCS. -- sensors --dofile(current_mod_path.."/Database/Sensors/Aquitaine_sensors.lua") --Weapons --dofile(current_mod_path..'/Database/Weapons/D650_SYLVER_15.lua') --dofile(current_mod_path..'/Database/Weapons/D650_SYLVER_30.lua') --dofile(current_mod_path..'/Database/Weapons/D650_MM40B3.lua') --dofile(current_mod_path..'/Database/Weapons/D650_GunsAndAmmo.lua') --dofile(current_mod_path..'/Database/Weapons/D650_Decoy.lua')3 points

Huey seems to be one of the most popular dcs modules. I don't know how much revenue it gives ED anymore. But give its popularity I feel it needs an upgrade. Apperantly they're already working on fixing an engine thing. But I feel it needs a upgrade. High fidelity cockpit and externals. As well as stuff people have been asking for for years. Like troops in the back. Ability to have proper slicks with no pylons etc. I would be perfectly happy if this came with a payed upgrade like the KA-50 and A-10 got2 points

Yeah, it's a big problem! And, it seems like they have 0 intention of fixing it, wonder if this is what people have to look forward to with the F-15E? Would be nice if ED didn't support the eagle, until long running bugs like this were fixed for the customers who paid good money for the module! If not, I would worry that DCS will become "polluted" with broken, buggy payware modules. That may look hifi but are basically half developed cash grabs.2 points

A 5600X is a great option. Pretty cheap, certainly good enough, and you save solid $$$ for other parts, mainly the GPU. And going from a 1050 to a 3060ti, you'll see yuuuuuuge improvements. Great flying will ensue.2 points

This isn't quite right, there is a GPU overhead associated with reprojection, typically about 3-4ms on my machine if I turn it on. To achieve 45fps reprojection you need to add your appGPU frametime to those overhead and the resulting total needs to be less than the 22ms needed to hold 45fps. Therefore assuming 4ms overhead you need your appGPU to be <18ms otherwise it will drop to the 1/3rd refresh rate bracket (30hz). edit: 18ms is 55fps so your 50fps likely isn't enough to consistently hold the 45hz reprojection. Running at 30hz isn't actually bad, you're still getting the same smooth performance but you might see more artifacts (this is very hard to quantify).2 points

RAF 605 "Count of Warwick" Sqn pack, containing a generic livery (with fixed squadron code, UP, but dynamic airplane code and serial number), UP-O/HJ808, and UP-J/NS838, better known as Wag's "War Wagon". The latter is currently operated by the Flying Heritage Museum, and reference images of that aircraft were the primary source for this project. Features include: - Custom stencils, based off reference images (surprisingly, the IRL UP-J seems to have no markings for either fuel OR oil). - Intentional minor misalignment of the camo scheme, based off reference images. - Use of common folders, so despite being three liveries, it takes up only 50% more space than the generic livery by itself would. - Full custom roughmets. - Brush stroke effects on all four roundels, the fin flash, and the radio codes of UP-O and UP-J. - Not sure exactly how to describe it, but the effect you see on most airbrushed aircraft (including the War Wagon) where the very edge of the camo is a lot duller than the rest of it. It's not very visible from most angles, but it really pops when the lighting is right, and that's been recreated here. Available at https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3329763/ If there are issues with either the swastika kill markings and German law regarding those, or Popeye (presumably) being a copyrighted figure, I've also made a version that replaces the swastikas with Iron Crosses, and removes the Popeye nose art. If needed, I'm more than happy to make another version with either swastika kill markings but no Popeye, or Popeye but Iron Crosses, but it seemed excessive to make four separate uploads for a single competition. I appreciate the response but I understand all that. All I'm asking is, from someone who has actually sat in the pilot seat, what is generally the most accurate perspective for the pilot looking straight forward in the seat of those two images. How close are you essentially to the displays, how much do you see over the top of the panels, etc. etc. Nothing complicated.2 points
