  3. This is why ED is so reluctant to add things. They can't win. How many posts were there begging for addition of water so they could have carrier ops? And how many of those posts said "Just give us the land, it doesn't need any texture or anything"? And how many posts have there already been about how terrible the textures are and begging for them to be improved? I might actually fly from the carrier up occasionally, so it's not like I'm opposed to this addition, but adding any sort of texture (let alone satellite imagery) would bloat what is already a massive map size (and I like big area maps).

  4. Hey, I'm on the F-111C mod team. The project is still alive. We're just not going to be using Discord as a platform for now. Development is continuing, and we've made quite a lot of progress in the past couple months. Going forward we don't plan on posting anything about it until the EFM, cockpit, and external model ready. As you can understand, the F-111 is a complex aircraft, and it'll take our small team time to get it over the line. We've got some real heavy hitters on our team with a lot of professional experience, from aerospace, to systems coding, to modelling and animation. Most importantly, we all love the F-111. Here's one more screenshot, as a treat. Next time you hear from us, it'll be good news!

  9. The 2000 could not fly without its FBW, nor have the performance it has. It would be a Mirage III. I think it's actually the only good FBW model in DCS. Stick displacement = g-command moderated by aoa is perfectly illustrated and unlike the Fs, it actually trims out everything else for you and lets you bang around the envelope virtually care free. Cant say the same of F-16.

  10. Version 2.4.4 - Update - works around show-stopping DCS bug - 20250227 It was a splinter in my mind. Although I never experienced the bug myself I knew that people had run into it. And it was bad - literally show-stopping. It escaped me (and as a result bugged many others) for months. And still I never caught even a fleeting glimpse of it. And then, luckily, I received a mission that could re-produce the issue - so my thanks go to @DD_Friar who supplied me with a Miz that forced the bug out in the open. It turns out that the performance-killing bug is caused by a bug in DCS's trigger.action.removeMark() when invoked too soon after drawing a mark. Yeah, I'd never have found that by myself. So now Expansion (hopefully) runs full throttle on all servers and single-player machines like it always did on mine. I used the the past few weeks to upgrade the odd module (yes, cloneZones now sports a "maxCycles" attribute, as requested) -- and to finally bring "CESAR" to Syria. It's a lot meaner than CESAR Caucasus - so if you're a glutton for punishment, you'll love it. And if you want to study how I use DML to create missions, they are good study objects. All Changes: Documentation Main - Many changes and updates QuickRef - Many changes and updates Demos - smoke'em (update smoke zones) - colored smoke switcher (new) - Random Glory (update) - Reaper, man (update) Modules - cfxZones 4.5.3 - supports names for smoke colors - better support for random smoke color - cloneZones 2.6.0 - new "maxCycles" attribute - csarManager 4.3.0 - smoke extinguishes as soon pilot is evacuated - new 'keepSmoke' option to leave smoke on - dcsCommon 3.2.1 - markPointWithSmoke() supports smoke names - FARPZones 2.4.0 - work-around for killing DCS bug in removeMark() - heloTroops 4.2.3 - new "keepWait" attribute to manage orders in dropzone - new "setWait" attribute to manage orders in dropzone - ownedZones 2.5.0 - work-around for killing DCS bug in removeMark() - persistence 3.1.0 - new "validFor" attribute for better memory management - pulseFlags 2.0.4 - corrected a silly typo - reaper 1.3.0 - new "invisible" attribute that makes drone invisible to AI - smokeZones 3.0.0 - smoke can now be stopped immediately - suppors persistence Enjoy, -ch

  12. 21st February 2025 Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends, We are delighted to announce that our new DCS: East Afghanistan region is now available in the latest DCS update! You will also see some great improvements to the southwest region! Check out the launch trailer. This new area contains 10 new airfields, several large cities such as Kabul, and a massive amount of dramatic terrain for you to explore. The DCS: Afghanistan map has been improved throughout with higher quality textures, normal maps, updated airfields and urban areas, as well as a more precise terrain mesh. The addition of the eastern region increases the high-detail of this map to 2,290,164 Km2 and now expands to the Arabian Sea for carrier operations. Enjoy! Alongside our East Afghanistan terrain launch, the new DCS Update introduces improvements to the DCS Core, various modules and assets. Please find an overview of the most significant fixes and additions below and make sure you update to version DCS 2.9.13.6818 now. Thank you for your passion and support. Yours sincerely, Eagle Dynamics East Afghanistan Out Now! The next region of DCS: Afghanistan is now available: East Afghanistan! This new area leverages our latest map technology and lessons learned from previous terrains, including the Southwest region. The eastern region is characterised by its rugged, mountainous terrain, interspersed with agricultural areas around Bagram and along waterways. Kabul, the capital and largest city in Afghanistan, includes several points of interest such as hospitals, historical sites, monuments, and unique neighborhoods. The Eastern region also includes the urban areas of Bagram, Gardez, Jalalabad, and Khost and 10 highly-detailed airfields: • Bagram • Kabul • Jalalabad • Gardez • Khost • Sharana • Bamyan • Urgoon Heliport • Ghazni Heliport • Khost Heliport Along with the release of the Eastern region, the entire map offers improved surface textures, ground clutter, noise, and normal maps. We have also upgraded the transition between ground texture types and increased the visual quality of surfaces throughout. In the months ahead, we will continue to enhance the map’s performance and visual fidelity, as well as improving AI pathfinding. For carrier ops, the current update now expands to include the Arabian Gulf, albeit at a lower resolution. In parallel to continued improvement on the Southwest and Eastern regions, we now move our focus to North Afghanistan. New missions for DCS: Black Shark 3 and DCS: Flaming Cliffs 2024 have also been added for DCS: Afghanistan, enjoy! Flexible purchase options provide customers the choice of purchasing one or more of three regions of Afghanistan: Southwest, East and North. You can purchase DCS: Southwest Afghanistan and DCS: East Afghanistan for $29.99 each. Alternatively, you may purchase the entire DCS: Afghanistan map for the early access discounted price of $55.99. This will include all current and future regions and updates. DCS Update Development Progress DCS Core This week’s update saw numerous changes and improvements including AI aircraft being unable to react to radar-launched missiles outside of visual range if not equipped with an onboard radar warning receiver. The initial implementation of tactical turns when flying in a two-ship with an AI wingman has also been added, and AI aircraft now use enhanced lead pursuit for more timely rejoins. Various additional improvements have been made to the S-3B. The Mi-28 can now land on small helipads, and the MiG-31 damage model has been upgraded. Ground and naval AI also saw improvements with Chinese Assets pack ships. The HQ-7B short range SAM has received accuracy refinements, and artillery now fire at secondary targets again. Graphical and performance improvements to the DCS Core include the addition of both High and Low SSAO effect options and a number of shader compilation errors have been fixed. This update also saw important bug resolutions to the Mission Editor. The dedicated server saw certain options improved in addition to bug fixes. Numerous weapon improvements for both SAMs and Tomahawk were implemented, and magnetic north has been updated to better reflect current real world deviation. Eagle Dynamics Modules The DCS: F-16C Viper saw the following improvements: addition of a mouse click function on the throttle to move between OFF and IDLE; the Ground Moving Target game crash is now fixed; Dogfight Mode stuck with NO RAD indication is fixed; new parking brake and anti-skid control bindings added; pilot survivability improved. The DCS: F/A-18C continues to see enhancements such as adjustments to the AIM-9X tracking near gimbal limits; similar pilot damage modelling as the Viper, and several fixes including a PDLT crash in EXP mode; interface between the data link pod and the AGM-84 fixed; and AUTO bombing mode based on an OAP now fixed. Both of these aircraft and the DCS: F-5E also include air-to-air infrared-guided missile seekers being actively distracted by flares prior to missile launch. This makes pre-emptive flares effective when flying against these aircraft. AI aircraft saw a large number of behaviour and functional improvements. DCS: F-5E Remastered improvements include more correct radar display when powered off and refined gun dispersion. The DCS: L-39 Albatros saw fixes for certain clickable cockpit elements, while the Yak-52 control binding animation and auto start issues were fixed. WWII Warbirds such as the DCS: P-47D Thunderbolt and DCS: P-51D Mustang benefit from corrections to their engine performance and lighting systems, respectively. Third-Party Modules Magnitude 3, developers of the DCS: MiG-21bis, have fixed SPO-10 lights, while IndiaFoxtEcho has upgraded collision models, cockpit functionality, and gunsight operation for the DCS: MB-339A/PAN. Deka Ironwork Simulations brought loadout panel improvements to the DCS: JF-17F Thunder, solving mission editor freezes and refining data link text overlay. For a more detailed list of all the changes in this week’s DCS Update, please read the complete changelog. DCS: F-4E Phantom II by Heatblur, saw numerous bug fixes and mission improvements. DCS: Mirage F1 by Aerges also saw a large number of improvements to systems and input bindings. We hope you enjoy exploring the new East Afghanistan region and take advantage of the many improvements included in this update. As always, stay tuned for more news. Thank you again for your passion and support, Yours sincerely,

  17. There’s something that doesn’t add up for me when it comes to active flight simulator companies: they all avoid recreating the last great battle between air forces. The pinnacle of aerial combat—where the objective was in the air for both attackers and defenders… yet no one wants to open that can of worms. Both ED and its WWII-focused competitors prefer to skirt around it. In DCS, the map exists. It’s a paid map, but by now, it could be as free as the Marianas. I’m not talking about the Normandy map but the other one, which, for some strange reason, hasn’t been merged with Normandy. Once the "map issue" is resolved, I can’t quite understand why they’ve chosen to dive into such a technologically complex environment (in terms of software and hardware) instead of sticking to an already created setting (Map/Maps and Assets pack), where they would only need to focus on modeling iconic aircraft—planes that practically sell themselves since they exist in the public imagination and have tons of easily accessible information. There are even flyable models in countless collections and museums worldwide. If 99% of those who own the K-4 were asked to swap it for an E-3/E-4 or their Spit Mk.IX for a Mk.Ia with just four measly .30 Browning machine guns per wing—or even for a Hurricane Mk.Ia—they’d do it without hesitation. And most importantly, they’d pay for it if it were a "sine qua non" requirement (since, after all, this is a business). That was the success of Cliffs of Dover more than 15 years ago. If the limitation lies in the "complexity" of AI flight models… no problem! Just boost multiplayer: human pilot vs. human pilot. 95% of Cliffs of Dover simmers only wanted to experience firsthand what it was like to fly in a battlefield where, in a matter of seconds, a calm sky turned into a hornet’s nest, with up to 100 players on a server chasing each other in spirals toward the ground. I haven’t felt that sensation again since leaving that game. And if you connect any sunday to any WW2 server.... They're "walking deads": no hard feelings towards all gents that put their efforts on them. Flying military fighters as if they were Cessna 172s on a casual Sunday flight shouldn’t be the ultimate goal of a simulator that has the letter "C" for Combat in its name. And even now, after the release of the "PTOS PACK," that’s exactly what’s going to happen. I could understand it when the first modules came out over a decade ago, but at this point, it makes no sense. I also don’t buy the idea that some "third party" will come in to save the DCS world—that’s not their responsibility. In my opinion, flying a Hellcat against an "AI piloted Zero-Sen" doesn’t appeal to me beyond the "15-day trial." However, piloting within a squadron of SBD Dauntless or D3A VAL, locating an enemy fleet, and learning how to execute dive-bombing runs amidst a storm of flak and bullets? Now that interests me—even in single-player. If they listened more to their customers, I think they’d make better business decisions, and their audience would be happier—or at least less frustrated.

  23. 100% disagree with this logic. Having the same weather conditions across the entire map is nothing short of immersion breaking. Having fog simply dissipate is not a practical solution to many scenarios. I think at the very least they could split the map into 3/4 sections where fog and wind could be changed individually and blended in between. Never mind about the clouds which in real life would never be them same 150nm apart.

  25. Please make a browser feature for default liveries that we are able to select to download. There is a ton of space taken for a bunch of default liveries, especially if you don't fly those aircraft often. For example HB made 30GB of liveries for only 2 aircraft that are impossible to delete. I know many people that own almost every module, but only fly the same few modules and use the same livery every time. And for mission makers: if they had a liveries gallery that contains a high quality preview they can inform who is playing the mission what liveries to download. Or the community requests a livery to be added to the mission. Either that, or ED needs to enforce optimization requirements on module designers for things like liveries, so that we don't end up in a scenario where we have a 5GB aircraft packaged with 15GB of skins. TLDR: We don't need every single livery just to only use the same few, while we can save storage space.

  26. Not this particular uniform but that style of 1980s helmet as option would be great! And not only for the 1979/89 Soviet Afghanistan war, but also for the coming Berlin/Middle Europe Cold War 1.0 map: These helmets were worn (in red) for example by the Mi-24 crews of the East German Air Force. @II.JG1_Vonrd has done so absolutely nice skins of German HINDs of that era which only suffer from the wrong headgear (and he was one of the winners of the contest with his skins). What about a solution of an in-game choice like @Raffi75 suggested, @BIGNEWY @NineLine ?

  30. Custom F-14 Throttle Build “Realistic” & Functional My old first diy throttle went fubar so I have built a new custom F-14 throttle for DCS that brings a high level of realism and functionality to my sim setup. It’s designed to replicate the feel of the real Tomcat throttle while integrating custom features for smoother operation. Key Features: Dual Independent Throttles Provides precise control over both engines, just like in the real jet. Motorized Wingsweep Automatically moves to match the in-game position or allows manual input when disengaged. This prevents unwanted feedback loops while keeping it in sync with the aircraft. DCS-BIOS Integration Allows full synchronization with in-game controls, preventing conflicts between hardware and software inputs. Replicates the F-14 real throttle behavior for startup and afterburner engagement. Designed for durability and a realistic tactile feel, with smooth but firm movement on all controls. This throttle setup significantly improves immersion and control in the F-14. If anyone is interested in the build process or has questions about DCS-BIOS integration, feel free to ask! And the tacan

  33. No, it won't work because: No, this is completely dynamic. You need to be stirring the stick and you have to anticipate what your corrections will do. Lose a knot, nose drops, gain a knot, nose rises.

  34. No and yes. IRL, tanking on a straight path or tanking in a racetrack orbit is determined, scheduled and briefed before the flight. As far as I'm aware, tankers should always hold altitude during refueling. In DCS, tankers will follow their waypoint actions, and most tankers in DCS are set up to fly a racetrack between 2 waypoints. The angle of bank during the racetrack turns should (since a few updates ago) be a solid 30 degrees, regardless of tanking or not. As far as I'm aware, pilots won't get a heads-up from tankers in real life either before the tanker enters a turn, though the waypoint/location where such a turn is initiated may be known to the pilot of the receiver. It's up to mission designers to let pilots know about such details, but trained pilots won't really care whether or not the tanker is banking or not, as long as it's smooth. Not just for giggles, they demonstrated the B-52's capability to receive fuel at absurd tanker bank angles somewhere around 60ish degrees or so. That is a picture book case of pilot induced oscillation. When you look at the tanker in the external view or in external tools like Tacview, it is indeed rock solid. You are trying to maneuver your aircraft in 4 axis (pitch, roll, yaw, thrust) in order to be in a box roughly 5m by 5m by 5m (*) in size, yet you oscillate around 3 of those axis by multiples of that box. (*) Actually I'm not sure how big the boom's constraints are; might be a lot less, might be a bit more. In either case, it's not a whole lot of leeway. Aerial refueling is formation flying first and foremost. I would recommend to take a step back, learn the basics of formation flying first and only then come back to aerial refueling. Otherwise it's like taking a formula one racer and trying to compete with the world champion after successfully not crashing 3 laps in a row - it's not technically impossible, but very unlikely to yield a positive result without hours upon hours upon hours of training. No one can. There is no one throttle setting that will get you to match the tanker's speed. Look at any documentary of aerobatics teams. Any pilot flying formation on another aircraft will move stick and throttle all the time. In most cases, the inputs will actually seem pretty big. But pilots will know to counter any input they make. Basically, it's a never-ending series of corrections and counter-corrections that - from the outside - look perfectly stable. You're not the first virtual pilot to struggle with AAR, and you won't be the last. There are dozens of tips that pilots use. Some tips work well for certain pilots, some work well for others. The forum should hold many of them. More than anything, AAR comes down to practice. At some point it'll just click.

  38. I can totally sympathise. I love the Mirage 2000 but the flying always felt a bit on rails. It's probably modelled super accurately, and the M2K is meant to have one of the best fly-by-wire controls of that generation (allegedly much better than the F-16), but sometimes you want to feel the air, and the F1 is perfect for it. You are in for a treat. She handles beautifully

  40. Absolutely agreed. It would also include the North German Plain which was identified as a significant probable axis of advance in the event of the Cold War going hot (and includes ports as relevant targets), not to mention airbases in the North (such as Damgarten (773 IAP - we already have a MiG-21bis and a 9.12 MiG-29) and Wittmundhafen (JG 71 - we've got JG 71 liveries for the F-4E, we're getting an F-104G of some description)). EDIT: The current La Combattante IIa is depicted as a late FRG Type 148 Tiger, so depending on how much water we get, that vessel would be right at home (if only it could get MM38 Exocet Block 1). It may also enable carrier-based aviation and anti-shipping missions in general and we are getting a Luftwaffe Tornado with Kormoran (so right at home), not sure about Aerges F-104G, though it would be nice to depict Marineflieger units.

That fix plus a few other changes are now being testing, and I might have to adjust a few other things. Hopefully Next weekend, or if I can get remote access from the Hotelli, mid-week.
