  1. The Mi-24 is unquestionably the fastest chopper in the game, but I haven't done acceleration tests like that. Shouldn't be a surprise that the Ka-50 wins it, it's a very responsive little chopper.
  2. Agreed on sounds being excellent.
  3. Flight: She's fast, climbs well and is very stable in gun and rocket attacks. Hovering attacks are not possible due to how high the nose must be in order to hover. VRS is a concern like with the Mi-8. Agility is good, being slightly worse than the Mi-8 but vastly superior to the UH-1. Overall handling excellent. Weapons: Limited selection at the moment but they work. Stuff: 2 training missions are included, a cold start tutorial and ATGM tutorial. They do what they are supposed to. Quick start guide is bare bones and lacks even a mention of countermeasures and radios. Graphics and Sound: Both are excellent, though most people (me included) see a significant drop in FPS compared to most other aircraft when in the cockpit. Petro: He's a truly lousy pilot but a satisfactory missile guider. His aim when flying straight at a target is good as long as the aircraft is steady. Angled shots and maneuvering throw him off easily.
  4. Everywhere I've flown on the Syria map has it go black when zoomed in. The Caucuses seems to work fine. I haven't tried NTTR or Persian Gulf yet.
  5. I'm in the process of upgrading my various controllers and am looking for a top notch set of pedals. Currently I'm using a Saitek X-55 HOTAS and CH Pro Pedals. I've already decided to replace the X-55 with the WinWing F-18 HOTAS setup (not the Orion) and while that is a straight forwards choice, I have absolutely no idea what's available off the shelf in the US that's worth getting when it comes to pedals. Obviously Logitech and TM are around, but I'm hoping there is something better. It does need to be off the shelf and not some garage side job thing that are made to order and take months to deliver. Last time I looked into it I think MFG Crosswinds were the recommended ones, but that was a garage operation at the time. Has that changed? Are they still the best out there? I'm looking for generic pedals with toe brakes that are comfortable to use with a normal office chair and desk. I fly everything from biplanes in Flying Circus to choppers to the modern jets in DCS. Edit: Looks like MFG is a proper manufacturer now and it also looks like TM no longer just offers some junk plastic pedals. The TPR's look interesting, anyone have some competing options I should look at or thoughts on the TPR's?
  6. Seems to be standard for all aircraft that have separated cockpits like the Mi-24, F-14, etc but this restriction isn't present in combined ones (anything side by side) such as the Mi-8 and Huey.
  7. Signal flares don't work against missiles in any of the other aircraft I've tried them in (Ka-50, MiG-15, MiG-19). That said, you can bind the controls. I have them working from the backseat.
  8. I did notice I could have it target kind of like the HMS in the Ka-50 (select a point on ground and it tracks that) but that's pretty inaccurate without the ability to fine tune. I also couldn't figure out away to actually launch the missile. I suspect that's a keybinding issue. Thankfully I was able to find a work around for the flares and get those working from the back seat. But yeah, there is an option in the editor for each Hind spawned for "simplified AI" and that eliminates nearly all functionality other than turning on the weapons system.
  9. Was just on 104th (been ages since I went there). They had it set so you couldn't hop seats and also disabled petrovich. Needless to say, having only guns and rockets functional as a result wasn't terribly effective.
  10. My experience so far is the bot needs the chopper very steady to hit anything. Any jerkiness even if flying straight at the target thows him off. I haven't properly tested turning away from the target then holding steady yet.
  11. The hover and low speed indicator seems to show all movement relative to North regardless of the direction the chopper is pointing. Anyone know if there is a switch somewhere I need to flip or is that a bug? For reference, I'm talking about this (from manual):
  12. I've noticed the autopilot doing some strange trimming and if you hop to the front seat petrovich will go completely nuts with trimming the thing to extremes. Try resetting trim to see if that solves it. I haven't had your particular problem though, so I'm just guessing at a solution.
  13. Only tested on the syria map but I'm down from about 60 fps in my usual test mission to around 40-45 in VR. I resaved the mission. Could be either the map or the cockpit, though going external view bumps FPS back up to 60 and the GPU isn't maxed anymore (I run a 60 Hz cap in VR). My guess is it's rendering 2 cockpits at once and that's dragging things down, though I don't have this problem with the HInd or Huey and they have two seats as well.
  14. For the Reverb G2 you just need the headset and a monster PC. There is also a bit of software to install but it's free. Process for setup is explained in the directions but a basic overview to get it working with DCS is as follows: 1) Plug in headset 2) Follow prompts to install Windows Mixed Reality 3) Continue following prompts to configure the headset 4) Install Steam if you don't already have it somehow. 5) Install SteamVR 6) Install Steam Windows Mixed Reality 7) Launch DCS, go to settings and turn on VR. Now you can play DCS in VR. If you opt for the Index, you'll have to setup tracking pucks but you get to skip the WMR and Steam WMR install steps.
  15. Do those cards work with DCS, trigen? I would stick with mainstream consumer devices for the sake of it actually working unless someone can confirm those work. For me, I answered this question with the HP Reverb G2 a few weeks ago. The index seems the better option for room scale stuff but for flight sims, resolution is everything and the Reverb G2 is the clear winner. It does require a monster PC to run, my 2080 Super is not remotely close to being able to run it at native resolution at even a paltry 45 fps. I set steamVR to the device's physical resolution (roughly 2/3rds the "native" resolution) and have tried locking it at 60 fps. That has worked pretty well for me and is still much clearer than the Rift S it replaces.
  16. You can disable the mouse disabling in windows settings: Then go to "Headset display" tab, scroll to the bottom and change the boxed setting to manual. You may still need to alt tab to give DCS focus sometimes, depends on how you start DCS.
  17. I'm running a Reverb G2, it takes a bit of setting up and has layers of software stacked on top of each other, but it does work well once all that is taken care of. It also requires some tinkering as no PC can possibly come close to running it at native resolution (double physical resolution for some reason). Clarity is superb and while it doesn't have the best controllers, for me they are better than my Rift S or Rift CV1. I have ordinary sized man hands I think and the newer Facebook controllers are just a bit too small for me. Tracking quality is fine and the control layout is virtually identical to Facebook controllers. I have noticed some games require some custom control setups though as they get marked as WMR controllers and expect a non-existent track pad. Comfort of the G2 is excellent. Out of the Rift CV1, Rift S, Quest 1, Samsung Odyssey (original) and Reverb G2, the Reverb G2 is by far the most comfortable, though the Quest is pretty nice too. For seated games, I think the Reverb G2 is the clear winner right now even ignoring price. For room scale stuff using the controllers, it's still good but does require tinkering with control mappings in some games. It's also worth noting that the Reverb G2 and Index use the exact same off ear headphones, so audio quality should be identical. Audio is usable but does fall short of a decent set of headphones ($100 USD). The headset is not easily removed and so this is a case of you get what you get. They are good enough not to bother me though. The Rift S and Quests use the most awful speakers known to man and so are virtually unusable without slapping headphones over them. On the bright side that's an easy thing to do.
  18. I remember the AI shooting with random inaccuracy from the perfect trajectory in a certain WW2 flight sim released in 2001, it was pretty hilarious. They would aim on the perfect trajectory and laser beam an arc, 1m short or 90 degrees off in the wrong direction, once again with perfect tracking not counting the offset. I understand these sound like simple requests, but they really aren't. I would like to see the AI improved in general but I don't think there are any quick fixes, at least none that would be an actual improvement. This is a core game engine rework we are talking about, and for me the higher priority item is updating the game engine to use our modern 12-16 thread CPU's instead of being optimized for a Pentium 4. Imp's idea of improving the mission editor might actually be a good option. ED could add some template type scripts and other similar things without completely redesigning anything. Those are more straight additions rather than modifying existing items (which may require modifying everything that references them, and references the references, etc). With all of that said, I don't think the AI is the problem you're making it out to be. Done plenty of Huey and Hip missions and survived against infantry and other soft targets. You just can't expect them to go head on with a tank division right now. But we aren't talking about a transport chopper., the Hind should be able to go after tanks much like the Hokum currently. The only restriction is it will be limited to 8 tank kills per arming instead of 12. Is that really such a big deal?
  19. Buzz around an airbase on the Syria map for a bit with some targets to get a feel for the chopper, weapons and startup. After that hop into an unrestricted MP server and try it out in the world of Hornets, Vipers and FC3 planes. I expect it will go fairly well tbh.
  20. Honestly, massive AI changes are not realistic expectation or request at this stage. For right now it is what it is. I do hope they redesign the AI at some point but that's likely a long ways off. I don't see it as the massive problem for the Hind as a few people in this thread though. I think the Hind will do just fine in the game as it is.
  21. I don't doubt it, NVG's aren't magical devices that let you see in total darkness. Early models in particular often required IR illuminators with very limited range. Then there is the issue of being able to see instruments and depth perception. Most NVG's until very recently were monoculars.
  22. There is absolutely nothing stopping a pilot from throwing on some infantry type nvg's in any aircraft ever made save for their finances or what they are issued. How useful such NVG's would be is another matter. This does fall into the category of doctrine vs possibility. Officially the Mi-8's bomb selection is limited to a few Soviet designed bombs, in reality the Syrian airforce has been rolling 55 gallon oil drums (and other random stuff) filled with explosives out the cargo doors for a while. Similarly I'm sure more than a few pilots around the world with legacy aircraft are breaking out ye old handheld GPS (or phone) for navigational assistance. I'm not opposed to including such crew workarounds in aircraft but also see why they generally aren't.
  23. Agreed with Northstar, for me the most important skins are present day Syria and Russia, Georgia, Ukraine and 1980's Iraq should also be high priorities but should be secondary. Beyond that I'll take as many as we can get, including some of the weird airshow ones. But Syria and Russia really ought to come first. We have a map where this exact model of aircraft has been in combat use for years, that is the most logical starting point. It would be odd if they didn't do it that way, like releasing a P-38 for use on the Normandy map... with a Japanese skin.
  24. I don't see how it's a new role. The Hind is an attack helicopter, just design missions like you would for the Ka-50, A-10, Viggen or Harrier.
  25. I think the SPO-10 will be sufficient for radar threats from a defensive standpoint but something fancier would be nice if going out to actively hunt SAM/EWR sites. The real problem is going to be IR missiles and the occasional laser guided ATGM. That said, I think radar threats are worse than laser threats in DCS, so I'll take the SPO-10 over the Ka-50's laser warning system any day.
