  1. I started this topic to track and discuss challenges with getting the best performance out of the system. I usually test each setting a couple of times. 27-1-2025 Nvidia 571.96 DLSS 4.0 Installed the new drivers. 25-1-2025 Adjusted GPU Overclock Increased CPU PBO Scalar and reduced some of the GPU overclock to further increase fps and frametimes. Time will tell if it also stays stable on the MP-servers. 18-1-2025 Clean W10 Complete reinstall of W10 returned another 5fps and better frametimes. Over the years the system got bloated with all sorts of traces from old hardware that I upgraded (2x GPU and CPU) and software that I tried and not fully removed. The system is snappy and clean again! I considered W11, but there are too many bad stories out there, no clear advantage for AMD and GUI modifications with taskbar etc W10 is easier. The only thing I still notice is that it seems that when I hit the FPS limit some sort of trouble in FPS and frametimes appears. When I stay a bit below 90, like 88fps, it is more stable. 27-12-2024 Current Overclock settings 64GB ----- EXPO: ON (timings default as stated on the DIMMS) 9800X3D ----- Turbo Game Mode: ON PBO: +200 Curve Optimizer: -20, FCLK Infinity Fabric: 2200 UCLK DIV1 Mode: UCLK=MEMCLK, SCALAR 10X 4090 ----- Core Voltage: +100 Core Clock: +120Mhz Memory Clock: +900Mhz, Fan: Power Limit 133%, Temp Limit 84. This GPU overclock is stable and gives me 4-5 extra FPS, even when i am CPU bound. My setup Windows 10 - latest version - Windows 11 will not happen until I will get serious latency advantages. Motherboard: ROG STRIX X870E-E Gaming WIFI Systemboard VR Headset: Varjo Aero SSD for DCS and Windows, separated DCS Settings Most are set to the max. SSS, Secondary Shadows, SSAO, SSLR are disabled; they do not bring much visually. Visibility Range Extreme. I have Visible Range set to High. Increasing this further is not bringing much visual improvement and really takes away performance. MSAA Mask Size 0.42 is my sweetspot. Testing Setup and approach My Windows has been heavily tweaked and optimized and I am currently still running the same Windows I started with 5 years ago. I upgraded my systemboard, CPU and GPU a couple of times but did not reinstall Windows. I think at certain moments in the past I even went too far with tweaking and should have dialed back and better register what I was doing. So a clean install will be somewhere in the near future because I am certain I have left quite some performance on the table. For the basic quick test of setting adjustments or hardware/software updates I start a the default A-10C mission Runway Startup on the Marianas Map. I use Marianas because this mission is quite demanding and quite stable almost from the start with AI not doing much. I let it run a couple of times for 20 seconds and track the performance with CapFrameX to calculate the average FPS, 1% and 0.2% lows of the runs. Many other missions give me 90FPS, so adjusting settings with such missions will not give me noticeable visible differences. If I want to visually see the performance I open up the the FPS overlay inside DCS. I sometimes also open up the new XRFrameTools application to visualize my frametimes. Once a setting looks pretty okay I log into our Wing's Multiplayer server, startup OBS recording and give it a spin to see how it goes. I usually get 90FPS flat in this setup, while running OBS recording. Testing log From now on I will start adding my complete testing logs to this main posting. Where relevant I will add charts to visualize the difference between certain options. Certain tests were eye-openers. It was/is a dreadful process going through all the settings and quite a few settings were insignificant in my case. Frame Times, average FPS, 1% and 0.2% Lows My main goal is to find the ones that will bring more stability (reduction of intrusive stutters) and performance (increase of FPS/frametimes). Sometimes it is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Seeing the settings that made a difference might bring quick wins to others as well. Overall the average FPS is not improving that much by all the tweaking, it is easy though to screw up your system and reduce FPS. But once the FPS are pretty decent it is hard to get substantial improvements. My biggest wins are with the 1% and 0.2% lows, reducing these give a much better overall experience than to have 1-2 more average FPS. The overall FPS can be high, but when you have a few microstutters here and there it is very annoying and for me breaks the immersion in VR. Caution Please be careful, not all what works for me might work for you. Do everything at your own risk. I had some crashes, especially with the overclocking, so always make backups and restore points. I also don't have my overclock software start automatically anymore when tweaking, because that also caused an issue once causing me to keep rebooting into a crashing configuration. null null null
  2. This issue was experienced in MT in the latest Open Beta build. Cold started the F-16 in the Gray Flag PG server. I switched the aircraft to A-A on the ICP while on the ground and the game completely froze. I asked my wingman to do the same (same circumstances), and the game froze for him as well. Steps to replicate the problem: 1. Start jet from cold in a multiplayer server with multi-threading 2. Enter A-A from the ICP (on ground FCR/datalink -on) The problem was able to replicate 70% of the time in MT with 3 different users making multiple attempts. The problem did not exist when tested in Single Thread gameplay.
  3. Hey! I have an Index and a Quest 2. I usually play DCS in my Index. Using the regular Beta client, this still works absolutely fine. However, if I try and set the MT version to launch in VR mode, it completely refuses to open in Steam VR on my Index. Instead it keeps opening Oculus Home (even though my Quest isn't plugged in or turned on) and the game still just keeps running in 2D. If I plug in my Quest 2 and turn it on, it will happily launch right into the Quest in VR mode but I'd much rather use my Index (comfort and FoV). I saw some comments about Skate zilla's tool (which I'd never heard of until now) but alas, that isn't helping me either as it appears you choose a build by selecting the parent folder for the build, rather than the bin folder containing the .exe. I also tried opening Steam VR first, then launching the MT client, to no avail. Does anyone know a workaround for this? It's super challenging even googling for help on this as the search terms are always so broad. Thanks. Ps. I'm an absolute novice with DCS - I only play it every now and then so go easy on me with the nomenclature. I'll likely need help with context if there are any super technical answers.   4. Please note : from DCS 2.9.8.1107 both bin and mt-bin folders contain Multithreading. Single threaded DCS is now legacy and removed from DCS. DCS Multithreading F.A.Q Users who want to test the new multithreading version of DCS can do so by following the steps described below. Multithreading contains some known issues, but we will gladly receive reports. Please make reports as full and clear as possible that are reproducible. Also, please send crash information using the automatic send-crash tool, if possible. Launching Multithreading DCS For the standalone version from our eShop DCS: You can find the new folder "bin-mt" in your DCS / DCS Open Beta main root folder where you have installed DCS. i.e. "D:\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\". To launch the multithreading version, navigate to the "bin-mt" folder and launch DCS.exe from it. i.e. "D:\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\bin-mt\DCS.exe". For your convenience, you may want to create a shortcut for "D:\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\bin-mt\DCS.exe" on your desktop. Be advised that the DCS launch shortcut that is automatically created on your desktop after DCS installation will launch the DCS updater from i.e. "D:\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\bin\DCS_updater.exe". You may have gotten used to the process where you launch DCS and it checks for available updates before launching the game. If you make a shortcut for the multithreading version (i.e. "D:\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\bin-mt\DCS.exe") then this shortcut will launch DCS, and it will not check for updates before launching the game. For STEAM users: Use the Play MT Preview in launch options. To do so, right click on DCS World Steam Edition in Steam and select PLAY; you should see the below pop-up. What is multithreading (MT)? MT is a programming technique that allows multiple threads to exist within the context of a single process. A thread is an independent path of execution within a program, and MT allows a program to perform multiple tasks concurrently, improving its performance and responsiveness. However, MT also introduces some complexities, such as thread synchronization and resource sharing, which must be carefully managed to avoid issues such as race conditions and deadlocks. Why am I seeing no to little performance gain? There are several reasons that could account for this. One of the most common reasons for lower-than-expected performance gains is being GPU limited. Whereas MT can greatly improve CPU efficiency and resulting performance, most of the graphical rendering elements are still reliant on the graphics card. To check this, play a mission and press Right Control + Pause at the same time to display your performance Frame Per Second (FPS) and rendering information. If it indicated GPU BOUND, your graphics card is holding back the maximum possible frame rate that the CPU can provide. MT is most effective in large missions with many units. In small missions with a limited number of units, CPU calculations are not a gating performance limit. As such, you may not see much of an MT performance gain in small missions. Older CPUs will not benefit as much from MT as more modern CPUs with a greater number of cores/threads. Please be sure that you are using the current Open Beta and that you are using the DCS.exe from the Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\bin-mt\ folder if using the standalone version. About half of P-cores are dedicated for the graphics needs. Currently the rendering pool scales up to 16 threads on P-cores (1 core = 2 threads). The other P-cores are used by the main logic thread, sound engine threads, and the auxiliary thread pool that occupy all available space. E-cores are used only by the resources streaming pool that has no limits (1 core = 1 thread). Will VR and flatscreen have an equal performance improvement? MT is agnostic between a 2D monitor and VR. Both will see the same proportion of improvement. Note that VR is in general more demanding so you will see lower FPS than flatscreen performance given the higher rendering overhead. Will performance be improved for people currently bottlenecked by their GPU? MT may not help with performance if you have a GPU bottleneck. This is because the GPU is responsible for rendering and processing graphics, and it operates independently of the CPU. So MT may not directly improve GPU performance, but it can help to improve overall application performance by offloading non-GPU related tasks to separate CPU threads. Are there any downsides to MT if I have a CPU with few cores (Like an old quad core)? While MT can improve performance on a CPU with multiple cores, it may not provide significant benefits on a CPU with few cores. In fact, it could even lead to decreased performance in some cases. Will the dedicated server also be multithreading? Currently, the dedicated server is ST. MT dedicated server should behave exactly like ST one including performance because the game logic is still running on a single thread. If you have issues with performance or anything else, please make detailed reports for us to review. Will I be able to play on MT servers/large missions that I couldn't before? You should see improvement in larger missions, but mission designers should still consider unit count in any mission they create. Overloading a multiplayer mission with units will result in loss of performance. Will MT and Single Thread (ST) be updated separately or updated at the same time? You can update DCS in the usual way. Can MT and ST clients join the same server? Yes, MT and ST users can play on the same server. Should I enable HT / SMT in my motherboard BIOS? Currently, users with more than 32 threads should disable HT/SMT, but for everyone else we recommend enabling HT/SMT.   6. Hi, Every time when I attempt to start multithreaded DCS with steamVR (--force_enable_VR --force_steam_VR) it crashes on loading to main menu. With OpenXR no crashes. I usually play with reprojection and 180% SteamVR resolution (1944x2424 per eye). OpenXR is too stuttery even with hiher FPS. I run DCS on i7 8700K, 1080TI, 32GB, SSD, Odyssey+.   7. So I have an 11700F in a pre built pc (judge away) been fighting bugs in DCS VR since inception but finally got the base game (I play on standalone and mostly pve on base maps). Downloaded multithread beta and did some testing with tracks between MT and OG style threading. On MT, with the in game FPS counter, it says it's CPU capped, however, I get no bottleneck notifier in single thread. Frame difference between the two is 3-5FPS but inconsistently. Any ideas other than a new CPU and MOBO??? Full specs in comments- help me find the missing frames please!!! I did some additional testing unfortunately im not smart enough to track logs or explain this but I'll try. Capped at 45fps in Quest software, I can consistently get 35-40fps in Single thread by turning basically everything down to low and a couple items to medium. However, same exact settings in MT, I still get wild fluctuations from 22fps to mayyyybe 32 was the highest I saw. The only explanation I have for this is that my single thread game is installed to the nvme and multithread beta is installed on an external USB 3.0 ssd. I MAY have answered my own question but im coming to the pros seeking advice and correction if I haven't. I'm not looking for wild 120fps on the oculus, just a good balance of being able to read DDIs and go from being heads down in the cockpit to heads up without frame drop or hitching that causes me to miss things. My tests were done using a low level track about 60sec long on an empty caucuses map in the F18, and similar results were duplicated in the uh1h. Tested with 12700KF (no overclock, HT/SMT ON) with RTX4090 and VR (Hp reverb G2, 100% resolution, opencomposite, openXR toolkit) Windows 11 last version , bios and drivers fully updated Using No-MT version everything goes perfect, AIDA64 shows load on some P-Core but no E-Cores (first image). Using MT version I see load on all E-Cores and a single thread on one P-Core at 100% (second and third images). Shouldn't all threads run over P-cores? In both cases GPU load is 91%-92%. Comparing performance between two versions, I've noticed more stuttering on MT version and noticeable less smooth. FPS are the same 60-70fps but Frame time get worse (last two attached images). Edited: On MT version I've changed the affinity of DCS.exe to force using only P-Cores, using task administrator. Then the E-Cores load dissapears and there are more threads running over P-Cores, BUT no performance improvement, frame time problem still there. Edited 2: I've removed github OpenComposite and then force to use internal openxr with " --force_enable_VR --force_OpenXR", in MT and no-MT versions. Same results. No MT version is smoother than MT in VR, foer example when making fast turns at very low altitude near cities forcing all scenery move many objects fast.

This is an intermittent problem however it has existed before the latest Open Beta patch (DCS 2.8.3.37556) and is not module specific.   15. Hi all. I'm experiencing something puzzling that most other people I know aren't. Multithreaded exe looks a lot worse for me with same graphics settings. No antialiasing seem to be applied with lots of jaggies, and textures look a lot more low res, especially in the distance. Effects such as raindrop on canopy look pixelated. Changing settings/restarting didn't seem to help. Things look as good as they always did if I go back to non-MT exe.

  19. Hello, I have an i7 8700k and with MT I am getting lower frames than before with all aircraft in same settings. FPS indicators say CPU bottlenecking with around 20% of the cpu being utilized.   20. No MT plus SSAA 2x at 1080p resolution, vsync on. With MT plus SSAA 2x at 1080p resolution, vsync on With MT plus no SSAA 2x at 4k resolution via DSR, vsync on. You can see that the FPS drops. So it should be with SSAA because SSAA and DSR have practically the same performance. Remembering that the DCS with MT I had a gain of approximately 10FPS in that same mission. DCS without MT, vsync off. DCS with MT, vsync off.

My device: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H GPU: RTX3070 headset: oculus rifts I tried on instant flight, the MT preview caused more lagging and fps drops more frequently, and it also limits my fov I tried another headset which was meta quest2, and it's even worse, the fps dropped to 7 on the ground and totally unplayable dcs.log MT.trk dxdiag.txt

I get less FPS with MT in VR and more FPS with MT Non-VR - Game Performance Bugs - ED Forums (dcs.world), seeing little to no effect from the MT-update. I've tried to troubleshoot but no positive results so far. -fxo and metashaders deleted after every update -Removed all mods in the "Saved games" folder and then repaired DCS.   24. I am using pico 4 with virtual desktop and openxr toolkit and am having consistent crashes when trying to use MT and sometimes with ST. I had some similar issues with a rift s but less frequent. I have deleted shaders etc several times and have done a slow repair. I have also tried running with and without "force VR" etc., and through "injecting" the game in VD.
