Which version? I am running Studio Driver 472.39. Which latest Studio Driver. Latest, for my rig, Game Ready Driver is 496.49, has problems in Houdini, Maya, and OpenGL.

496.49 it is

ED needs to kill , or make it an option, water transparency. At scales DCS operates, seawater has no transparency. We should not be able to see hull below waterline. Seawater also has no need to reflect. Normally seawater turbidity breaks up reflections at macroscales. Water only HDR light and HDR environment reflection with Fresnel falloff. Transparencies, reflections, just suck up FPS.

they are identical now, it would be a pointless exercise, only differences would likely be in the saved games folder

@BIGNEWYit wasnt.

I went ahead and downloaded the stable update. General performance accross missions with no change and identical settings between beta and open and identical stock saved games folders (carried over form the old stable) etc has resulted in a consistent 8-10fps INCREASE across the board.

Still about 10fps short of the old stable but now on par if not slightly over with the 2.7.6 Beta.

So somat is different or (uneducated and wild speculation) sommat is misfiring within the update that isnt being picked up with a repair.

That is interesting!

I completely removed DCS (Manually) and reinstalled the Beta. This seemed to have have improved FPS too.

And i get the feeling that setting Visible range from LOW to Ultimate (in VR) had a positive effect too. No proper test results available, but worth the try in the category 'more shadows is more performance'.

Hey guys, I‘m going to make a fresh install of dcs 2.7.6 beta on my old rig (4790K, 1080ti, 16GB ram, 1080p) for a baseline and am planning on updating then to 2.7.7 to see if there is any change.

Can somebody guide me on how to prevent dcs from installing all my maps and modules? I‘d like to install only the core game and one map and aircraft.

Thx

Well, if it's a fresh install on another PC, after logging in, you will probably see red marker on module manager icon indicating there's stuff which can be installed, but at that point you will still have only a barebones DCSW package content available to play.

ok, I‘ll give it a try…

Can you give me a short howto on how to install an old version? I‘m a little lost rn

By command line, or if you want to go easier on yourself, get Skatezilla's updater/launcer. Then you just enter the version you want. Get the number from the ED site, change log page. And you enter the number and off you go.

If FPS is gained from a fresh install then there must be a way to define the problem of losing that FPS when we upgraded from 2.7.6 to 2.7.7.
I'm septical about this solution for now.

Ok, so I renamed the folder in saved games and changed my shadow settings from flat to low (because it's faster now). This brought my framerates to acceptable ranges, even though still probably lower than in 2.7.6 (can't check).

Also with texture settings, high feels smoother than medium and about equal to low in external view. At this point, it might actually be worth just checking individual settings to see if higher is faster.

Didn’t say it was a solution. I simply reported what occurred.

It may work for some or for no one.

Just figured it was something to try instead of pontificating about shit on a stick as I normally do.

I probably have THE slowest machine.  2.5.5 was about 20fps, then 2.5.6 12fps and a clean install of 2.7.7 is now at 9fps.  All SP same simple FC3 mission start at 4000 ft.
ALL settings as low as possible/off.  1280x768 res (but on a fast 144hz monitor - don't ask).  Technically it shouldn't even run on this laptop.

Ok ya I had deleted beta and full reinstall of stable.  Initial use was way worse, crazy stutters, high cpu and gpu but low low fps, sound stutters.  Brand new install, to fix had to delete saved games dcs folder then operates normal…..weird.  But no magical fps return from pre patch.

I got my fps back doing the above... ultimately had to settle for 70% SteamVR SS. But pit still readable.

Ok, so I did the following.

I dusted off my previous rig (4790K, 1080ti, 16GB Ram, 1080p) and made a complete fresh install of Open Beta 2.7.6. I didn't install any Input Devices, nor TrackIR or anything alike. Only thing running except DCS was Afterburner. I then set the grapics preset in DCS to high. Wake turbulence is off, fullscreen is enabled, v-sync disabled.

I used my usual two benchmark scenes as trk-file. One scene is a 140 second flight in a TF-51 low over Marianas with clouds and water, the other one is a low 150 sec. flight in a F-16 low over syria with clouds and water. Both Tracks are attached below.

The results are... interesting:

Baseline (2.7.6, Preset High, Average of three consecutive runs)

Marianas:
06-11-2021, 11:13:39 DCS.exe benchmark completed, 7268 frames rendered in 147.890 s (Average of 3 times run TF-51/Marianas, Preset High, 1080p in 2.7.6)
                     Average framerate  :   49.1 FPS
                     Minimum framerate  :   40.9 FPS
                     Maximum framerate  :   56.3 FPS
                     1% low framerate   :   41.9 FPS

Syria:
06-11-2021, 11:23:06 DCS.exe benchmark completed, 12201 frames rendered in 139.765 s (Average of 3 times run F-16/Syria, Preset High, 1080p in 2.7.6)
                     Average framerate  :   87.3 FPS
                     Minimum framerate  :   71.9 FPS
                     Maximum framerate  :  105.6 FPS
                     1% low framerate   :   72.0 FPS

Then I updated to the latest 2.7.7 Open Beta, deleted the Saved Games folder and re-run the same tests:

Marianas:
06-11-2021, 13:43:56 DCS.exe benchmark completed, 7822 frames rendered in 147.953 s (2.7.7 Average 3x Marianas)
                     Average framerate  :   52.8 FPS +7,5%
                     Minimum framerate  :   44.7 FPS
                     Maximum framerate  :   63.4 FPS
                     1% low framerate   :   44.8 FPS

Syria:
06-11-2021, 13:34:28 DCS.exe benchmark completed, 10965 frames rendered in 139.156 s (2.7.7 Average 3x Syria)
                     Average framerate  :   78.7 FPS -10%
                     Minimum framerate  :   66.2 FPS
                     Maximum framerate  :   90.2 FPS
                     1% low framerate   :   66.5 FPS

Sooo, the result is a mixed bag obviously. While I lost 10% fps in the Syria-Benchmark, I gained(!) a considerable 7,5% in the Marianas. Still the Marianas are more demanding than Syria, but that's not new to 2.7.7.

Edit: So, other than with my current maschine, where I had no change in fps whatsoever, with this less performant system I had change in fps between 2.7.6 and 2.7.7 - not as expected though...

and that is exactly my experience and what i have reported

the more your system is being pushed, the less the degradation is visible. Until you reach a point where already existing bottlenecks are taking over.

im pretty sure if you do your tests on caucasus and without msaa/lower res the loss will be even higher

Which, in return, would again hint towards the problem laying within the cpu performance more than within the gpu performance…

Doesn’t explain the gain in performance for marianas though.

well, marianas is pretty new and basically a work in progress, cant exclude some optimization introduced in 2.7

Quote

DCS: Marianas by Eagle Dynamics

  • Added nine new islands that extend 600 km north of Saipan. Anatahan, Sarigan, Guguan, Alamagan, Pagan, Agrihan, Asuncion, Maug, and Farallon de Pajaros.
  • Added a new, non-paved airfield on Pagan island.
  • Improved seabed elevation map.
  • Added breaking waves.
  • New unique buildings:
    • Fiesta Resort & Spa.
    • Paradise hotel Saipan.
  • Improvements to non-realistic curves of roads and terrains.
  • Andersen AFB - If a single runway is blocked, aircraft will not use an open runway - fixed

other maps werent touched, so the performance loss is consistent and reproducible

so I just tested 3 scenarios with system resolution options-> VR settings using my standard track file

performance track 276.trk

    FPS
1 System resolution unchecked 78
2 System resolution checked 80
3 System resolution unchecked but window maximised (ALT+ENTER) 82

it's a small difference , but, can anyone else verify?
