DCS World 2.0 and New Maps Discussion Thread

That is exactly what WON'T work!

Because all objects and their collision (LoS is a "collision detection for rays between points) need to be handled in the same thread. If not synced planes will pass through other planes or bullets etc. Now you have the same amount of calculations and simply added sync issues that need to be managed and consume additional computing power / time, resulting in even less frames per second... ;-)

It has been discussed over and over again. If there is an easy way to make the engine multi threaded and take advantage of multiple cores, I have the greatest trust in ED's professional developers to be capable of doing it, wouldn't you agree? :D

That's the only way it could work. ;)

The main thread provides the synced data to all interested computing threads. For LOS calculations you would need static data that doesn't change (and doesn't need to be synced) as objects static attributes (size, mass, etc...), general visibility, range of detection, map data. And dynamic data (that needs to be synced) like objects position with their point of view, sensor range and location.

The AI thread could then access the LOS threads synced data to determine the next action to take. It doesn't matter if the AI uses the old LOS data or the new, if the sim clock ticks fast enough.

Easy, surely not - but possible.

But, alas it takes time and money to implement and that's the reason we will not see it soon, if anytime.

Windows 10 64bit, Intel i9-9900@5Ghz, 32 Gig RAM, MSI RTX 3080 TI, 2 TB SSD, 43" 2160p@1440p monitor.

When it comes to photorealism of 3D aircrafts ED has at least matched (a?) movie quality. It's all great to look at. The normal maps really add a lot to the overall effect.

If it continues like this I'll end up installing DCS on my office PC, cutting visibility to 2000 m just to be able to fly around, using a $15 crapstick :)

I'm hoping there is an improvement to the gun smoke effects, I know ED is well aware of the performance issue with it so I'm sure they've had it redone. The Sabre will suffer the most if it hasn't.

Would also be great to finally see pic related

I'm hoping there's going to be wing flexing when performing high g's and wing condensation too, I really want that to be added in.

Wing flexing is already in DCS. Do a search for it and you'll find a screenshot of some of the FC3 aircraft showing it off.

Edit:

Here, have a video from PeterP showing it off:

everytime someone posts about DCS needing some obscure effect that's already in the game, it just shows how pointless they are in the end, cool nonetheless

Is Edge engine going to use DX 11 Tessellation features to improve graphics and performance?

IIRC it hasn't been disclosed whether tesselation is a feature set of EDGE or not.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Apart from its use for cockpits, I like to imagine that you could create some very beautiful and detailed deformations on vehicles and aircraft where they also include torn panels, bent metal sheets, aircraft internals etc., similar to what was recently described by LN/Cobra as their approach to damge modelling on the MiG-21 - but overall the models themselves already have an extremely detailed geometry and texture mapping, so I don´t know if tesselation would offer any real benfits.

To use Tess. on Airframes, the models would need to be adjusted for it I'd Assume...

however, on the terrain, Tessellation can be used on pretty much everything if the map is built from scratch to use it... Rocks, Mountains, Cliffs, ground, etc etc etc.

The big feature of new EDGE Maps is Clip Mapping.

Can you elaborate more about clip mapping? And its use in Edge plz.

I'll have to search for the video examples posted before (they might be buried here).

Basically.

The new maps have Multiple LODs,

The Highest LOD is around the Players Aircraft (And/Or Camera in use).

The terrains LOD degrades in steps as distance from the Aircraft/Cameras increases.

Thx Skate,

sounds to me like the result might be similar in quality to the terrain that SpaceEngine generates procedurally for a planet´s surface, only with more diverse textures and props.

BTW, a very nice program.

Hope I don't get slated for this, but does anyone have any idea what month we will see Edge? I'm just so looking forward it now I have purchased the Sabre. With the Sabre cockpit looking so real, I just cannot wait to look out of the cockpit and see the Edge map. This wait is just slow torture, especially after seeing the Mig-21 using Edge.

So can anyone narrow it down to the nearest month yet?

Wags mentioned "later in 2014" ("later" as in "in 2014, after 1.2.9" - not necessarily "late in 2014").

So our best guess would be August, September, October, November or December.

Well I can't lie and say I didn't expect those answers. I just thought that if I showed a scary amount of enthusiasm that someone might break and give me the answer to the golden question lol.

Message me if you have any info and I promise I'll keep it to myself.
