DCS World 2.0 and New Maps Discussion Thread

Hope you are right, maybe the lighting isn't enabled or something like that - I just want the terrain to be as good as the amazing aircraft :)

I also think the lighting is not ready yet. The colors can be adjusted.... maybe even the LODs on trees... But it is nice to know we can hope for high detailed unique ground objects.

Thank you Matt for this great info!

The landscape looks great, those hills seem to be much smoother than before. Only one rant though, I hope that lighting / shading will be improved, as SkateZilla suggests. Right now, those textures look way too cartoony.

Other than that, I have nothing else to complain about. Let's hope it will not only look good, but, most importantly, will also bring much needed performance improvement to DCS!

Aaaaaand that was probably the last WIP images we are going to see of Nevada.

This looks much better than the Nevada pics. Either this map is farther along, or the graphics settings were better (or postprocessing happened).

Yup, just silly the responses people give.

On that note this thread is about DCS World and EDGE, there is no place for comparing to other games, just as a reminder to all.

Ever heard the saying, "Its like comparing apples to oranges"?

This is an Apple:

This is an Orange:

Why would we compare these?

Why would we compare these?

General consensus has always been that 'viewpoint distance' is the exclusionary factor that negates said comparisons. Now as mentioned above, the CryEngine from CryTech can cater for viewpoint distance needed for a SIM such as DCS, ergo the comparison suddenly becomes valid.

Now we are comparing a Granny Smith apple (EDGE) to a Golden Delicious apple (CryEngine) and unless there is evidence that disproves the allegation that the CryEngine can indeed cater for the viewing distance needed by DCS then the comparison suddenly becomes valid. Is there?

Perhaps we should start a thread "EDGE vs X" although all our experiences with EDGE would negate a decent comparison with anything, after all who here has spent any quality time with EDGE so far? ;)

The thread is for EDGE/Nevada news and info not my graphic engine is bigger than yours. :D

Agreed - a confrontational comparison is never a good thing and neither the intent behind the submission. Rather, a honest comparison highlighting the reasons why, where, why not and how is always a good thing: Rather us enlightened than being mushrooms.

Then again, said comparison will obviously have to wait until the Granny Smith is ripe for the picking lest we are stuck with a sour apple :P

uhhhuhhuuu, cool :cheer3nc:

i guess many of us thought we see parts of (new) georgian map on those new EDGE screenshots

so here comes france - or the mediterranean ? with part of italy too ?

very nice

with old WWII era buildings or with modern structures ? :bounce:

but maybe we see a french aircraft carrier in the Golfe de Calvi and not a russian ship (too far on that screenie)

Thanks for the nice screen shots.

Aaaaaand that was probably the last WIP images we are going to see of Nevada.

How come? Would the unrealistic replies/illogical comparison shots that some people are giving offend ED or some thing? Why couldn't they just ignore these posts? I really hope that is not the case. :dunno:

Ed knows that what they are showing is WIP....so..?

Anyway, thanks for the screen shots Wags. Looking forward to this one for a long time!

We have little to no idea of the capabilities of EDGE right now other than vague suggestions of what might be, so dosnt really do us much good to guesstimate what might be. That's not to mention that not to many of these other Engines are doing what DCS does either, so there are no level play field examples to compare to...

SO we have no basis of comparison just like we have no basis to judge the final release...

Now I am hungry for an apple for some reason though... :D

I for one think that the screenshots are really great! The things ED wanted to show us was the level of detail of the airfields and urban area and you can't disagree on that - it is really impressive for a modern day flight simulator.

The visualization is another thing - things doesn't really look good from that side, but again Wags stated before that ED team is working on a new rendering engine. Let's hope we'll see in near future more realistic lightning and sky scape. Right now DCS World feel and looks like some surrealistic plastic enviroment.

There is a small detail that people are ignoring. Ajaccio theater photo shows the coast line and the sea is more detailed than one might expect at first, but even detailed what we have in DCS: World. As you can see, the waves create accidents foam against the shore, and you can see under water texture, not sure if it is an effect of depth or has been placed just so. Maybe a shy step to realistic naval and submarine environment in DCS: World?

There is one: CryEngine from CryTek.

SO we have no basis of comparison......

Not now, yes. When EDGE is released we however will have a basis for comparison and it is indeed my hope that when such time arrives that we can compare and seek answers in a constructive, meaningful manner rather than hiding behind respective boulders throwing clay at the opposing faction, calling oranges apples and apples oranges :D

For a space sim?!? With nothing but empty space and ships (and probably a skybox) to render?

There is no way of telling (for me at least) to what scale those maps actually achieve acceptable performance. Arma 3 looks pretty too, but is years if not decades away from Georgia sized maps and DCS drawing distances.

a) There is still a lot of question marks whether there is any viability to the comparison.

b) Furthermore (not directed at you, Viper), why would anybody ask for replacement of the engine while a new in house engine is close to completion? Even if the in house product turned out to be sub-standard (we aren't in a place to judge ATM, just hypothetically), they most likely won't have the money lying around to license the engine of a big player like Crytek after years of funding in house development.

c) All this does not belong in this thread, this thread is about Nevada.

It's been post processed - noticed the vignetting on the edges? It's a typical trick for photographer to create a moody picture.... I don't think this map is further alone, it's a high altitude shot and distinctly lack of light so we don't see much details....

No, definitely not a Space SIM. RealTime Immersive.

We did have some pretty water in one of the earlier DCSW Versions. 1.2.2 I think it was?

Even as WIPs, you can only make the Flat Desert look so Appealing compared to a Green coast line.

You can't really compare ground level shoots to way up level shoots. I personally think that even even the Georgia map looks great from 1000 m.
